Work Text:
Toshinori was used to threats. Whether from petty villains threatening to kill All Might before being smashed by one of his punches or a new employee of Might Tower threatening to make Toshinori’s life miserable if he didn’t grab them a hot coffee in a timely manner, the man was used to threats.
He was especially used to people attempting to blackmail him as All Might’s secretary inorder to take him, aka All Might; the number one hero, down.
Of course, very few knew that the two were one and the same, making it common for people to go after the seemingly quirkless skeleton of a man rather than the most powerful hero in Japan. Obviously, why go straight to the guy who can change the weather with a swing of his fist when you can go after his old, sickly secretary?
That’s why the letter Toshinori found on his desk, addressed to All Might, was all the more concerning. It didn’t help that said vague letter had typed, in simple script,
I know the truth behind your relationship with Yagi Toshinori.
So now Toshinori found himself powered up, wearing a cap, hoodie, and sunglasses for a disguise as he sat on a park picnic bench trying to figure out how his secret got out.
It was while he was contemplating all of his life choices up to that point that a small figure sat across from him, causing him to look up.
Then immediately almost deflate and cough up blood.
See, the person who now sat across from a poorly disguised All Might was a young teenager, hood up in an attempt to hide their wild curls, head tilted slightly down, and green eyes glaring daggers into the older hero’s soul. They must have had some makeup on as the freckles that Toshinori knew were on their cheeks were no longer visible and the hoodie they wore to cover their frame was obviously the same oversized one of their absentee father that their mother couldn’t seem to part with.
“All Might.” Midoriya, Toshinori’s thirteen-year-old upstairs neighbor, spat lowly. “I see you got my letter.”
“Ah, yes.” The man replied, trying to stay at least outwardly calm as his head spun. “I was curious about how you managed to deliver it.”
Not that Toshinori wondered anymore now that he knew it was Midorya who sent him the sparsely detailed and vaguely threatening letter. He had given the teenager a small tour of Might Tower literally the day before. The hero might not know for sure how the kid could have possibly snuck into his office to plant the note, but he had a strong suspicion it had to do with Midoriya going to the bathroom with promises of knowing how to get there alone.
“I have my ways,” Midoriya dismissed. “More importantly you're going to meet my demands if you don’t want anyone to find out about your…relationship with Yagi Toshinori.”
That was one way to put it. His “relationship.” Honestly, Toshinori was a bit surprised that in the two months of living in his new place someone was able to figure out his secret identity. An identity that he has kept hidden for years no less.
It was less surprising when you remembered the detail that Midoriya was the one who figured it out. With his notebooks and muttering habit, Toshinori knew exactly how smart the kid was. If it wasn’t for the quirkless diagnosis he’d think his neighbor had an intelligence quirk.
Honestly this whole exchange would have been impressive, from figuring out about his small form to sneaking a letter into his office, if it wasn’t so disappointing that Midoriya chose to blackmail him.
Was all his rants about how amazing All Might was just a lie? A clever ruse to get on Toshinori’s good side? A trick to learn All Might's secrets that lead to him discovering the biggest one of all?
If the cold hard glare directed at the kid’s supposed idol was anything to go by, he’d say yes.
“Here.” Midoriya snapped curtly as he thrusted a small stack of stapled papers and a pen at him. “Sign this. I expect the terms of this contract to be made effective in the next hour. It shouldn’t take you too long to make it back to Might Tower after all.”
The amount of sass in the normally very polite and socially awkward teen’s voice was not helping the hero in his endeavor for the world to make sense again. So instead of focusing on the child in front of him, he started to read the contract.
The more he read, the more confused he got till finally, All Might looked back up to stare into harsh green eyes.
“Young Mi-man, what exactly do you believe my…relationship with Yagi Toshinori is?”
Midoriya scoffed as he rolled his eyes before pinning the hero with a furious look. “Don’t play dumb, All Might. I know you're overworking Yagi-san. We both know he can’t say no to a request and he’s always trying to go beyond just to help out. It’s obvious that you’ve been taking advantage of that despite it causing his health to decrease!”
And just like that, the pieces clicked into place.
Whenever Toshinori and Midorya were hanging out (which was often) and All Might was called in for something, Toshinori would say that All Might needed him. When it was his day off yet he was still filing paperwork that he put off, he’d say that if All Might wasn’t going to do it, he had to. When he once was caught leaving the apartment late at night by Midoriya returning with medicine for his sick mom, the man answered the questions with a shrugged, “Well All Might never sleeps.”
With this revelation, Toshinori was flooded with relief.
Midorya hadn’t found out.
Midorya wasn’t blackmailing him for personal gain.
Midorya wasn’t a two faced possible spy for All for One’s old allies.
Midorya was just a pure hearted child determined to protect the ones he cared about.
And that short list included Toshinori.
He couldn’t help the laugh of pure relief he let out as everything started to make sense. He ended up clutching his stomach as he doubled over, tears starting to fill his eyes. Midoriya let out an indignant sputter as he tried to maintain some level of control over the conversation, confusion over the sudden shift in tone clear.
“Young Midoriya,” Toshinori addressed brightly once he calmed down. “I promise, I'm not over working Yagi.”
The teen sputtered again before his eyebrows furrowed and he tilted his head slightly. “But…but he never gets a break! Everytime we have hung out he either gets a call to come back to Might Tower to help with something or he has to fill out paperwork that you should have filled out. And he eats cheap food that doesn't help with his deteriorating health. If you don’t call that over being work and under payed then what do you call it?”
The hero winced at that. Yea, he could see where young Midoriya was coming from.
“I promise I'm not overworking him. As my secretary it’s his job to fill out reports and such that I myself can’t get to. He often likes to put it off though since such things aren't necessarily that important and he’ll be paid as long as it’s finished within a certain time frame. Speaking of pay, he is actually fairly well off. Now I can’t share exactly how much but I can say that he is responsible for quite a few charities being able to continue their work. He just prefers a simpler life style. As for the calls, it’s something that was explained to him before he accepted the job. He agreed to the terms, however, as he wanted to prove that someone quirkless was just as qualified as anyone else.”
That last point wasn’t exactly true. The truth was Toshinori needed a cover for why his civilian form was hanging around the agency and in All Might’s office. He added the argument to his reassurance though as a way to help show Midoriya that he didn’t need a quirk to succeed in life. Despite what others have said.
Said teen looked confused for a second as he proceeded the information before turning white as a sheet.
“So…Yagi-san isn’t being forced to do extra work.”
“No he is not.” All Might answered even though it wasn't a question.
“And he’s not just scraping by.”
All Might shook his head.
“And you're not a tyrant of a boss who is using his power of being the number one hero to lord over your quirkless employee.”
Toshinori laughed at that one. “No I don’t believe I am. That wouldn't be very heroic of me now would it?”
The teen shook his head no before finally clutching his hair. “And I just threatened All Might!”
Toshinori couldn’t help but bust into laughter again as Midoriya started to frantically apologize repeatedly.
Maybe it wasn’t so bad to be threatened.
