A Starry Night

Summary:

“Do you remember when we sat up at night counting stars?” He asked quietly.

“Yes. We wondered how many other omnics were doing the same.”

Ramattra remembered those nights very clearly, reminiscing about futures where Omnics were safe, a universe where he could stay forever with Zenyatta.

Notes:

I told myself I wasn’t going to ship anymore robots and yet here we are… also I’m sorry if I make some mistakes on Ramattra’s character but I’m still adjusting to him.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Ramattra was never one to back away from a mission, and this would be no different. At least, that’s what he told himself as he nervously paced the ship. This time would be different working with these pests, but that was nothing compared to the overwhelming guilt of seeing… him. It had been years.

He tried to reason with himself, trying to convince himself that this was how it had to be. He had to pull away- he had to leave. He stilled his pacing as he felt a presence enter the room.

“Ramattra.”

Ramattra’s shoulders dropped at the sound of that voice. Airy and light and full of comforting wisdom. He always liked Zenyatta's voice. A hand fell on his back, and he stiffened. The monk was closer than he originally thought.

“Zenyatta.” He answered, his voice was dark and gritty, filled with rage for the world and the irritated tone to match it. The monk didn’t say anything more-and their conversation was left at that. He felt a deep hurt shudder through his systems, he longed to say something, but no words arrived.

The null sector leader shifted in his stance, as he waited for the signal to proceed. Focus

“Ready boss?” A talon agent chirped behind him. Right, time to deal with humans. He turned around and did his best to ignore the floating monk beside the human.

“The real question is, are you ready?” He sized up the talon agent, hmph, not what he thought she’d look like. He had read the case file before the mission and had seen a picture of a rather dark figure. The hacker seemed too light and bright to be as sneaky as it said.

An ominous shadow appeared behind the hacker and solidified into a hooded figure. Ah, that’s what he was thinking the talon operative was going to look like. He assumed the cloaked figure was Reaper. Talon’s inner-council member sent to overview the mission. A mercenary; deadly, efficient, and a spiteful attitude to match. The hacker was ignoring the wraith behind her and looked positively bored. Humans are so careless about their goals. Ramattra tore his gaze away from his allies and back to the monk, still silently gazing up at him.

“Do you remember when we sat up at night counting stars?” He asked quietly, his mind wandering to a time of peace. A time of weakness.

“Yes. We wondered how many other omnics were doing the same.” Zenyatta sounded wistful in his response, his mind most likely wandering back to those nights. The good and the bad.

“Yes, well… I’ve learned that too few of them look up at all.” A bitter reply came from the Null Sector leader.

“Your mind may be in a dark place, brother, but I still see hope for you.”

Of course, he wouldn’t give up hope. Of course, he would still worry. Ramattra fell silent as he mulled over his thoughts; of course, Zenyatta still cared because he still cared too.

“Brother… that word isn’t exactly truthful, is it, Zenyatta?” Ramattra spoke softly as he bowed his head. The room had gone quiet as the Talon operatives had already left the ship, running straight into battle as he was here, reflecting on his decisions in the past.

“Indeed.”

“How many do you count tonight?” Ramattra sat down next to his friend. His legs hung off the edge of the railing as he looked over at his friend, staring off into the vastness of space. The stars were bright tonight- and yet, something or someone else was tearing his gaze away.

“Too many to count.”

Ramattra chuckled as he sat in comfortable silence with Zenyatta. The air was cold tonight, but it bothered neither of them, the breeze wasn’t chilly as it just blew over them at a comfortable pace. Small flakes of snow trickled down as powder was blown from the mountain, he held out his palm and watched as a stray flake landed in his hand. It stayed for a second before disappearing into a mysterious mist.

He watched as Zenyatta continued to stare into the sky. He was fascinated by the twinkling of the stars. Imagining distant lands and unique universes, places where there was peace and tranquility. Nature- untouched by man. A place where Omnics were safe.

Ramattra sighed as he looked up into the sky as well. He repeated it in his head again, a haven for omnics, somewhere they could be content and at peace, where they could be undisturbed by mankind. Where they wouldn’t be hurt… somewhere that he and Zen could go. They could be free from the chains. Together…

“Your sigh is despondent brother, what is it that troubles you?” Zenyatta finally tore his gaze away from the night sky to look at his friend. Sitting dangerously close to the edge as he brooded.

“Do you think there’s a world up there where Omnics are safe?” Ramattra asked, looking disheartened as he met Zenyatta’s concerned gaze.

“I believe there are worlds up there that are beyond what anyone could imagine, so yes, I do. Why is that on your mind, bro- Ramattra?”

“No reason, just wondering.” The ravager responded. He continued to stare at the monk before making up his mind on another question.“You refrained from calling me brother, why?”

He received no response from the other omnic, who remained silent. Ramattra held out an offering, his hand. Hesitantly, the monk reached over and grasped his hand, threading his fingers through the others as they stared down at the conjoined hands. Ramattra closed his fingers around the other and squeezed. This was what he wanted, but even he knew it would never last. Not until they would be safe, but for the moment, it was everything. Zenyatta didn’t tear his gaze away from Ramattra, even as the ravager moved closer, not as he put a hand around his shoulder, and not as he was pulled into an embrace.

Zenyatta’s hands threaded into the soft fabric of Ramattra’s cloak, holding onto it as he was pulled deeper into the strong arms of his partner. He leaned his head on the other, pulled into a crushing hug, arms tangled in each other as the other omnic silently hummed. It was comforting, and it was warm. Ramattra sighed as he wrapped his arms around the smaller omnic, holding him as tight as he could, not wanting to ever let go. The omnic in his arms felt fragile, delicate and yet stronger than he could ever be.

Ramattra glanced up to the stars, he wished there was a world they could escape to out there. A world where he could forever be at peace with Zenyatta in his arms.

Notes:

I thought the first Overwatch fic I wrote was going to be another ship… damn robots always win.
