I Lost You

Summary:

The longest length of time in Cuphead’s life as he waits for Mugsy to come back

Work Text:

Cuphead has never moved faster.

As horrifying as it is (Mugsy, his baby sister, dead and her soul leaving, her head split open) he needs to get Mugsy’s soul before it gets too high.

He catches the soul just in time and it goes back where it belongs.

Then, it’s just waiting for her to come back.

Cuphead spends that time regretting ever going to that casino, making that deal, not looking out for his sister more, not making sure the enemy was out of attacks…

And there’s memories: like when Mugsy told him who she was, helping her with makeup, supporting her when she told Elder Kettle, so many memories.

Cuphead thinks about so much in the silence and waiting.

Until, finally, he doesn’t have to.

Mugsy screams, but she sits up and she’s breathing (she’s ALIVE) and somehow fixed up and Cuphead just hugs her as they both just sit and cry.

“I lost you,” Cuphead sobs. “I’m so sorry, Mugsy.”

“I-I’m okay, I’m okay,” she said, trying to convince both of them as she cried.

They held onto each other like if they let go, they’d be ripped away from each other again.

But eventually, they had to get ready to keep going.

“Are you okay?” Cuphead asked.

“No,” Mugsy replied, “but I’m not going anywhere. You?”

“No, but I won’t try to make you stay behind.”

“Let’s get those contracts.”

Off they went.

It would be a traumatising, awful adventure.

But at least they had each other.

That was better than nothing, right?
