Work Text:
In 130 AC, so much has happened since the passing of King Viserys I Targaryen. The war over the succession between Princess Rhaenyra and Prince Aegon II has only deepened. The rally of supporters have been divided between the Blacks vs the Greens.
Queen Alicent Hightower has been caught in the middle of the war between her former best friend turned bitter rival, Rhaenyra, and her first born son, Aegon II. After two decades of resentment and hatred towards Rhaenyra, it seemed they were close to putting aside their differences for the sake of their family, as King Viserys's health was failing.
She will never forget that heartfelt yet brief moment between them, as she reached out to hold Rhaenyra's wrist and softly caresses it. So much was left unsaid yet they silently communicated through physical touch and their eyes. Deep down, they missed each other. Just for that moment, they weren't the Princess and the Queen, but Rhaenyra and Alicent.
But then, as all good things, it came to an end. Rhaenyra went back to Dragonstone. And then King Viserys, whose health took a turn for the worse, eventually died in his chambers during the middle of the night.
It's been over six months since his passing, and now the war between the Blacks vs Greens has deepened. Alicent is left conflicted as ever as endgame draws nearer. However, it all changes when she comes upon a disturbing conversation during the night.
Alicent is walking down through the halls of the Red Keep during the late night hour. That's when she hears muffled voices. She stops as she hid behind the corner as her eyebrows furrow in confusion before suspicion sets in.
"Tomorrow night, you will slip poison into Princess Rhaenyra's wine during the feast. But make it clean, so everyone will think she dies of a heart attack", Otto orders a man who looks to be a wine merchant
Alicent is shocked as she holds her breath. Her eyes widen in disbelief and fear, listening to her father's wicked plan.
"The poison should set in after after a couple of minutes. It will be a slow and painful death", the wine merchant explains as Otto listens
"Excellent. When the princess dies of what looks like a heart attack, the suspicion won't be cast on me or or any of the Greens. Then the realm will have no choice to name Aegon II as the rightful heir and soon to be King of the Seven Kingdoms", Otto says in a dark tone before smirking sinisterly
Alicent feels different emotions rising to the surface: shock, disbelief, disgust and rage. Her eyes began to fill with tears but she doesn't cry. She blinks it away as she gathers her strength.
"Your reward", Otto says passing the man a bag of coins
Alicent decided not to hear anymore after that as she discreetly walked away in the other direction where she came from, as she didn't want to been seen.
When she eventually gets back to her chambers, she couldn't sleep as her mind and heart are at war. She knew her father can be devious and ruthless. But this? This is beyond evil. This goes beyond loyalties and war between their Houses, this is treason of the highest level. He is not only plotting Rhaenyra's downfall, he is plotting murder.
Alicent in good conscience would tell Rhaenyra of her father's wicked plot against her, but unfortunately the princess is in Dragonstone and won't arrive till the morrow. The feast will begin in the evening.
With that, Alicent stays up late to plan her best course of action.
************************
The following morning, the Queen is all dressed up and ready. After she meets with a trustworthy ally and the grand maester to discuss her late husband's time before his passing, she has his will and testament officially drawn up.
Long before his passing, King Viserys, officially written and signed a letter stating his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra as his sole heir and that she will succeed him after his death. After two decades of conflict between her and Rhaenyra and blind loyalty to her father, she will finally put a stop to this once and all.
Then she hears a knock on her chambers. She turns to find her sworn shield and loyal supporter, Ser Criston opening the door.
"Your son has come to see you as you've commanded, your Grace", he says formally
"Thank you, Ser. You may wait outside my chambers and stand guard", she says as he nodded
When Aegon steps inside her chambers, Ser Criston closes the door behind him.
"What did you wanted to see me for, mother?", Aegon questions
"I have something of importance to discuss with you. You might want to sit down for this", she advised
"Actually, I prefer to stand. Whatever it is, it must be serious. Just come out with it and speak truthfully, mother", he says firmly yet inwardly feels nervous
Alicent nodded before sighing "It's about the succession. After your father passed, we have been at war with your sister and her loyal supporters. However, something has come to my attention that may change everything. It has changed everything"
"What is it?", he asked
"I can't give you all the details now. You're going to have to trust me on this. For your own protection, as well as your siblings", she says seriously
"Why not? What are you not telling me, mother?", he questioned in part frustration, part worry
"Because it's too risky. But soon, you will find out", she says firmly before lowering her voice
"My son, I have decided to support your sister, Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne", Alicent confessed
Aegon looks shocked as he's at a loss for words. "W-What? But why?", he stuttered out in confusion and shock
"Because it is what your late father have wanted. I am respecting his final wish", she whispers
"I understand", he paused before continuing "But why now? What's changed?"
"Time. Time has changed me. After so many years of fighting against your older sister, Rhaenyra, I've realized what is more important. Love", she whispers
"Love? Are you saying...?", he trailed off in confusion before clarity sets in
"Yes. As you know, Rhaenyra, was my oldest and dearest friend when were we children. But then life happened. Politics, duty and betrayal were the cause of our friendship being severed", Alicent explains
"After I married your father and then you and your siblings were born, the damage was already done", she says with regret yet acceptance
"I can't change the past. But I can end this now. End the war before anymore bloodshed, deception and tragedy", she says with firm conviction
Aegon looks at his mother in disbelief as she stares back at him with concern.
"You may not understand this now, my son, but I'm doing what I've should've done a long time ago. I'm honoring your father's wish. Rhaenyra is the heir to the Iron Throne"
"I'm doing this for your father. I'm doing this for Rhaenyra --", she says before Aegon cuts her off
"Mother, don't! Don't do this. Have you forgotten everything that's happened? What about me? I'm the rightful heir. You can't do this!", he yells angrily
"I haven't forgotten!", she yells back in anger before calming herself down and lowers her tone
"Everything I've ever done was either out of love or duty. It can't be both. For the longest time, I've done my duty." she expressed
"Loyalty to your grandfather, loyalty to our House, loyalty to the realm. It's all I've ever done for as long as I can remember." Alicent says with frustration before her expression turns wistful
"Everything I've ever done is to protect you and your siblings. Nothing has meant more to me", she says honestly
"Until now. You're choosing my sister over me. You're choosing Rhaenyra over your own flesh and blood. Over your House. Over grandfather", Aegon says mournfully
"I'm doing this for you", she whispers with a hint of emotion
"I let my hatred for Rhaenyra and my blind loyalty to your grandfather cloud my judgement. I've turned into what I feared the most"
"Your grandfather may have used me as a pawn in his pursuit for power. But my actions are my own and I have suffered the consequences dearly and so have Rhaenyra because of this war"
Aegon stares back in silence as his mother caresses his cheek with maternal affection, as he sees a side to her she rarely shows, but only to Helaena and Aemond.
"Don't let your hatred and unforgiveness poison you. Don't follow in my footsteps, Aegon. Don't be like me. Don't be like your grandfather", she warned as her eyes glistened with unshed tears
"Be your own person. Be the man I hope you can be. Forge your own path and destiny. I didn't have the courage, nor the choice to do that. But you can"
"Let go of your hatred, my dear son, before it consumes you. Before it's too late", she whispers
Aegon let's his mother's words sink in as he remain silent. She tenderly kisses his forehead, as he feels his eyes tear up a bit. She watches him leave her chambers, as she takes a deep breath and wipe away her tears.
************************
When Princess Rhaenyra arrived at King's Landing with Prince Daemon and their kids, they are soon called into the throne room by the Queen, as everyone else is already there waiting.
While everyone, including Otto Hightower, wonders what Queen Alicent Hightower is called them there for, she speaks up.
"Thank you, everyone for showing up at this notice. As you know, there will be a feast tonight to welcome back Princess Rhaenyra", the Queen speaks formally as she sits on the Iron Throne
"However, it has come to my attention that the line of succession is threatened. And I will not stand for it", Alicent continues
Everyone including Corlys and Rhaenys immediately assumes the Queen means her son, Aegon's claim to the throne is threatened by Rhaenyra. Otto smirks evilly. He wasn't expecting his daughter to have something up her sleeve but it seems she's playing the game. She's finally planning Rhaenyra's downfall, or so he thought.
Rhaenyra is upset as she confronts Alicent.
"What is the real reason you called everyone here? Are you seriously questioning my claim to the Iron Throne again? Are you really going against my late father's wishes?!", Rhaenyra yells angrily
Alicent swallows thickly but maintains her composure. She must follow through with her plan through the end.
"I have my reasons for this calling everyone here. It has come to my attention that there is a traitor amongst us", the Queen explains as everyone is stunned silent
Daemon looks at everyone before stopping at Otto who looks smug. The Prince is seething as he turns to look at Queen Alicent.
"As I've said, the line of succession is threatened. I will do anything necessary to protect my children", Alicent speaks in a serious tone
"And who is the traitor amongst us, your Grace?", Rhaenys questions
Before Alicent could answer, Daemon speaks up.
"Oh, isn't it obvious? The Queen is threatened by Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne. She has been set on destroying her and using her precious son as a pawn in her vendetta against my wife", he replied angrily
Alicent stares back Daemon darkly yet inwardly composed herself. She stays silent as he rants and raves.
"Tell me, was this your plan all along from the beginning? You were just buying your time and waiting for the right moment to strike like the viper you are", Daemon says trying to get the Queen to lose her composure
"Daemon, stop it", Rhaenyra says pleading with him as she grabs his arm but he doesn't listen
"You slithered your way like a snake in the garden, tricking everyone including my wife with your false kindness early on", he says in a disgusting tone
"Watch your filthy mouth!", Aegon yelled angrily while Aemond seethes in silent rage as he keeps his hand on his sword pommel ready to strike
"Daemon, that's enough!", Rhaenyra yells
"Careful, if a person stands close enough to it, they'll get bit when they least expect it. You poison everything you touch", Daemon says in an icy tone
Ser Criston and Aemond took their swords out as they point it at Daemon, who stands there silently challenging them. Otto looks on with a smug as he looks pleased, watching his longtime enemy make a fool of himself.
"Lower your swords now", the Queen commands firmly
Ser Criston immediately lowers his sword while Aemond is reluctant.
"Lower your sword now, Aemond", Alicent says to her son as he eventually does as he is told
Alicent stares at Daemon as if looks could kill.
"I could have your head on a spike but I'm not going to. For Rhaenyra's sake", she says
"Aww, I'm touched by your compassion. Spare me. If you want to kill me, get on with it", Daemon says provoking
"Princess Rhaenyra, does your uncle speaks just to hear himself or has he always been foolish?", Alicent questions looking truly done with his clownery
"Sadly both, your Grace", Rhaenyra answers as Daemon looks offended
"I have listened to your endless ranting and vile judgement against me. This coming from the man who has committed unspeakable crimes" the Queen says boldly
Daemon shook his head but doesn't say anything to challenge her claims, as he knows it's true.
"You have no room to pass judgement on me or casting stones. And you have wasted enough of my time. Are we done here?", she says seriously and doesn't wait for his response
"Good. Now moving on to more serious and important matters. I have gathered everyone here to discuss the matter of succession and the charges that I will issue", the Queen states firmly
"You mean treason", Rhaenyra speaks up this time
"Yes. That's one of them", Alicent answers staring at Rhaenyra
"What are the other charges?", Rhaenyra questioned nervously as she has a feeling what it is
However, instead of answering, Alicent turns her head and stares at her father who looks confused for a moment before reality sets in. Everyone else turns in his direction, including Rhaenyra who looks shocked. She turns back to look at Alicent.
"Wait a second...are you saying -?", Rhaenyra questioned before Alicent cuts in immediately
"Yes. The traitor amongst us is my father", Alicent answers staring at him with a look of disgust and anger
Otto looks stunned before speaking "I have no idea what you're taking about your Grace. You've got the wrong person"
"Really? Is that how you want to play it? How about I refresh your memory? Last night you conspired with a wine merchant to poison Princess Rhaenyra at tonight's feast", Alicent declared as everyone looks shocked
"I believe your words were...'slip the poison into her wine and make it look like she dies of a heart attack'. Does that ring a bell?"
Otto stares at his daughter in disbelief and anger as he realized she overheard his late night conversation.
"You have no proof to back up this false accusation. It's your word against mine", Otto says
"Yes, but her words are very detailed for it to be false. And I've never known Alicent to be a liar. She's capable of many things, some even questionable, but lying isn't one of them", Rhaenyra says seriously standing up for Alicent
"But you...you are very capable of treachery, deception and cruelty", Rhaenyra says angrily as she is tempted to feed him to Syrax
"You have used Alicent as a pawn for your selfish, ruthless political agenda. Now, you plot to take me out in the hopes of putting your grandson on the Iron Throne", the princess continues her verbal assault on Otto who simply smirks
"You can come at me all you want. But I'll be damned if I let you harm my children or anyone else I love! I'll burn the Seven Kingdoms down before I ever let that happen!", she roared in burning rage fiercely like a dragon as Syrax roars outside in response sensing her fiery anger
Otto starts to get nervous, as he realizes he's backed into a corner, while everyone turns against him. The Queen stands up from the throne.
"Long before King Viserys died, he named Princess Rhaenyra as his sole heir. He wrote a letter and signed it stating that she will succeed him after he dies", the Queen states
Everyone is stunned that Queen Alicent has not only turned against her father, who is the Hand, but is also backing Princess Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra stares at Alicent with wide eyes that held surprise.
"I intend to honor his wish", Alicent says before turning to look at Rhaenyra
"Rhaenyra is the rightful heir and should be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms", Alicent declared at last
Rhaenyra is stunned speechless as she looks at Alicent. She smiles softly with unshed tears as Alicent gazes back with a tender look of her own. Their children who have been at odds for years began to see things in a new light. Helaena, however, foresaw all of this and knew it is a long time coming. That her mother would put an end to the war between the Blacks and Greens.
"So, that's what mother meant?", Aegon thought
"This is absurd!", Otto yells furiously as Alicent turns back to look at him
"This is a mockery of a trial. Is this what you had in mind, daughter? Making false accusations against me and telling lies", he says angrily while trying to save face
"I'm not! You have committed treason and attempted to murder Princess Rhaenyra. In the eyes of the Seven, you have committed a grave sin and will be judged", Alicent says standing up to her father
Otto looks at his daughter with disbelief and rage.
"You betrayed me. Your own father. You brought shame to our House! For her?!", he yelled furiously at Alicent while pointing at Rhaenyra who looks stunned
"Do you have any idea what you've done?!?", he shouted in the throne room as Ser Criston takes his sword out ready to protect his Queen
Alicent looks at him and held her hand up, as he puts his sword away. She faces her father head on.
"Yes. I know exactly what I've done. What I should've done a long time ago", she answers with acceptance yet inner strength
"You deceitful, lying traitor. You are a disgrace to the family name. To our House", Otto says coldly sticking it where it hurts as Alicent visibly flinched but maintain a steely expression
Rhaenyra balls her fists up, fuming in rage as Otto tears his daughter down.
"You are a weak, foolish --", Otto says to his daughter but didn't get a chance to finish
Everyone gasped as Otto lays on the ground with a busted lip, bleeding from the mouth, as he holds his jaw. Rhaenyra stands over him, with her fist balled up, having punched him. Alicent looks stunned seeing Rhaenyra came to her defense, yet her heart swelled, as she is reminded of their youth when she used to fiercely defend her honor.
Ser Criston grabs Otto roughly to his feet as he strong armed him.
"How could you?", Otto questioned in a low, dangerous tone staring up at his daughter
"Why not? I learned from you", Alicent says holding her head up high
At this, he looks stunned before smirking. He lowered his gaze as he realizes his daughter is no longer a pawn but risen to be a powerful player in the game.
"Otto Hightower, you stand in the presence of your Queen. You are being charged with treason and attempted murder. The punishment is execution. Do you have any last words?", Queen Alicent spoke
Otto holds his chin up while Ser Criston still has his grip on him.
"Well done, my daughter. I've taught you well. You're no longer a pawn", he smirked evilly as she stares back intensely
"You're more your father's daughter than you realize. A true Hightower", he says
"I'm nothing like you. I will never be like you", Alicent swore fiercely
Otto's wicked grin fades as his expression darkens "When you stand and watch me die, just remember whose responsible. No one will remember you as the Queen, least of all as the Lady Hightower..."
Alicent swallowed thickly as she does her best to not let her father's words get to her.
"People will remember you as a kinslayer", Otto finished his speech hoping to stick it where it hurts
"What will you have me do with him, your Grace?", Ser Criston questions
Alicent turns to look at Rhaenyra, who silently nods in encouragement.
"I think it should be Princess Rhaenyra to decide his fate. It's only fitting", the Queen says looking at Rhaenyra
"With pleasure", Rhaenyra smirks as Otto stares her down
Rhaenyra turns to look at Daemon, who smirks as well. She nods to him as he takes his sword out.
"I've waited a long time for this", Daemon says ready to cut him down until Rhaenyra holds her hand up
"On second thought...", Rhaenyra says toying with Otto who appeared calm but inwardly shaking as he begins to sweat
"I have a more fitting death in mind for him", the princess says as Daemon smirks knowing what's in store
Otto knows he's truly done for as he closes his eyes.
As everyone steps outside while Ser Criston drags Otto as the former Hand falls to his knees, he is met with a furious and dangerous, Syrax, who stares down at him. Otto is shaking visibly as he then looks his daughter, who stares back at him.
Rhaenyra stands next to Alicent, while everyone else stands behind them on the cliff. The princess turns to look at her queen, silently asking for her permission. Alicent turns to look at her, finding strength in Rhaenyra's violet eyes, before nodding. Rhaenyra holds Alicent's hand and laced their fingers together.
"Dracarys!", Rhaenyra commanded Syrax
Otto doesn't have time to react as Syrax sets him on fire. He screams in agony, as his body is ignited in flames, before Syrax sinks her teeth in him and rip him in half before devouring him.
Alicent watched her father die before her eyes, as a silent tear rolls down her cheek. Rhaenyra sees it and softly caresses her hand out of comfort. Alicent doesn't mourn for her father but mourns her innocence and her youth.
**************************
Later that night, Alicent is standing outside at the Godswood, deep in thought. Rhaenyra comes outside and finds her, staring at her from afar. Her eyes look distant for a moment, reflecting on their past. She then walks over to Alicent, who senses her presence as she turns to look at her.
Rhaenyra stood by her side as they gaze up at the starry night sky. Both are lost in thought while remaining silent. Eventually, Rhaenyra broke the silence.
"Thank you. For what you did back there", Rhaenyra whispers as Alicent turns to look up at her
"You don't have to thank me", Alicent whispers back
"I do. You stood up for me, turned on your father and backed my claim as heir. You spoke the truth today. That took courage", Rhaenyra says with conviction
Alicent smiles softly before it faded as she lowered her gaze.
"To be honest I don't feel as brave as you claim. I didn't have the courage to stand up to my father twenty years ago. I should have. But I was foolish and blinded by loyalty to him --"
"No, don't do that", Rhaenyra says grabbing her hands in hers as she holds her gaze
"Don't ever blame yourself. You were only a child back then. A girl of ten and four. Your father manipulated and used you as a pawn for his own political ambition", Rhaenyra says seriously as Alicent's eyes glisten with unshed tears
"I was too stubborn and blinded by my own feelings of anger and hurt to see your inner turmoil", Rhaenyra confessed
"Yes, but you had every right to feel angry and hurt. Your feelings are valid", Alicent
"Right. And so are yours, Alicent. You had every right to your feelings. Anger, hurt, sorrow, fear. Your feelings are valid", Rhaenyra says firmly before her expression softens
"Your father was wrong. Showing emotional vulnerability and having compassion doesn't make you weak. It makes you human", the silver-haired beauty continues in a soft tone
"You are nothing like your father. You're kind, brave and strong. You have proven to be a good yet powerful queen, even though I don't always agree with you on certain things", Rhaenyra lightly joked on the last part yet spoke honestly
They share a laugh as Alicent nodded in agreement "It goes both ways. You've driven me mad over the years. Yet you challenge me in ways no one else has", she says the last part seriously with a soft smile
"We both have made our share of mistakes over the last twenty years. We both done things we regret and have hurt each other deeply", Rhaenyra whispers
"And I don't want to look back in regret anymore. We were very close once", Rhaenyra smiles wistfully as Alicent stares back with emotion in her eyes
"And I want us to start fresh. If you want that", the princess whispers in a hopeful tone
"I do. More than anything", Alicent whispers before smiling with a hint of tears
Rhaenyra smiles fondly at Alicent as she lace their fingers together while holding one of her hands. They started down at it, before staring into each other's eyes again. They share a smile before going back to gaze at the starry night sky once more.
***************************
*Six Months Later*
Rhaenyra Targaryen is now officially the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Over the last six months, she began making changes and bring order to the realm. She legalized gay marriage, making it possible for same sex couples to be united.
She named Lord Corlys Velaryon as her Hand, who was surprised yet deeply honored and accepted. He and his wife, Princess Rhaenys, have maintained a united front politically and personally. She is a part of the Queen's council, as Rhaenyra trusted her advice as well as her Hand.
Rhaenyra and Daemon have separated but maintain a good relationship as co-parents to their sons. Daemon moved back to Dragonstone with his daughters and has since reunited with Mysaria. They are currently raising their son, who is now a young man. Both Rhaenyra and Daemon have come to a mutual understanding.
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra and Alicent have slowly began rebuilding their relationship. After reconciling, they have slowly made amends platonically while working on rebuilding their trust in one another.
Currently, Rhaenyra is talking to her sons, Jace and Luke.
"I know that things have been complicated over the years between our families. And I know you both don't get along with Aegon and Aemond, considering everything that's happened", Rhaenyra says in a gentle tone
"But their mother and I are working on bringing peace into this family. We have suffered enough heartache and bloodshed to last a lifetime", she says honestly
"I get it. I mean Luke and I won't forget everything that's happened but...if this is what you want...then I'm willing to put aside my differences with Aegon and Aemond for your sake", Jace says sincerely
Rhaenyra smiles softly before turning to Luke.
"And you? I won't force you to do anything you're not ready for. I would understand", she says in motherly affection and concern
"I don't know to be honest. I think I need time", Luke says honestly as Rhaenyra nodded
"Of course", she whispers
"But eventually I'll get there. More than anything, I just want you to be happy, mother", Luke says in a genuine tone
Rhaenyra smiles with unshed tears before hugging him and Jace, as they return it.
"You and your siblings bring me more joy than anything else. Your happiness is my own", Rhaenyra whispers before kissing them both on the head
Meanwhile, Alicent is with her grown children as well, hoping they will eventually come around to the idea of making peace with Jace and Luke. Well, she knows Helaena won't be a problem. But Aegon and Aemond on the other hand is a different matter entirely.
"I want to talk with you about something. I'm not expecting either of you to be okay with it...", Alicent says but looks at Aemond in particular
"But I hope you will come to understand eventually in your own time", she says as she observed her children
Helaena already knows what her mother wants to talk about while Aegon has an idea what it is but doesn't want to assume. Aemond has a neutral reaction as his expression is unreadable.
"What is it, mother?", Aegon questions
"Your older sister and I are working on making amends and hoping to bring peace to our family", Alicent answers
Aegon and Aemond don't look pleased while Helaena looks at her mother sympathetically, wanting to support her.
"After everything that's everything, I would understand if you're not okay with this --", Alicent says before getting cut off by Aemond who angrily stands up knocking down his chair
"I'm not. How can you be okay with this? Have you forgotten Luke took out my eye?!", he yells furiously
"No! Of course, I haven't", Alicent says in a tone of anger, hurt and sorrow
"Then why are you doing this?", Aemond questions in disbelief
Alicent doesn't answer as her eyes tear up. Aegon sees the look in her eyes and remembers his conversation with her six months ago on the day she revealed to him that she decided to support Rhaenyra's claim. Everything she said and her actions in the throne room during his grandfather's trial spoke volumes.
"Love", Aegon thought recalling what she said months ago
Although his mother never said it out right but spoke of her past friendship with his older sister in regret yet fondness, he had a feeling there was more to it than that. The way his mother stood up to his grandfather and how furious he was that she chose Rhaenyra over him and their House. Now, he's absolutely sure.
"She's in love with Rhaenyra", Aegon thought in surprise yet clarity
Helaena looks at her mother and has long suspected of her mother's love and affection for Rhaenyra, even when she hated her over the years. She remembers having a dream of her mother and her older sister during a simpler time in their lives. Her mother never looked more happy. Happier than she's ever been with her father in all the years she's known him, before he died.
"Aemond...", Alicent trails off caressing his cheek
"I'm doing this for you. I don't want you to end up like me. Consumed with hatred and bitterness", she confessed with tears in her eyes
Aegon feels guilt seeing her struggling as he remembers she gave him similar advice six months ago.
"Please...try to understand", Alicent pleaded with him
For a moment, Aemond shows emotion in his right eye, which isn't scarred as his other one is covered in an eye patch. His good eye glistened with unshed tears but he doesn't cry. He quickly composed himself before speaking.
"I'm sorry, mother. I-I can't", his voice cracked with emotion as he pulls away from his mother's touch
This wounds her as he's never turned away from her motherly affection, especially when he was younger. He would always welcome her hugs. Even when he first lost his eye, he sought her embrace as he comforted her while she consoled him in return.
"A-Aemond...", she whispers in deep sorrow as she tries to reach out to him
Aemond swallows back his guilt, hating to see his mother hurting, before quickly leaving her chambers.
Alicent sheds a single tear as Aegon turns to her.
"I'll talk to him", Aegon says as she nodded
Aegon surprised his mother by hugging her before pulling away. He smiles briefly in encouragement before quickly walking out. Alicent is left alone with her daughter, who turns to her with a look of empathy and concern.
Alicent has tears in her eyes as Helaena silently hugs her out of comfort. Alicent returns it holding her daughter, as tears fell.
"It's going to be okay, mother. Don't cry", Helaena whispers encouragingly consoling her
Alicent smiles tearfully as she pulls away. She caresses her daughter's face, reminded more everyday that she's a reflection of Rhaenyra, when she was younger.
"My sweet, precious Helaena", she whispers affectionately
"I'm so sorry", Alicent apologizes
"For all of it. For the war between our families. For how your brothers turned out. For the years I've wasted hating your older sister", she says the last part with deep regret as more tears fell
"Don't be. Do not mourn over the past. Forgive yourself as my sister has", Helaena says insightfully
"Love is the death of duty. You have fulfilled your duty. Now, you can love", Helaena continues wisely
Alicent stares back at her with wide, teary eyes, wondering how her daughter could possibly know.
"I know, mother. You love her", the blonde girl smiles softly in understanding
Alicent smiles tearfully before nodding. She sees the look of understanding, acceptance and sincerity in he daughter's eyes, as she is moved by it. She takes her daughter in her arms and hugs her.
"Thank you", Alicent whispers
Helaena simply smiled and returned the affectionate, heartwarming hug.
*************************
Later that night, Alicent walks to Rhaenyra's chambers, as her heart races. The guard stands by her door.
"I'm here to speak with the Queen", she says as he nodded
He opens the door as Rhaenyra turns to look at him before her eyes widen in surprise seeing Alicent.
"The Lady Alicent is hear to see you, your Grace"
"Thank you, Ser. You can leave us now", Rhaenyra says as he nodded
After he closes the door, they are left alone.
"I'm surprised to see you at this time of night, my Lady. What brings you by?", Rhaenyra questions with a gentle smile
"I want to talk. And please, let's speak freely without formalities. I think after everything we're long past that", Alicent says with a light grin
"Although I have to say it feels strange yet nice to hear my old title again after so long", the auburn-haired beauty admits as they laugh quietly
"I know what you mean. I've always been known as the Princess. Now I'm the Queen", Rhaenyra whispers taking it all in
"But to be honest, long before everything, I've always seen you as the Lady Alicent. Actually, you've always been just Ali to me", Rhaenyra whispers using her old nickname as Alicent smiles sweetly in remembrance
"And you've always been 'Nyra to me", Alicent whispers as they gaze at one another
Rhaenyra broke the silence.
"What did you want to talk about? Not that I don't like reminiscing on simpler times. But I got the feeling you're here for more than just taking a stroll down memory lane", she says the last part jokingly to calm her nerves
Alicent blushes slightly as she lowers her gaze for a moment. She starts to anxiously fiddle with her hands out of habit and is almost tempted to dig he nails into her cuticles and tear at her skin, as she remembers the tense conversation with her son, Aemond.
Rhaenyra senses her anxiety and gently grabs her hand like old times. Alicent stares up into he calming yet intense Violet orbs, as she feels lost in them.
"Whatever it is, you know you can tell me, right? I won't judge you. Not after everything we've been through", Rhaenyra says sincerely
Alicent nodded as she takes a deep breath.
"I spoke with my children. And as I've imagined, they didn't took it well. Helaena is supportive of us making amends and wanting to bring peace to our family", Alicent confessed
"And I imagine Aegon and Aemond didn't handle it well", Rhaenyra says
"No. But after seeing me hurt and upset, I think Aegon might come around. He said he would talk to Aemond", Alicent whispers
"I just... I hate seeing Aemond hurting and deeply upset. He is scarred. Not just physically, you know after losing his eye. But also --"
"Emotionally", Rhaenyra says with understanding finishing her sentence
"Yes. And I feel partially to blame for how he turned out. I've spent years hating you and --", Alicent choked out emotionally before shaking her head as tears resurfaced
"And I-I don't want my sons to turn out like I did. Thank gods that Helaena is untainted by my father's manipulation and cruelty", she continues as Rhaenyra looks at her with sympathy and compassion
"I just... I just want --" Alicent struggles internally as she feels close to crying again
"Come here", Rhaenyra whispers extending her arms
Alicent welcomed her loving and protective embrace, as she cries into her shoulder. Rhaenyra consoles her as her heart aches, wanting to shield Alicent from her pain.
"It's going to be okay", Rhaenyra whispers encouragingly
Alicent sighs contently as she feels safe in Rhaenyra's arms. Years of sorrow, anger and resentment fades away as she releases it, crying silently into her shoulder.
After they pull away, Rhaenyra gently wiped away her tears. Alicent held onto her hand against her cheek like a lifeline, as she closed her eyes. Eventually, she opens her eyes, as Rhaenyra gazes back at her with affection and another emotion that takes Alicent's breath away.
"No matter what, I'm here for you. And I believe Aemond will come around eventually, in his own time. Nothing's forgotten but it's possible to forgive", Rhaenyra whispers
"You really think so?", Alicent whispers in a hopeful tone
"Yeah. I mean look at us. Who would've thought we would make amends?", Rhaenyra says honestly with an encouraging smile as Alicent smiled back
"It took time but we got there. And I'm not saying that it could happen with our sons given their history. But what I've learned is that nothing stays the same forever", the silver-haired woman says insightfully
"People change as does circumstances. Life is all about learning and growing. Time heals all wounds eventually", Rhaenyra continues as Alicent listens
"Even if Aemond never forgives Luke, he can never resent you or hate you. He loves you". Nothing can change that", Rhaenyra finishes her speech
"Thank you", Alicent whispers with a smile
Rhaenyra simply smiled back before they share another hug. They close their eyes and sighed as they hold each other close, never wanting to let go. Alicent feels her heart racing as she slowly pulls away first. She stares up into Rhaenyra's beautiful violet eyes, as Rhaenyra gazes back.
The two women feel a familiar spark and a magnetic pull, as they're in close proximity. Alicent lowered her gaze to Rhaenyra's lips, as Rhaenyra stares at her intensely. They lean in at the same time as they share a gentle kiss. Alicent gasped the moment their lips touch, as Rhaenyra caresses her face and kisses her with tender affection and love.
Alicent's heart flutters as she returns it. The two share a slow, intimate kiss before Rhaenyra deepens it. Alicent moans softly as Rhaenyra sighed in pure pleasure. They kiss each other for a while before reluctantly pulling away. They gasp for air, as their hearts race fast.
"I've wanted to do that for the longest time", Rhaenyra finally confessed
"But what about Daemon? I thought all this time that...", Alicent trails off in uncertainty and surprise as she is taken aback by Rhaenyra's unexpected confession
"Daemon and I are no longer together. Our marriage, if we could call it that, hasn't been one for a long time", Rhaenyra admits as Alicent is stunned
"I think deep down we knew it wasn't working. After my father died, we've had a long talk. We still care for each other as family and will maintain good relationship for our sons. But nothing more", the silver-haired woman explained before holding Alicent's hands
"Deep down, there's always been a part of me that longed for you in a way I've never felt for anyone. Not even Daemon"
Alicent felt her eyes widen in shock as it held emotion. She swallows thickly.
"With Daemon, it was a dangerous thrill and excitement. It was a carnal lust. We burn from the same fire. But it's not healthy or romantic. It wasn't meant to last", Rhaenyra says
"But with you, it's different. We started out as childhood friends. We were each other's first love. We built a genuine, deep bond", Rhaenyra whispers with a soft smile
"And yes, we drifted apart. We grew to hate and resent each other over so many years. We were torn apart by politics, duty and the patriarchy system"
"But after everything we've been through, we found a way to make amends. And our bond grew stronger for it. Our relationship started off good, then became really unhealthy...", Rhaenyra pauses before continuing
"But now, it's good again. I would even say it's better this time around because we've learned from our mistakes. We've matured. We've come a long way", she says honestly as Alicent smiles
"Yes, we have", Alicent responds back
"And that's why I believe in us. We've been through so much together. The good, the bad, the ugly. Yet we found our way back to each other. What we have is real. It's made to last", Rhaenyra whispers caressing Alicent's cheek
Alicent nodded as her eyes tear up again, this time of hope and joy.
"I love you, Ali. Always have, always will", Rhaenyra finally confessed
Alicent smiles tearfully before pulling her in a heartfelt, passionate kiss as Rhaenyra returns it. They kiss each other deeply before pulling away again as they gasp for air. They rest their heads against each other's.
"I love you, too", Alicent whispers
Rhaenyra's heart swells as she smiles joyfully while Alicent beams with happiness as well. After being apart for so long, they finally found peace. They finally reconciled. They finally confess their true feelings and are now free to be together.

*One Year Later*
It is 131 AC, when the betrothal of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lady Alicent Hightower is announced. Everyone gathers for the major event at the Great Sept.
Lord Corlys Velaryon and his wife, Princess Rhaenys, are holding hands. Rhaenyra and Alicent's children are there to support them. It took a long time before Aemond to come around, but he eventually did, as he saw how happy his mother is and that Rhaenyra is the reason for it.
Ser Criston stands guard as he does his duty, as well as Ser Harrold Westerling.
Rhaenyra watched as Alicent walked down the aisle wearing a beautiful white gown. Her auburn hair is styled elegantly and she has a golden crown with ruby gemstones on her head. While Rhaenyra feels her breath stolen. When Alicent made it to the altar, Rhaenyra then takes the cloak and put it over her shoulders. Alicent turns to face her.
"You look so beautiful, my love", Rhaenyra whispers holding her hands
"As are you", Alicent whispers back
Rhaenyra is wearing a masculine attire instead of feminine. Her middle length black overcoat with a tunic underneath and pants. She has a dragon chain attached to her attire with a red cloak. And a crown on her golden head. Her silver hair hanging down yet two strands pulled back in a bun. In Alicent's eyes, she looks handsome.
The priest wrap their wrists together to join them. When they get to the vows, they repeated after the priest as they gaze into each other's eyes.
"Father, Smith, Warrior, Mother, Maiden, Crone, Stranger. I am hers and she is mine from this day until the end of my days", Rhaenyra and Alicent recite together
Then when they finally kissed, everyone clapped while Rhaenyra and Alicent smiled happily after pulling away. They held hands as they look at their grown children, who are smiling, happy for their mothers.
On this day forward, a new age has begun as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower are officially married and will rule the Seven Kingdoms together.
