Jimbo held Ned's cold, motionless hand tight and whispered; "you're everything I've ever had, ned." Jimbo bent down on one knee. "i fucking love you so much, man.. please, please wake up." Tears streamed freely from his face. "don't leave me, ned..."
Breathing raggedly, he reached out with his free hand to gently brush back Ned's hair, and then the bangs away from his forehead. He closed his eyes, trying to focus on the gentle rise and fall of Ned's chest.
"Please come back, ned...please don't go...I need you here." Jimbo sobbed into the night air. A tear dripped from his chin and landed on Ned's pale cheek.
Jimbo looked over at the sleeping figure beside him. He couldn't bear to look at Ned's expression; the sight made his stomach churn and tears roll down his cheeks again. Jimbo sat there for a moment, listening to the wind rustle through the trees, the distant chirps of crickets, and the faint sounds of birds singing in the distance. He laid his head on Ned's chest. Jimbo felt his heart beating and his lungs expanding. He's breathing. He's alive.
Ned's breath became quicker and more erratic, and so did his heartbeat. Jimbo sat up. Ned's eyes were squinted open. "Ned!" Jimbo cried as he took Ned's hand. His hand was limp in Jimbo's grip. "It's okay, it's okay, I'm right here. It's okay." Jimbo began to rock back and forth, whispering to Ned as soothingly as he could. "I know, I know, calm down. I'll explain everything."
Jimbo stood up and ran out of the room and blurted as loud as he could "HE'S BACK! HIS EYES ARE OPEN! I NEED A DOCTOR!" Two male doctors sprinted over. One put a stethoscope around Ned's neck while the other checked his pulse. "He's awake!" One of the doctors said to Jimbo. Jimbo steered straight to ned and began crying uncontrollably. The doctor patted Jimbo on the shoulder.
He turned back to Jimbo and said "He is doing well but still needs to be monitored until he is fully responsive. We'll start physical therapy as soon as we can. Jimbo nodded and started crying again. After another minute of reassuring, the doctors left the room. Jimbo sat beside Ned and stared down at him. after a minute, ned stared back at him, slightly smiling. Jimbo smiled back. He leaned forward and kissed Ned on the lips. He pulled away and stroked ned's hair as he slowly fell asleep.
