Work Text:
Ryuji told his mom he was bringing his boyfriend home, to have a nice dinner and have her meet him. So of course his mom prepared a whole feast for him. Ryuji told her she didn’t need to cook much and Yusuke would appreciate anything but she didn’t listen, at all.
The day of the meet up Ryuji waited outside of Yusuke’s school. Bouncing on his heels. The other artsy kids stared at him, eyeing him up and down. Ryuji ignored them and when he saw Yusuke walk out of the school he ran over to him. About to jump hug him until he saw he was carrying his portfolio, “whatcha got there Fox?” He asked, Ryuji loved calling him that. He stared at him.
Watching as Yusuke cleared his throat, placing a kiss on his cheek before he pulled out the painting, “it’s for your mother.”
“Oh Yusuke, you didn’t have to do that.” He laughed some. Standing on his tippie toes and kissing him. Ryuji was just a bit shorter than Yusuke.
“I know but I wanted something to thank her for her hospitality.” Yusuke said and slipped it back in the portfolio. He reached his hand out to Ryuji and grabbed it.
Ryuji squeezed his hand, “well then allow me to lead the way.” He hummed some. “Did you have a good time at school?”
“I had a good time, yes.” Yusuke nodded. “What about yourself, love?”
Ryuji blushed a bright red at that, “it was good, starting finally to get back into track. The new coach is great and has been helping me practice and train with my new prosthetic.” He replied.
Last summer Ryuji had his leg amputated due to the chronic pain from his broken leg, it was one of the only options, and the best option so he could get fit and start running again. Yusuke had been next to him the whole time, encouraging him.
After he was out of the hospital Ryuji asked Yusuke out and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Ryuji was getting back into running with his new running leg, and was doing a lot better pain wise. Which he was hella thankful for. Being a third year now, getting back into track meant a lot to him, and he’d be able to join right as track season started. Yusuke already promised to go to all his meets and competitions.
“My mom is going to love you Yusuke, she’s probably gonna want to keep you forever.” He joked around.
Yusuke nodded, “well she can’t keep me forever because I am yours.” He said plainly.
Ryuji laughed some, “I’m joking and awe. You’re so cheesy Yusuke.”
Soon enough they arrived at his moms house. Ryuji pulled out his keys and unlocked the door, right as he stuck his keys in the door his mom pulled it open, “Yusuke!!” She smiled. She looked just like Ryuji. Except for her black hair. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun, she also had piercings and wore some darker makeup, she wore an apron that was stained. “Come in come in! You’re so handsome!”
Yusuke had met her once before when Ryuji was in the hospital, but she was working a lot of overtime at that point. And they had simply swapped shifts after Ryuji’s surgery. “It’s nice to meet you again, Miss Sakamoto!” He held out his hand but she simply pulled him into a hug, nearly squeezing the life out of him.
“No need to be so formal kiddo!” She hummed some and kissed his forehead, there’s plenty of food, and desserts.”
“I love sweets.” Yusuke’s eyes widened as he walked inside.
Ryuji smiled, “I know I told her.” He chuckled as he closed the door, following the two of them in.
Yusuke looked around the house, “this is very nice.”
“Awe thank you, you can set your bookbags down and come eat, everything is ready to go.”
Yusuke nodded, he set his bags down then took Ryuji’s and set them down, heading over to the kitchen sink he washed his hands and sat down, followed by Ryuji and his mom.
Ryuji’s mom served the two of them and sat down, “so Yusuke what do you do at school again and how did you and YuYu meet?”
Yusuke cleared his throat, trying to chew the food already in his mouth, “well I go to an art school, so I still learn basic things there but most of the time I’m painting and working on projects.” He said, “and Ryuji and I met through a mutual friend, Ann.”
“Oh! Ann’s a sweet girl, they’ve been friends for years.” She smiled. “Well I’m glad he finally has a boyfriend. He always likes to say he gets chicks, or how he says, gets bitches.”
Ryuji was flushing with embarrassment, “mom!” He huffed some.
“I’m just teasing. You seem like a very sweet boy Yusuke.” She smiled, letting the two of them eat.
“Thank you. And this is delicious!” He said stuffing a dumpling in his mouth and burning it. He fanned at his mouth, “I’m so sorry, I live in the school dorms and they don’t provide much food.”
“Oh sweetheart, if you’re ever hungry come to me, I’ll make you bento’s and feed you!” She looked at Ryuji, “why didn’t you tell me?!”
“Because he told me not to!” Ryuji held up his hands defensively.
“I did tell him not to, I don’t like having to rely on people.”
“What about your mom?” She asked.
Yusuke shook his head, “I’m an orphan, my mentor was arrested for stealing my mothers art and allowing her to die. Along with-“ he realized he was trauma dumping, “I’m sorry it’s not important.”
“Excuse me mister, that is important and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Listen here! You’re important and if you are hungry and need food you come straight to me! You deserve to eat. Okay? I’ll fill your belly up and send you home with leftovers.” She huffed. Already packing up some of the dinner for him.
Yusuke was dumbfounded, “yes Miss Sakamoto, thank you.” His voice cracked, tears welling up in his eyes as he covered his mouth. “I apologize. I seem to be very emotional right now. May I be excused to the restroom?”
“Of course dear and you’re welcome, Ryuji show him where the bathroom is.”
Ryuji stood and led Yusuke to the bathroom, following him inside as Yusuke sat on the toilet, grabbing some tissues, “I’m so sorry Ryuji.”
“There’s no need to apologize. I told you she would love you.” He hummed.
“I’ve just… never been able to experience that motherly love before. It felt so nice and… oh Ryuji, does she really mean it?” He asked.
“Of course she does, and I do too, if you ever feel hungry, or lonely, come to us, you can spend the night, eat with us, anything. You’re my boyfriend and we love you.” He grabbed his hand.
Yusuke blew his nose, “thank you, I love you so very much.”
“I love you so very much too, Yusuke.” Ryuji wiped his face and kissed the tear trails. “Why don’t you go give her that painting so we can play games in my room and chill?” He asked.
Yusuke nodded and collected himself. Walking to the living room he grabbed his painting, it was a cute little scenery piece, nothing too big. He showed it to her, “I wanted you to have my most recent painting.” He held it out to her, “thank you for being so hospitable to me.”
“Thank you for loving my son Yusuke, it’s beautiful, beyond words.” She pulled him into a hug, “you’re part of the family now kiddo, no getting rid of us.” She chuckled.
Yusuke held onto her, “thank you. That means a lot.” And he sat in that hug. Trying not to cry again. Finally getting that motherly love he craved so much. It felt nice. He felt good.
