Missing Scene - The Morning After

Summary:

(Spoilers for She Hulk: Episode 8)

As funny and adorable it was to see Matt perform the Walk of Shame™, I believe that with a gal like Jen Walters, he might've stayed a bit longer.

Everyone benefits. (File this one under: Missing Scene, Pure Fluff, and Matt Murdock Being Himself. :) )

Notes:

I'm definitely feeling the Marvel fatigue, but I just had to tune in to watch Charlie Cox come back as Matty boy. Safe to say, I wasn't disappointed... but I did want more.

If you did too, and you're also a hopeless romantic like me, you've come to the right place. :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Good morning.”

Jen shifted underneath her comforter, trying to ignore the soothing low voice that came from next to her. She knew exactly who it was, and not exactly how it made her feel - yet, at least. If the opportunity came, she’d like to get to know more about it.

Or rather, him.

Her hand ran through her curls, and she slowly forced herself to turn over.

She didn’t regret the effort it took.

He really is like a chiseled Greek statue.

“Mornin’,” she grunted, much less attractively - at least, it seemed that way to herself. The chuckle that came from beside her either confirmed that exact thought or the opposite.

Much less groggy, now starting to wake up and realize how this was actually kind of surprising, she continued, “Matt… You stayed…”

Matt didn’t seem to find it as surprising as her. “Why wouldn’t I have?”

Jen gave an unknowing shrug. “I dunno… figured you would’ve done the walk of shame by now.”

Matt chuckled again. Oh, how she hated it… it made her feel things. New things.

Ew.

“Walk of shame? Miss Walters, who do you take me for?” Matt smirked.

Jen couldn’t help but smile back. She hoped he could sense that. “I dunno… I think I heard you were Catholic at some point, right?” Matt nodded in response. “Mmm… guess I didn’t know whether you’d be a perfect schoolboy or a complete rebel.”

Matt laughed this time. It sounded even nicer. Ugh. “Well, are you satisfied with what you’ve found?”

Jen snuggled up closer to him. He’s nice and warm, and smells like an old warehouse - but there’s a whiff of coffee in there somewhere… if he got up to make a cup, and then came back, she really doesn’t know what to do with him.

He may be too good. Not just for her, but for anybody.

“I am… but I’d like to know more,” she said, tapping his chest with her finger as a silent indicator that she’d like to explore. He didn’t stop her, so she continued downward, and was very pleased, to say the least. “If you’d like to as well.”

Matt smiled. “I think that’s reasonable.”

Jen finished her exploration, and went back up to pull the comforter up a little more. She didn’t have to be in the office today, so there was no rush…

Except for that flight home Matt had to catch. In like, three hours.

And the stupid airport is an hour away, so he should probably get going.

Stupid.

Some part of that must’ve been said aloud, because Matt gently pats her on the chest. The touch is so soft, she’d mistake him for a feather if he was any more gentle.

“I’ll be back at some point,” he assured her. “Hopefully not too long. And if I run into a particularly difficult client… I know who to call. That being said, I would like for all of our calls to not be legal jargon. If you are fine with that too, of course.”

Jen sighed contently. She’d be completely fine with that.

“Yeah… that sounds nice,” she muttered. “Really nice.”

Before Matt can fully get up and go, Jen tugs on his arm. “I really do like you, Matt. Just so you know.”

Matt doesn’t turn around to face her, but she can feel his smile grow. It’s just something in the air of the room that changes whenever this man smiles… “And I really like you, Jen.”

“Hey, I’m serious. You’re one hell of a charmer… pun fully intended. But, with that said, if you wine and dine your preferences back in Hell’s Kitchen, I won’t try and stop you.”

Matt let out a soft chuckle. “I wouldn’t stop you either, Jen. But I think you’ll find me faithful in more ways than one. That’s just me, though - you do you.”

Oh, she’d absolutely do that tonight if this idiot (said as affectionately as possible) decided to invade her thoughts again. It looked more likely by the second.

“Hmm,” Jen hums. “I dunno… maybe I’ve got the hots for Eugene.”

Matt full on laughs at that. “That is a very disturbing thought. You’d break that little guy’s back.”

Jen can’t help herself from joining in with that hideous thought. The worst part is, he’s probably right; concerning both herself and She-Hulk.

When the laughter dies down, and her thoughts aren’t plagued by that abomination, she then looks at you - the reader.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this would end up an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story, if you combine it with my show’s episode this is based on. However, this is just a one shot. Maybe the author will do more fics for us at some point.

Looking back to Matt, Jen smiles. “At least let me drive you to the airport.”

Matt shakes his head. “I couldn’t ask that of you.”

“You’re not asking, I’m offering,” Jen corrects him. “Besides, who would you rather get: a stinky old cab driver, risk Luke not showing up or just not caring enough despite you winning his case, or this tall drink of Mountain Dew?”

“Oh, so that wasn’t water I took a sip of last night?” Matt quipped.

“Hey, I like to think I have a bit of fizz,” Jen fired back with a smile.

She threw her body forward, finally able to look at Matt’s face again as she scooted over to the side of the bed he was on - her slippers were on that side, after all. That’s how she knew last night was fantastic, he got her side of the bed. Lucky bastard.

“Get your ass dressed, Murdock. Regrettably, we can’t take you to the airport naked.”

Matt smirked at her. He searched for her hand, and gently moved their fingers together. “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you, Jen. And… also getting to know you better.”

Jen felt a wave of sadness at the thought of not seeing Matt again for a while… a guy has been able to make her feel things before, but those mostly end with heartbreak and Rosé. This, however, she could see ending in a state that neither of them thought they’d be in, but one where they’re feared as the best defense team west of the Mississippi.

So, of course, the time they have together - right now - has to be the best it can be.

“The feeling’s mutual, Matt,” Jen said softly. “Very, very mutual.”

Her free hand moved toward his face, and he must’ve echo-located that movement, because he met her lips right in the middle.
