Chapter Text
He wakes up, with no recollection as to how he got here or who he is. His sleeves are torn. A muddied blue and white. The place is empty. The floor is cold. There are shards that reveal his reflection. A messy blonde-orange head. Broken things, scattered in this void. They float. They don't make noise.
A robotic voice calls out.
"...Hello?"
The voice made noise, so he does too. "Hello."
He wants to look for the direction of the noise. He feels dizzy. He doesn't want to move. So he doesn't. He slouches, hands in front of him. He stares at them. They're pale.
"Hello?" The robotic voice calls out again.
He thinks he should respond again. He wonders why he thinks that. He responds to his thinking.
"Hello." This time, he feels that he can look up. So he does.
From a large pyramid bump in the large, blank tiles on the ground, is a figure with a thin frame and grayed out hair with blue tints at the ends. A red little bow on the front of their dress. They're missing a sock.
He thinks this persons (robots?) inflection at the start was interesting. He feels like it fits what he's about to say next. But he doesn't like the feel of it, so he states his next words. "Who are you."
He is uncertain. He doesn't like uncertainty. Even if he didn't say it like he is uncertain, he knows the words are. In this case, it's kind of bearable. He doesn't know the difference.
"...Miku."
And he recognizes her name. She tilts her head to the side and her long twin tails follow suit. "...Hatsune Miku. Yes. I know you." He states. That doesn't sound quite right. "...I've heard of you." He corrects himself. He doesn't know her. He doesn't know anything. He doesn't know if he is safe. He wonders why.
"I see." She nods. "What's your name?"
His name?
".
..
..."
He doesn't know. But a name is important. Of course it's important. It's important to him. He still doesn't know.
"I don't know."
The person-- robot-- Miku, looks a little startled. "That's okay."
He thinks he should respond, but he doesn't want to. So he doesn't. It's quiet.
"I've never seen you before. I wonder why you're here." She speaks up again.
"Me too." He looks at her expression. She looks expectant. He supposes he should elaborate. "I just woke up here. I don't remember anything else." He wants to ask something. So he adds on. "Are you a robot."
Miku is quiet for a moment, contemplating the question. "You can treat me as whatever you want."
He doesn't know why, but he doesn't think she looks like a robot. "Person. You're a Miku person." He says. He doesn't think his words are very coherent, but Miku nods anyway. Like she understands what he means.
"As you wish." She sits down on the floor next to him. Her long dress is tucked under her knees. "You don't remember anything?"
He shakes his head.
"Sometimes, others like me will show up. We're here to help our people find their true feelings. But I don't recognize you."
You aren't one of us.
The thought disappears. He forgets about it.
"Oh. Sorry." He says.
Miku shakes her head. "No, I mean, I'm happy you're here. You're new. Which means we can help you. Maybe you need to find your memories, or true feelings, too." She smiles. She's happy he's here. She seems genuine. He doesn't know what wouldn't be genuine. He doesn't know what she means by 'too'. "Maybe you can learn about yourself, and you can meet the others."
He doesn't know why, but he likes that idea. Miku makes a small noise of approval. They're like notes or synthesizers. They sound like small chirps. He finds it interesting. He wonders why she made such a noise.
"Do you want to try getting up? There's isn't much here, but there are a few structures." She waits for an answer. He thinks she's pretty patient. He nods. She gets up and holds out her hand. He takes it. It's a cool touch, but it has some warmth too. He wonders how that's possible. He wonders why he thinks it isn't.
Soon, they're both standing. She's short, but it's not like he's all that tall anyway. But he hasn't met anyone else. How would he know that?
"Let's go." She says, and slowly, they make their way to wherever Miku wants. He doesn't know why he trusts her. But the calm feeling here makes him feel at ease. His cheeks begin feeling sore.
Then he realizes it. The reason why she made that noise.
He relaxes his facial muscles.
Miku takes them further through the empty place. He doesn't know what to call it. It feels empty. He thinks it should be weird. But it isn't.
In the distance, he begins to make out a blonde figure. They've short hair, a more solid blonde compared to his own. A headband with large bunny ears droops downwards, looking vintage. A bit like his own sleeves, and what little he saw of his own appearance.
He wonders what bunnies are.
"Rin." Miku says as they draw near. "Look."
The Rin person notices them and turns to face them. Rin looks him up and down, and he feels like he's being analyzed. He isn't entirely comfortable with it. He doesn't protest. He stays perfectly still, concentrating instead on his hand in Miku's.
"Who is this?" Rin asks. "I don't recognize you."
He doesn't say anything. So Miku introduces him.
"He doesn't know. We're going to help him." She looks at him. "This is Kagamine Rin. She's like me. She's really good at singing. She might sing for you, if you'd like!"
"Miku." Rin's cheeks are turning red. "...Miku can sing too."
He nods. He knows that much. They are quiet for a moment. He doesn't want to say anything.
"You don't know your name?" Rin asks.
He shakes his head. It's been a few minutes, but he's yet to recall anything outside of this place. No memories, no name.
"It's okay." Rin says. She must sense his surprise, because she continues. "We don't usually see more people here. But you must be here for a reason."
More people?
"Yes." Miku says, startling him. "There's others that come here."
Ah, so he must've said it out loud. "Who."
"Maybe you can meet them soon." Miku smiles. "I think... they'd be happy to see someone new."
He nods. Meeting new people... How strange. That means that he isn't supposed to be here. At least, he wasn't originally here. But Rin said he must be here for a reason. He doesn't know if he wants to find it soon or not. It will likely depend on the people he'll meet.
He gives Miku's hand a squeeze to let her know she can let go. "Can I sit."
Rin, in response, sits down too. "Of course you can. You're here for as long as we can see, so you can do anything." Rin hesitates. "Don't wander too far though. You might get lost. At least, that's what the others say."
Miku gives Rin a look that she ignores. He doesn't ignore it, but he chooses not to act on it. He nods. He doesn't want to do anything, anyway. And nobody here is forcing him to do anything. It's not like he's been forced to do anything, anyway. He doesn't know where that thought came from. He forgets it.
He chooses to lie here. He said he was going to sit, but he's not doing that anymore. He lies on his side. The floor is cold. He curls inwards. He floor gives a faint reflection. He wants to sleep. So he closes his eyes.
Some time passes. He hasn't really fallen asleep. But he's dozing off. At least, he thinks so. The other two seem to think so because they begin conversing softly. He finds he doesn't mind, and so he doesn't move.
Nothing good comes out of eavesdropping.
"You're actually excited that he's here, aren't you? We haven't met someone in a long time. You seemed like you really cared, just then."
"I don't."
"You do."
He drifts off.
