“You know, I won’t be able to walk home until this rain stops,” he tries, angling his head up and straining his neck to meet Alhaitham’s tired expression.
“Is that so?”
“And it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.”
Alhaitham pretends to consider this for a second, scratching his chin too, in mock thought.
“Is it my fault you forgot your umbrella?”
Kaveh’s head slumps forward in defeat, his wavy blond hair now a flat curtain covering his face.
“No.”
He watches as the corner of Alhaitham’s frown turns upwards into a smirk, enraptured by the small movement.
For a moment, the other boy doesn’t say anything, and they stand there looking at each other, deaf to even the reverberating rain. Then Alhaitham pivots on one foot, and speaks over his shoulder:
“Enjoy your night.”
Kaveh kicks the wall with his wet shoe.
“Asshole.”
