Small Blessings

Chapter 1: Prologue.

Chapter Text

There are parts about it that Leo regrets.

It’s impossible not to considering how things ended.

But he doesn’t regret the ending.

He stands in the wreckage of an apartment that now feels too big, holding onto the small bundle in his arms like it’s both the single most fragile thing in existence, and like it’s the only thing keeping him sane.

There’s a decision to be made, he knows.

Later, when the worst has passed and the ground underneath him has settled, he’ll think back to this moment and laugh, because there was never a choice, not really. Or rather, he could’ve never chosen something else.

He arranges the bundle a little more comfortably in his arms and looks down at big coffee-colored eyes.

She’s tiny. Small enough to fit in the kitchen sink if needed.

It feels like pressure in his chest and throat.

She holds the universe in her very tiny hands, and she doesn’t know.

Leo takes a few deep breaths and walks to lay her down on the center of his bed, improvising a nest around her to the best of his abilities, and gets his phone, dialing a number he’s thought of calling every day for the last few months but hadn’t had the courage to yet.

He keeps his eyes on her as the phone rings, and as the person on the other end picks up, voice groggy with tiredness, it is very late at night.

“Leo?”

He watches her blink slowly, falling asleep now that she’s comfortable.

“Hey Nyssa”

He’ll need all the help he can get.
