“Oh, darling, I’m sure it will be fine!”
Mettaton had been waiting for this for months. Ever since he was first created, he knew he had to become a star! Dazzle the world! Why couldn’t Alphys just respect that he can make his own decisions?
“Y-yes, but the darkworld? How can you be so sure they’ll accept you?” Alphys worried. Her doubts weren’t unfounded, Mettaton reasoned, darkners have been known to be aggressive towards the lighters. But times were changing! It’s not like they didn’t know of each other’s existence.
“Oh Alphys, dear, you don’t really believe that?” He soothed, “People love me! Besides, if it gets bad, I can always come back to the surface,”
Alphys nodded, seeming a bit more at ease with that. Though she still had that familiar quizzical look on her face.
“I know, but- the darkworld? Why can’t you just be a star here?” She said, a bit sadly. Admittedly, Mettaton would miss his dear inventor. 'She’ll be fine up here, won’t she?' He convinced himself that she would be fine on her own. As long as she stayed out of the way of the police, she could take care of herself. At least he hoped she could. She always seemed to get into one trouble or another, especially with that fish-faced police officer.
“As much as I would like to stay, the darkworld needs an idol! Someone to make it big!” He stretched his metallic arms out, imagining all the darkness cheering his name. The thought sounded like music to his ears. “It’s so dark and gloomy down there. They need me!” The look that Alphys had said 'don't we need you too?', but clearly she thought better of saying it.
Alphys sighed, shaking her head. But she knew that once Mettaton had his mind set on something, there was no convincing him otherwise. She tried to take some comfort in how his intentions weren’t entirely selfish, at the very least. He was doing it as much for the sake of the darkners, as well as boosting his own future.
“Alright, if you really want to go, I won’t stop you,” she spoke, tugging a bit at her shirt.
“Oh thank you, darling- and don’t worry,” he quickly added, “I’ll try to visit as much as I can,”
Mettaton turned to look the way of the school. From what Alphys said the night prior, the only known entrance was in that very building. It was strange, but he chose not to think about it too hard. He wasn’t programmed to do that.
“Now,” he chirped, wanting to get on with it, “Where can I find how to enter?” He turned back to Alphys. She looked away, not meeting his eye.
“W-well,” she responded, her glasses flashing in the sunlight, “It’s in the very first closet you see at the end of the long hallway,”
Mettaton nodded.
“Then that’s where I’m headed!” He was filled with determination. He was finally coming to his big break. No more sitting in his house, waiting for Napstablook to come home. No more feeling like a useless ghost.
“Well, I’ll miss you,” Alphys, as short as she was, tried to give him a hug. It didn’t really work, with her arms only nearly meeting his waist. Mettaton just gave her a pat on the head, and backed away.
“Try not to have so much fun without me, darling!” He briskly called behind him, feeling his steel boots hit the ground. Mettaton knew he was making the right choice. Those darkners needed him.
And what better way to lighten the dark, then with a blazing star?
