Work Text:
Wei Wuxian had always been fascinated by the idea of soulmates. They could appear in a variety of ways. For example, his sorta big brother Nie Mingjue met the love of his life by following a red string of fate the first day of his senior year at college. It led him to a freshman by the name of Lan Xichen, and they grew to be such a sickeningly sweet couple.
Another example was his beloved big sister. Jiang Yanli met her husband when they were very, very young. Their parents had gone to a party that was celebrating the birth of the heir to the Jin Family, Jin Zixuan. His sister had gasped as the colors of the world were revealed to her.
(They were promptly betrothed to be married, and despite some of the drama that came around that as they grew up, they were both looking forward to it).
Not everyone was as lucky. He had dubbed himself, his brother Jiang Cheng, and bestie Nie Huaisang the “Loveless Trio” as none of them had figured out a way to find their soulmates yet.
His senior year of high school that changed for him. He had walked in to school one day and everything was as chaotic as normal. But when he was heading towards his first period, something slammed into his chest. He looked around, confused, as he couldn’t find the source of the pain. He frowned, brushing it off as a random growing pain.
He then felt a sharp pain in his left shoulder as he was in the bathroom. He frowned, as once again he couldn’t find the source of the pain. Did he slam himself into the wall of his bedroom last night?
Then in gym class he finally figured it out. They were playing dodgeball, and he threw a ball across the line and managed to nail someone in the face. As he was laughing, he suddenly felt as if his own nose was broken. He dropped to his knees with a pained groan at the same time someone else did.
“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng called out, dropping down next to him.
“I wasn’t even hit.” He tried to say as his brother helped him to his feet and then out the door. Next to them someone else was being helped along as well, and the four of them walked towards the nurses office. He and the other guy sat side by side, and Wei Wuxian found it very odd that they had managed to be hit at exactly the same time.
What were the odds of that happening?
“Oh you poor dear.” The nurse cooed, attending to the other guy first. He had blood gushing down his face, but Wei Wuxian wasn’t focused on that. Instead all he could think about was the feeling of the nurses fingers on his skin…even thought she was touching someone else. He gasped, jumping up from the bed.
“Oh my god!” He exclaimed. When the nurse and the stranger sent him confused looks, he beamed. “We’re soulmates! See?” He asked, reaching down to pinch his arm. When the other guy winced, he knew he was correct. “I’m Wei Wuxian! I’m so very excited to finally meet you, love of my life!” He beamed.
The stranger shot him an icy glare before looking away.
“My name is Lan Wangji. Thank you.” The stranger added to the nurse. She nodded, stepping away to give them some privacy. That seemed to cause the stranger to relax a little, so Wei Wuxian assumed he was just shy. He grinned as he joined him on the bed again, offering the stranger a wide grin.
“It’s an honor to meet you, Lan Wangji. Are you related to Lan Xichen by any chance? He’s dating my best friend’s big brother.” He babbled. Lan Wangji nodded, looking up to meet his gaze. Even with all the bandages, Wei Wuxian knew he totally managed to bag a hottie.
“Xichen is my big brother.” Lan Wangji explained. Wei Wuxian’s eyes widened in surprise.
“What a small world! That will make spending the holidays together easier.” He laughed. Lan Wangji’s expression softened.
“Mn.” He agreed.
They spent the next half hour waiting for Lan Wangji’s nose to stop bleeding. To pass the time, Wei Wuxian began to tell him anything and everything about himself. He figured that Lan Wangji wasn’t the type to just offer up details about himself freely, so he wanted to be the one to start the exchange. Maybe it would show his future love that it was okay to be open and honest with your soulmate.
When the time came for them to separate, Lan Wangji surprised him by grabbing his hand.
“What’s up? Nose still hurt?” Wei Wuxian asked with a smile, tugging the door he had just opened closed.
“No.” Lan Wangji shook his head. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a slim metal case. With very nimble fingers he managed to slide a card out of it without letting go of Wei Wuxian’s hand.
He was very, very impressed, to say the least.
“Here is my contact information. I…I wouldn’t mind getting to know you.” Lan Wangji said with the most adorable blush on his cheeks. Wei Wuxian resisted the urge to jump into his arms, and settled for snatching the card away and s squeezing his hand.
“Oh my god, you’re adorable.” He gushed. To his amusement, the pink in his cheeks darkened and he chuckled.
He was going to have so much fun with this man.
Wei Wuxian loved, loved, loved Lan Wangji. And it wasn’t just because they were soulmates. They had been together for about a year now. Neither really wanted to try and be friends first, and just decided to jump right to dating. And he had absolutely no regrets.
Lan Wangji, or Lan Zhan as he called him now, was such an absolutely sweetheart. He doted on Wei Wuxian. From lunches to little presents, to car rides to and from school to amazing dates, Wei Wuxian was finally the spoiled princess he always wanted to be.
And he loved him back. He was absolutely sure of it.
So naturally he knew the perfect present to get his beloved for his birthday. He spent months planning out this night, and he was sure it was going to be absolutely perfect.
He started out by making Lan Wangji’s favorite meal. He even resisted the urge to add additional spices, deciding that some sacrifices were worth it for love.
He did all of Lan Wangji’s chores, and Xichen offered to spend the night with Mingjue (which Wei Wuxian was sure was a real hardship on his part). He made sure that his room was spotless, and that they would not be disturbed tonight.
So when Lan Wangji came home from his volunteer work at his uncle’s music academy, Wei Wuxian was waiting for him.
“Welcome home~” Wei Wuxian purred, closing the door behind Lan Wangji before pressing against his boyfriend. He leaned up, giving him a slow kiss. Wangji’s hands landed on his ass, and he couldn’t help the giggle that escaped him.
“Mn. Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji murmured when they parted.
“Go shower, birthday boy. Dinner is almost ready.” He said with a wink. Lan Wangji nodded, kissing him again before obediently wandering into the bathroom.
When Lan Wangji joined him in the kitchen, Wei Wuxian had the lights turned down low and candles lit on a set table. The plates were arranged perfectly, and after they ate and had cuddled in bed, he would be posting them on Instagram so the world could see what they were missing out on.
“Oh. What’s this?” Lan Wangji asked. Wei Wuxian pulled out his chair with a charming grin.
“A romantic dinner for two.” He said with a wink. He pressed a kiss to his boyfriend’s cheek before practically skipping over to his own chair.
“No spices tonight, babe. Happy birthday!” He cheered. Lan Wangji sent him a fond, tiny smile.
“Mn. Thank you.” He murmured in that soft way of his.
They spent their dinner as they usually did: Lan Wangji nodding along to whatever Wei Wuxian was rambling about.
When it was over, Wei Wuxian put the dishes in the sink to soak before pulling Lan Wangji into his arms.
“Happy birthday, baby.” He said, swaying them gently. Lan Wangji’s expression softened, and he leaned down to press their foreheads together.
“Thank you. It was wonderful. Will you stay with me tonight?” He asked. Wei Wuxia nodded, rubbing their noses together affectionately.
“Already planned for that, babe. But first.” He released his hold on his boyfriend, taking a couple steps back. He took Lan Wangji’s hands into his own, offering him his warmest smile. If his hands were shaking, his boyfriend was polite enough not to comment on it.
“You mean everything to me, Lan Zhan. I always knew that my soulmate would be amazing, but then I met you. You far exceeded my wildest dreams, and I have never been as happy as I am when I’m with you.” He raised a finger and pressed it against Lan Wangji’s lips when he opened his mouth to no doubt agree with him.
“I wasn’t sure what to give you. I mean, we’ve talked about sex. You want to wait, and I respect that. You are filthy stinking rich, and I give you little handmade gifts all the time. So I decided a nice dinner and a night full of cuddles would work out just fine. But my true gift is this.” He pulled away one of his hands to reach into his pocket. He pulled out a box, handing it to Lan Wangji. His boyfriend took it, carefully opening it up. His eyes widened when he saw what was inside, and his head snapped up to meet Wei Wuxian’s excited gaze.
Inside was a necklace in the shape of a key. It was a very cheap trinket he bought while shopping with Huaisang, but he figured it’d be a good leadup to his speed. He reached up, pulling out the matching necklace that had a heart with a keyhole in it.
“Cheesy, I know.” He chuckled. “But the true gift is this.” He cupped Lan Wangji’s face, expression softening when his beloved’s eyes filled with tears. “I love you, Lan Zhan. Even if we weren’t made for each other I’d love you. I know, deep down, that I have loved you in any past life we’ve shared, and any future life that comes after this one. You are the only person for me, and I wouldn’t trade you for the world. Happy birthday, babe.” He said, blinking back his own tears.
“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan breathed before crushing him against his chest. Wei Wuxian went easily, more than happy to snuggle close. “I love you too. You are the only one for me too. In any life, in any form, I know that I would search for you. I would wait for you. I would want you.” His eyes widened at that, and he pulled back to lean up and press their lips together. Lan Wangji’s hands settled on his hips, helping to lift him up just a bit so when he deepened the kiss, Wei Wuxian didn’t have to strain as much.
“My Lan Zhan.” He purred when he pulled back. Lan Wangji nodded, pressing his forehead against Wei Wuxian’s once again.
“Mn. Yours. And you’re mine. My Wei Ying. My love.” His boyfriend agreed. Wei Wuxian let out a happy laugh and pressed another quick kiss to his lips before pulling back.
“Let me clean up really quick. Go pick out something to watch and then I’ll join you in bed.” He said with a wink. Lan Wangji pressed a kiss to his cheek before obeying.
As he head Lan Wangji walk up the stairs, Wei Wuxian let out an excited squeal. He quickly texted Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang a recap before rushing through the dishes. The smoke from the candles being blown out hadn’t even cleared as he rushed upstairs. He jumped onto the bed, still giddy from a successful confession. His boyfriend sent him a fond, if not a little exasperated, look at his antics.
As he cuddled into Lan Wangji’s arms, he let out a yawn. A tender kiss was pressed to his forehead, and he looked up to meet Lan Wangji’s warm gaze.
“Night, Lan Zhan. I love you.” He said, grin growing wide. Lan Wangji nodded, pressing a kiss to his lips next.
“Mn. I love you too. Good night, Wei Ying.”
