5:00am– Medic wakes. He very carefully removes Demo’s arm from his chest, and sits on the edge of the bed. He shakes his head to rid himself of the last dregs of sleepiness, and looks over at his partner, still snoring away loudly. He smiles softly, then gets up to brush his teeth and get ready for the day.
5:15am – Medic is dressed and ready. He sits himself at his desk and finishes the last bit of paperwork from the night before. Demo rolls over in bed.
5:48am – finishing his paperwork, Medic makes his way to the dove cote, uncovering it and supplying his birds with fresh seed and water. Archimedes hops onto his arm, wanting pets. Medic pets him. Demo mumbles in his sleep about unicorns.
5:55am – Medic makes his way back to the lab and begins an experiment on a whale heart. He is hoping to upgrade his Uber system. He makes a mental note that if he is successful, he will need to speak to Engineer about upgrades to the Medigun and other equipment, as well. Demo dreams about fighting a griffin.
7:15am – Medic goes back to the bedroom to gently shake his partner awake. He knows it will not be the only time he has to do this. Demo startles awake, convinced that Medic is some imaginary creature about to steal his soul. Medic calms him. Demo lets himself be calmed, and tries to convince the doctor to come back to bed with him. Medic explains that he can’t, it’s time to get up. Demo wins.
7:32am – after a few minutes of cuddling, Demo has fallen back asleep and is snoring, again. Medic extricates himself from Demo’s embrace, waking the Scotsman in the process. Demo tries to convince Medic to come back to bed again, but a small crash from the lab sends Medic flying to see what happened. Demo mumbles and collapses back into bed.
7:33am – Medic finds that one of his birds has tipped over a beaker of solution that he had neglected to put in a secure place. He swears under his breath in German, then goes about cleaning up the mess.
7:42am – Medic goes back to the bedroom to wake up Demo, who is snoring louder than before. In a sour mood because of the mess he had to clean up, Medic wakes him by shaking him by the shoulders. Demo startles awake, ready to fight, before seeing that it’s just Medic. He tries once again to convince him to come back to bed. Medic flat out refuses. Demo asks what crawled up his bum. Medic is in no mood for banter, and tells Demo that breakfast is in 15 minutes. Demo grumbles, but gets up.
8:02am – breakfast is served in the mess hall. Engineer has made eggs, which are fine, and Pyro has made bacon, which is burnt to a crisp. Demo eats it all, regardless. Medic eats the eggs, but passes on the bacon, preferring to have a few slices of braunschweiger from his private stash, instead.
8:37am – the mercs all head out for their pre-battle checks. Medic is feeling regretful about the way he treated Demo earlier, so he returns to his office briefly to retrieve a small bottle of German beer he keeps for special occasions. He places it in Demo’s locker. He does not leave a note. He does not have to.
8:46am – Demo finds the beer. He knows who left it. He knows why.
8:57am – the mercs line up at the door to Respawn, and prepare themselves mentally for battle.
9:00am – the respawn doors open
9:11am – Demo is killed by the enemy Sniper and wakes up in Respawn. He heads out.
10:39am – Medic is set on fire by the enemy Pyro. This is his least favorite way to die. He is not happy when he respawns.
11:16am – Medic is Ubering the Heavy when Demo sees a glimmer in the air behind Medic. Drawing Eyelander, he takes out the enemy Spy. Medic runs off with Heavy, not even noticing what went on behind his back. Demo is a little disappointed.
12:27pm – Demo accidentally runs into a nest of his enemy counterpart’s sticky bombs. Medic sees this, and uses the Ubercharge that was meant for Heavy on Demo, instead, saving him the trip to Respawn when the bombs explode. Medic isn’t so lucky. Demo realizes what happened, and doesn’t feel so disappointed, any more.
1:00pm – lunch time cease fire is announced
1:05pm – the mercs gather in the mess hall to make themselves lunch, which is usually either sandwiches or reheated leftovers. Medic opts for a sandwich. Demo opts for Scrumpy. The two share a meaningful glance over the table.
1:28pm – the mercs are once again lined up in Respawn, ready to start again.
1:30pm – the doors open, and the mercs charge out
2:17pm – Demo spies the enemy Scout making his way towards Medic. Demo shoots, but misses. Medic turns around just in time to get a baseball bat to the face, and falls down. Demo roars in anger, and unleashes his full fury on the Scout, who ends up in a thousand pieces before dissipating to Respawn. Demo helps Medic up.
2:19pm – Medic woozily tries to give Demo instructions on how to use the Medigun so he can be healed.
2:20pm – feeling the effects of the Scrumpy, Demo is unable to use the Medigun.
2:21pm – the enemy Pyro comes around the corner and burns them both to ash.
2:23pm – Medic and Demo both wake up in Respawn. Medic shoots Demo a look. Demo gets a sheepish expression and shrugs apologetically. Medic shakes his head. Demo offers a peck on the cheek. Medic doesn’t respond, but he’s not as grumpy, anymore.
2:24pm – Medic and Demo head back out into the fray.
3:38pm – Demo is sent to Respawn by the enemy Soldier while trying to defend his own team’s Soldier. Medic sees it happen, but can’t get to him in time. Medic pulls his syringe gun and shoots the enemy Soldier. The enemy Soldier dies a slow and painful death before waking up in Respawn.
4:14pm – now sober again, Demo is having a great match. Medic notices this and goes to Uber him. Together, they take the next capture point. Unable to help himself, Demo picks up Medic and twirls him around once or twice. Medic is embarrassed, but doesn’t tell Demo to stop, either.
4:15pm – the enemy Engineer spies them, and quickly sets up a level three sentry.
4:16pm – Medic and Demo run away, a hail of bullets chasing after them.
4:17pm – both Demo and Medic wake up in Respawn. They look at each other guiltily before heading back out.
5:29pm – Medic knows the round is almost over, and looks around for Demo. He can’t find him.
5:30pm – the round is called, a Victory for their team. Medic exchanges handshakes and high fives with his teammates, but still can’t find Demo.
5:35pm – the other mercenaries have gone back to their base, but Medic is still looking for Demo.
5:41pm – Medic finds Demo lazily making his way back with his arm around Soldier. In spite of knowing that the two men are best friends, Medic can’t help but feel a spike of jealousy. He walks up to Demo, whose eyes light up at seeing Medic. He picks him back up in another embrace. Suddenly Medic can’t remember feeling jealous, anymore.
5:50pm – Medic, Demo, and Soldier make it back to their base.
5:52pm – Demo heads to the rec room, bottle of Scrumpy in hand. Medic heads to his lab and takes off the Medigun and his lab coat.
5:54 – Medic checks on the level of seed and refreshes the water for his doves. Demo shares a dirty joke with Sniper.
5:58pm – Medic gets a head start on his paperwork, while Demo and Sniper begin a contest to see who can balance a beer bottle on their head the longest.
6:31pm – dinner is served, courtesy of Heavy. Bowls of beetroot soup and miniature meat pies grace the table, and everyone eats well, even though Scout complains that there are too many vegetables in the soup.
7:17pm – everyone assists in clean up and dish duty.
7:43pm – Medic starts to head back to his lab. Demo and Soldier try to convince him to stay and have a drinking contest with them, but Medic insists he must get a head start on his paperwork for the day. Reluctantly, Demo lets him go, but reassures him that he will check on the doctor, later. Medic knows Demo will forget. He smiles anyway.
7:50pm – Medic starts on his paperwork. Demo starts a drinking contest with Soldier.
7:59pm – Sniper joins in on the contest. Scout tries to join, too, but passes out after two beers. Pyro draws bows on his face with a marker. Medic continues with his paperwork.
8:12pm – Heavy stops by the lab to see if Medic would like to play a game of chess. Since there is no battle the next day, Medic agrees. Demo and Soldier and Sniper are now thoroughly drunk, and making plans to annoy Spy.
8:33pm – Sniper, Demo, and Soldier infiltrate Spy’s smoking room. Medic has collected two of Heavy’s pawns.
8:38pm – Spy discovers Sniper, Demo, and Soldier in his private quarters. It does not end well. Heavy has managed to corner Medic’s queen. Medic is as unhappy as Spy, at the moment.
8:51pm – Heavy wins the chess game. Medic pretends not to care, but is inwardly pouting. Heavy knows this and decides not to comment. He suggests that Medic take a break and join Demo in the rec room. After Heavy leaves, Medic goes back to his paperwork, instead. Archimedes lands on a corner of the desk to keep him company.
9:17pm – back in the rec room, Sniper tries to teach Demo and Soldier a song about someone named Matilda. Demo likes it well enough, but Soldier is convinced that Matilda is Sniper’s kangaroo wife.
9:31pm – interrupted by all the noise Sniper, Demo, and Soldier are making, Medic goes down to the rec room to investigate.
9:32pm – Demo is pleased as punch to see his partner show up, and refuses to let Medic go back to his office. Sniper puts a beer in Medic’s hand. He tries to teach him the song about Matilda.
10:44pm – four beers and three drinking songs in various languages later, Medic is as drunk as the other three mercenaries. Scout wakes up from the noise, sees them, and drags himself to bed. He will not find the bows Pyro drew on his face until the next morning.
11:11pm – Engie and Pyro enter the rec room to find Soldier, Demo, Sniper, and Medic trying to play cards. Two of them are trying to play poker, and the other two are trying to play bridge. Somehow, they are making it work. Engie informs them all that Pyro says it is time to make a wish. No one, including Engie, knows what Pyro is talking about. They all close their eyes and silently make a wish, anyway. Pyro is happy. Engie goes back to his workshop.
11:36pm – Sniper calls it a night and heads to his camper. Demo, Soldier, and Medic stay behind. They suddenly decide it’s a great time to play charades.
11:39pm – Demo, Soldier, and Medic decide it’s not such a great time to play charades.
11:41pm – Soldier suddenly breaks out into reciting the Declaration of Independence. Demo and Medic exchange glances. This is the classic sign that it is time for Soldier to go to bed. They manage to coax him along to his bedroom. Demo removes his helmet while Medic removes his boots. They leave a sleepy Soldier on his bed, mumbling something about amber waves of grain.
11:43pm – Demo and Medic, arms drunkenly slung across each other’s shoulders, make their way to the bedroom.
11:45pm – Medic suddenly remembers that he has forgotten to cover the dove cote for the night. Demo volunteers to go with him. Medic is surprised, but lets him.
11:47pm – Medic gently coaxes his birds back into their cage, and covers it with a white sheet. Demo asks him questions about the doves that he’s never asked before. In spite of his inebriated state, Medic answers each and every question.
11:51pm – Demo suddenly wraps his arms around Medic, and draws him into a kiss. Medic asks what that was for. Demo says he doesn’t know. He asks if it matters. Medic says no.
11:53pm – Medic and Demo manage to stumble back to their bedroom.
11:54pm – still fully clothed, Demo collapses into bed, holding his arms out for Medic to join him. Medic laughs and pulls Demo back up, instead. They take turns changing themselves and each other into their bedclothes.
11:59pm – both Demo and Medic collapse in a heap onto the bed.
12:10am – both Demo and Medic are fast asleep. Demo is beginning to snore. Medic wakes up.
12:11am – Medic smiles, and lays his head on Demo’s chest, muttering something in German about how lucky he is.
12:12am – Demo’s eye pops open, and looks down at Medic. Demo smiles to himself and pulls his partner closer.
12:13am – they both fall back asleep.
