Chapter Text
[Enter] Chorus.
Gakushu Asano.
(Y/N) (L/N).
These two were very different people.
And yet for some reason.
Some terrible reason.
Fate decided to put them together as soulmates.
For context, let's start off with their childhood.
It was a colorless world for the both of them, quite literally actually. They were both diagnosed with monochromacy, or complete colorblindness. However, doctors couldn't figure out what parts of their eyes were affected, so they couldn't tell what kind of monochromacy it was.
The world wasn't just black and white. The world came in different shades of grey.
For some reason, even with their disadvantage of monochromacy, Fate made sure to keep them safe when it came to traffic lights or crosswalk signals.
Yet, even though they saw the same dull color, one of them found a way for it to be bright.
Here enters (Y/N) (L/N). An independent girl who comes off as average to others, but is actually hardworking and stubborn. Despite holding herself to her own high standards, she feels as though she'll never reach them and decides to be content with where she stands. When it came to others she didn't know, she couldn't care less about their opinions.
However, the opinion of her loved ones mattered to her; even if she didn't want to admit that.
When her parents learned that she couldn't see colors, they described them as feelings to (Y/N). For example, to describe the color red, her mother made (Y/N) stand in the summer heat. For yellow, her father made her stand in autumn's sunlight. For green, it was the feeling of grass and leaves. As for blue, they brought her to the beach and dipped her hands into the water.
This made her life colorful, maybe a bit more than the regular person.
Unfortunately, when she was around the age of ten, both of them passed away in a tragic car accident. From then on, she moved in with her grandmother and aunt.
Enter Gakushu Asano. The one who learned to live with his grey life. He learned to thrive what he had.
He wasn't close with his father. In fact, the two of them clashed all the time.
That's not an exaggeration.
They always tried to be better than each other, which led Gakushu to become skilled in quite literally everything.
When his father made the executive decision to force him into an arranged marriage, his dull world seemed to become a little bit more faded. When he turns eighteen, he'll get married to one of his father's 'friends's' daughters.
When he met the girl, he found that she was exceptionally annoying. A nuisance. A bother. While he did have his fair share of girls who constantly fangirled over him or asked him out, he had no interest in dating any of them. He had other things to be dealing with.
However, his father put him in a tight spot.
In the Asano abode, love was a weakness.
Love required a person to let go of their pride.
Gakuho established this once his wife, Gakushu's mother, passed away.
If Gakushu were to decline, Gakuho specifically told him that he'd assume that he'd rather fall in love with someone and let go of his pride.
Now, Gakushu didn't want that one bit, so he decided he'll go through with the marriage. He wasn't going to lose.
He wasn't going to let go of his pride.
He wasn't going to let his father win.
~~~~
Now, we come to their second year of junior high.
We all know that Gakushu Asano ruled above everyone everyone in Kunugigaoka Junior High. Even if he was just a second year at the time, he set himself higher standards than anyone else. This made him the best, even with his grey world.
Naturally, this pissed off (Y/N) (L/N). She rolled her eyes at any girl who would gush about him within fifteen meters of her. She hated the bullshit idea of 'just because he's the board chairman's son he's better than everyone'. She'd never seen him in person, only through pictures her friends would show her.
Her grades were only a few points higher than average, which the school just rounded down to average. This kept her a nice tight spot in Class B.
She also had a slight attitude, especially during middle school. She had a tendency to talking back to teachers when their verdicts didn’t make sense to her.
People constantly warned her that she would get thrown into E Class with that attitude, but she didn't really care.
She had no idea how her aunt had somehow convinced her to go to that god awful school, but lo and behold she did.
One day, (Y/N) was riding her bike to school.
She was about to cross the street at an intersection, but angrily skidded to a stop when she saw that the sign had changed.
"Shit..." She cursed and placed her foot off the pedal and onto the concrete sidewalk.
She didn't notice, but Gakushu was right there beside her.
Gakushu usually rode to school in a very expensive looking car. However, today's temperature was very nice and he wasn't going to miss a chance to feel something in his dull life.
He was also waiting for the sign to change.
Both completely colorblind teens were waiting for the slightest change in the shade of the walking sign. This was something they both had gotten used to.
Fate, however, carefully watched over them. They made sure that nothing would happen to the pair.
"If you're that concerned about being late, then I implore you to leave the house earlier," He advised.
This made (Y/N) irk. She did not give a single damn if she ended up late. What did annoy her was the fact that the flow of her lovely bike ride was interrupted.
Also, who the fuck was this asshole to tell her what to do?
"Oh yeah?" She hummed and looked to the taller male, "Just how ear-"
She paused when she noticed something different about this boy.
Everything about him was grey, as per usual.
Other than his eyes.
His eyes were sharp like she had seen in pictures, but she had never seen that color before.
Even if she didn't know the name of it, it was such a pretty color.
Gakushu looked down at her, about to say something back.
That was until he saw her eyes as well.
Everything about her was grey.
Yet her eyes were glowing with an extraordinarily different color.
The two kept staring into each other's eyes in shock.
For some reason, their hearts were beating faster in their chests. It was like an outside force was making them feel that way.
They were both speechless.
But they didn't say anything to each other.
~~~~
Both of them decided not to mention it to either of them.
Why?
Oh, because they don't like each other.
Gakushu knew about the girl with the habit of talking back. He was definitely uninterested in a person like her.
On the other hand, we all know how (Y/N) feels about him. She hated him.
They just don't like each other.
They told no one about it and assumed that their eyes were just playing tricks on them.
Unfortunately for them, Fate had other plans. They were very determined for the two of them to end up together.
Several months later, (Y/N) ended up walking to school.
Some “very rude person” decided to run over her bike, so that meant no bike riding until she could afford repairs.
She was scowling and grumbling her whole way to school.
It was another brilliant day with good weather, so Gakushu was also walking to school.
(Y/N) waited at the very same intersection for the sign to change. Because of the fact that she was colorblind, she had to pay very close attention to when the signs changed or not.
(Y/N) did not feel like getting run over today.
She heard someone walk up beside her, making her shuffle to the side again.
Neither of them spoke a word.
Once the sign changed, (Y/N) started walking.
That was until Gakushu realized that an upcoming car didn't look like it was about to stop.
Now, Gakushu didn't care much for other people who didn't have much value to him, but was he going to inconvenience himself by being a witness to a girl getting run over?
No.
He lunged forward, curled his fingertips over her bare forearm and pulled her back onto the sidewalk. This was just in time because not even a split second after, the car had sped right on by.
(Y/N) would have flipped off the driver that was speeding off; however, her eyes were widening at the sight of the world around her.
Gakushu hadn't let go of her arm yet. He was busy looking around at the area.
Why?
Because the world was no longer grey. A wave of vibrant hues consumed the setting around them.
It was colorful and bright.
The source came from where they made skin contact.
The world was filled with hues that they didn't know the names of. Well actually, they heard of names from other people, but they couldn’t tell which was which at the moment.
Gakushu looked back to the face of the girl that he was still holding onto.
He didn't know the names of the colors, but he thought she looked beautiful in color.
With her beautiful (s/c) skin, her (h/l) (h/c) locks, and those bright (e/c) irises that he had seen before, her whole look came together.
She was gorgeous.
(Y/N) looked back to the boy who was still holding onto her.
She didn't know the names of the colors, but she could see why some students would gush over him. He wasn’t exactly her type; nevertheless, he was still handsome.
He had strawberry blond hair, fair skin that was astoundingly clear, and of course, the violet eyes that she had seen before.
She gasped and shook her hand out of his grasp.
"What did you do to me?" She asked.
Gakushu scowled, "I saved you from getting run over?"
"Thank you, but I mean other than that," She furrowed her eyebrows with confusion and shook her head, "Why can I see color now?"
Gakushu wasn’t surprised; per se, he was still perplexed.
”You were colorblind as well?”
Neither of them spoke after that question. Instead, they went their separate ways. (Y/N) skipped school that day and ran home, frantically asking her grandmother and aunt what was happening to her.
She was frightened and nervous. She didn’t know what was going on.
Both of her guardians were unbelievably happy for her; however, she couldn't seem to get a proper answer out of either of them.
However, her aunt did suggest one thing after hearing that she had made contact with a person.
"Maybe you're part of that small percentage in the world that has a soulmate."
(Y/N) cynically laughed and told her that soulmates don't exist.
What really left (Y/N) speechless was that her aunt also found her soulmate. On her aunt's ankle was the name of her soulmate, which was also the name of her boyfriend.
(Y/N)'s heart dropped at this. She didn't want Gakushu Asano, the board chairman's son, as her soulmate.
Out of all people in her town, why did it have to be him?
(Y/N) did her own research.
According to said research...
"Colorblind, but suddenly able to see color after making contact with someone? Able to see a red string tied to your pinky that's tied to someone else's pinky? Writing on your body only to realize that's not your handwriting and you didn't write that on yourself? Something similar or a mixture of some?
"Congratulations! You're part of the 8% of people in the world who are able to find their soulmate! Most of the time, two or more of these things work for a pair, so try it out with your significant other!"
"NO WAY!"
"(Y/N), language!" Her aunt called to her from the kitchen.
"Sorry!" She apologized and then looked back to her tablet, "'Mixture', huh? If I can't see the red string, then maybe we're not actually soulmates and I'm just paranoid... So what if...?"
She jumped out of her bed and approached the mirror, picking up a black marker. Before she did anything, she looked at herself in the mirror. Her grandmother and her aunt had told her that she had (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes. She didn't think she'd ever see it in her entire life.
Her whole life she believed that she was fully colorblind.
She uncapped the marker and wrote on her right cheek. She smirked when she read over what she had written.
~~~~
Gakushu stood in front of the student council with his amicable and benevolent smile.
"For the sake of our gracious school, we must band together and live up to our academy's name," He announced.
Instead of getting a room full of claps, all he got was confused stares and quiet giggles.
"Um... President?" Seo Tomoya called out to him.
"Yes?" Gakushu questioned.
"You have something right... here..." Teppei Araki pointed to his own right cheek.
Ren Sakakibara took out his own phone to use as a mirror.
Gakushu irked when he read the writing.
"Gakushu Asano is a cow."
His eyebrow twitched as he walked out of the room.
"Please, excuse me for one moment."
He made his way to the boys' restroom and tried to clean off the writing.
It wasn't coming off.
He knew for a fact that wasn't his hand writing.
This was the second weird thing that happened to him today. First, his world exploded with color and now writing appeared on his cheek.
Writing that wasn't coming off.
Ren walked into the restroom with a suggestion, "You said that you can see color now, right?"
"Yes and what of it?" Gakushu scowled, still trying to rub off the writing.
"Did you start to see color after touching someone?" Ren questioned.
"Yes," Gakushu turned to him, crossing his arms.
Ren's eyes widened slightly, but he chuckled, "I can't believe I'm saying this to you, but you might have just found your soulmate."
Gakushu scoffed, "Don't be ridiculous. Soulmates don't exist and I do not have one."
"I'm serious," Ren held out a pen for him, "Try writing on your other cheek. Ask if someone is receiving your message."
Gakushu stared at him for a moment with a glare. He took the pen from his hands and clicked it. He began to scribble something onto his left cheek.
~~~~
(Y/N) breathed a sigh of relief when she didn't get anything within the first few minutes. She was about to fall back onto her bed and take a nap, until she saw the red pen lines of words forming on her left cheek.
"If you get this on your cheek, write back. By the way, I am not a cow."
Her chest filled with dread as she furrowed her eyebrows in distress. She wiped off her previous writing on her right cheek and wrote.
"Don't fucking tell me we're actually soulmates."
She quickly got a response.
"Please refrain from writing profanities on my cheek please."
The writing wiped off and was replaced with a question.
"Is this (Y/N) (L/N)?"
She let out a groan and wrote back.
"Unfortunately."
She didn't get a response back for a few minutes. Then, the words Gakushu wrote disappeared and were replaced with different ones.
"This is a mistake."
(Y/N) scowled and wiped off her previous response.
"Yeah, I know."
~~~~
Several weeks later, the two never spoke to each other again. (Y/N) was inevitably thrown in to Class E not because of her grades, but mostly because of her attitude. This made Gakushu even more revolted by the fact that they were soulmates.
Let’s just say that Principal Gakuho didn’t take too kindly to some of her very sharp words.
In E Class, (Y/N) found that she felt right at home. When she got transferred to 3-E, she had lost her friends which kinda hurt, but it wasn't like they were that close anyway.
She already knew Yuma Isogai and Hiroto Maehara since her grandmother’s house was relatively nearby where they lived.
In addition, she had met Nagisa Shiota, Sugino Tomohito, Kaede Kayano, Manami Okuda, Yukiko Kanzaki, and her now best friend, Rio Nakamura.
She had told Kaede and Rio about her unlucky situation with the board chairman's son. Respectively, they gave her a look of pity and one that teased her.
She also became good friends with Kirara Hazama due to a common interest in classic and dark literature. That led her to become well acquainted with the Terasaka gang. Taisei Yoshida even helped repair her bike that was run over.
She also met Karma Akabane, someone who she accidentally took interest in.
Not only that, she had met Korosensei, Class E's doting teacher that they had assassinated the night before their graduation. It was a melancholy experience for everyone in the class.
For (Y/N), Korosensei was the teacher that convinced her to strive for better grades. He helped her realize what she wanted to be once high school passed. He revealed her hidden potential, which allowed her to tie with Karma for the first place in the end of year exams.
Right above Gakushu Asano, her unfortunate soulmate.
Instead of rubbing it in his face like she wanted to, she opted not to. The two had made an unspoken agreement to not even interact with one another.
They didn't want anything to do with each other.
~~~~
Years passed and the two of them were second year students at Kunugigaoka High.
(Y/N)'s attitude mellowed out after Korosensei had chewed her out. Her attitude problem was now a minor issue and could easily be calmed down.
She was still blunt and honest though.
She hopped on the money grind. In her first year of high school, she got a job at cafe called 'Lucette's."
One of the main things she developed a skill in was art.
That's right. Once she had learned the names of all of the colors she saw, she immediately began to work on her art skills. In her free time, she began to sew and embroider colorful patterns into cloth.
Eventually, she saved up enough money to move out and give her aunt and grandma one less mouth to feed.
Within that three year time skip, her aunt had gotten married to her soulmate. (Y/N)'s aunt had suggested that her husband, which was now (Y/N)'s uncle, move in with them.
They were not expecting to give birth to a set of triplets. Two boys and one girl.
So, (Y/N) moved out a few months ago and into a rented apartment. She had filled it with old furniture her aunt and grandma were no longer using.
She grew a few centimetres taller and her body matured a bit more. She had dyed the tips of her hair (f/c), taking full advantage of the fact that she could see color now. Whenever she wasn't at school, she would put on light makeup for work. This included eyeliner, mascara, and maybe a little bit of lip makeup.
Even with all of this time, Gakushu and (Y/N) never spoke much to each other.
They were both mildly irked when Fate decided to put them in the same high school class.
~~~~
Now, Fate was literally looking down upon the both of them. It had been three years since the two of them found out they were soulmates, yet nothing seemed to be happening between the two of them. They were seventeen now, yet there was no progress whatsoever in their relationship.
Fate hated being wrong, so they took it upon themselves to give them a push.
(Y/N) had gotten back from school. She threw her schoolbag onto the floor and slumped her body onto the couch that was passed down from her grandmother.
She let out a sigh and pulled off her tie. She unbuttoned the first few buttons of her shirt.
"God, I hate school," She mumbled.
After realizing that she had work in an hour, she took a shower and she wrapped her towel around herself. She began to observe herself in the mirror.
Sometimes it still made her awe at the fact that she could see color now.
She started to dry her hair, but paused when she noticed her reflection was not moving with her.
She froze when she saw herself wave at her.
In a thick, British accent, her reflection spoke.
"Hi, so you know how you have a soulmate?"
(Y/N) blinked a few times.
"I'm the one who decided to make that happen!"
(Y/N) narrowed her eyes at her own figure in the mirror.
"Nice to meet you! I'm Fate itself!"
Did I... eat something?? Or am I going insane?
And this is where the story begins.
[Chorus Exits]
