There is no such thing as just an immortal; there will always be an addition to immortality, especially if someone is always dancing with higher beings.
The Endless are the personification of their concept and function. They existed right after the creator created things. They're older than gods, angels, and other supernatural beings.
But as life existed, other things started to sprout. Such as the representation of things. They are not endless, but they are everlasting. The difference is that: "endless" means "having no end,"; whereas "everlasting" means "lasting for a very long time, for an indefinitely long time."
Unlike the Endless that was formed into their role, everlasting ascended into theirs. The first ascension started when humans started killing each other for gods, and from then on, everlasting started sprouting.
But the Creator's favorite is the one who ascended in the year 1789 when an Endless advises an immortal. His ascension was quick, and it started when he listened to the advice and doubted his ways; he freed and helped the enslaved people. And his role was cemented when he repented and fought for their freedom until the present.
Hope has always been present. Some almost ascended into the role, but Hob Gadling, who experienced everything and still loves life; he's not perfect but keeps on doing good, and who can have all the power he can have but choose an everyday life and choose to nurture the future generations, is the right candidate and the one that the Creator choose for the role.
His duties were done by simply being him. Continuing to love life, changing for the better, and helping those in need. A simple smile can change someone's day, and a simple talk can change someone's life for the better.
Unlike the old/ original Endless, he doesn't have a realm; his so-called kingdom is the waking world. Another thing is that once he stepped into the dreaming, everyone that is dreaming at that moment dreams of nothing but hope and love.
Another thing is that he's tied in with the story of the endless. The function of the endless circles around Hob, around humanity, around Hope. And it started when Destiny directed Death to help Dream see the beauty of humanity by going into the tavern where they meet Hob. Despair and Desire keep the human alive as Hob sees Destruction around him, and he walks on the thin line between Delirium and Delight.
Hope of the Everlasting will always be the creator's favorite creation. As Dream enters the new inn and sees his friend, he immediately knows something has changed. And as they talk,
he feels something, like when you finish a puzzle after a long time trying to put the pieces together like he's in the right place.
And that is where he understood that for hundreds of years, Hob completed him. Just like how dreams and hopes exist together as complete each other.
