Work Text:
When Nick walks home that Friday night, he's not greeted by his dog by the door as he usually is, which makes him worried. He closes the door and takes off his coat, now listening to the sound of the little paws hurrying against the floor. Seconds later, Daisy shows up wiggling her tail and jumping around him.
"Hi girl, how was your day?" Nick kneels down to greet the dog and he notices her nose is white with something . Is that… Flour? "What have you been up to, Dais?" He asks as if the dog is going to reply to any of his questions.
Standing back up again, he scans the living room and the office for a sign of his husband, but the smell of something burnt is what truly guides him towards the kitchen.
The scene that greets him is… Interesting.
Charlie has his back to him and a wooden spoon in his hand, mixing something up in a bowl. Every surface around him is dirty with some sort of powder. On the left side of the counter it looks like flour, but the space on his right looks like a mix of sugar and… Chocolate?
"Need an extra hand there, love?" Nick finally speaks and Charlie jumps, dropping the spoon on the ground and turning around with a hand on his chest.
"Are you trying to kill me?" He speaks, breathless, and Nick can't help but let out a giggle at the sight of his husband. Charlie has an apron on but the pattern of it is barely visible because the mix of flour and dough somehow glued to it. There is flour around his face and hair too and Nick finds it adorable.
"I'm not, but apparently the kitchen is." He replies with a smile, taking another look around the messy kitchen as he takes a few steps towards the curly boy. "What exactly were you trying to make?" Charlie crosses his arms when he hears the question, rolling his eyes at the taller boy in annoyance.
"For your information, I did make it." He states proudly. "It just took me a few tries." He shrugs and a noise makes them both jump. Charlie clasps his hands together with a smile. "Ha! They're ready." Opening up the oven, he pulls out a tray of…
"Are those…" Nick tilts his head as he approaches the tray on the counter and takes a look at it. "Cookies?"
"Yes." Charlie replies as if it's obvious. He holds up a mold in the shape of a christmas tree and points back at the tray. "Christmas cookies." Staring at the mold and then back at the cookies, Nick smiles fondly.
"The format is very… Organic." He tries to hold back his laugh as he looks back at his husband with a grin.
"Shut up." Charlie complains but can't help but smile back. "At least I actually made them this time instead of giving up after the first try." He rolls his eyes, taking the apron off and placing it aside. Nick takes a few steps closer and raises his hand, wiping some of the flour out of the other boy's cheek.
"And how many tries did it take this time, exactly?" Nick teases, wrapping his arms around Charlie's waist and pulling him closer.
"A few…" Is what he replies before standing on his tiptoes to kiss his husband fully on the lips. Charlie wraps his arms around Nick's neck and pulls his head back as he remembers something. "Wanna help me decorate them?" His excitement makes his husband smile, stealing another kiss from the curly boy, that giggles. "You have flour on your nose." Raising his hand, he wipes it off with his thumb.
"You have flour on you ." Is what the taller boy replies, making the other groan, dropping his head back. Nick laughs, leaning in to press a kiss to Charlie's cheek. "Ok, game plan. I will organize some of the mess in the kitchen while you take a shower. Then we can decorate the… Organically shaped cookies together."
"Are you making fun of my baking skills?" Crossing his arms again, Charlie frowns, which only makes Nick giggle again.
"Me? I would never ." Putting his hand on his chest dramatically, he grabs the boy's face between his hands. "I love you."
"And my baking skills?" He is teasing now, with a smirk on his face.
"Yes, Char, I love everything about you." Pecking him on the lips, he draws back again. "Including your lack of baking skills."
"Nicholas!" He whines but doesn't pull back when Nick pulls him for another kiss, because of course he doesn't.
Instead, he leans forward, bringing their bodies closer together and wrapping his arms around the boy who's been his home for over ten years.
—
"They're kind of cute." Nick tilts his head to admire his work. He made some sort of drawing on one of the cookies, adding colorful sprinkles on top of it. "Aren't they?" He looks at his husband, who seems to be concentrating on making a Christmas hat on one of the biscuits. He looks up for a second, and drops his tools to go and admire the other boy's work.
"It's a cute mug, very… colorful."
"That was supposed to be a heart." Nick complains and the curly boy giggles.
" Oh ." He tilts his head to get a better look. "Ok, if you say so."
" Charlie !" Nick drops his head on the boy's shoulder and they both laugh at their baking disaster. "Well, at least they're edible… Right?"
"I mean…"
"You haven't tried it?" Raising his head, the blonde guy laughs. "Really?" Charlie shrugs and Nick grabs a cookie, taking a bite. He eats it without saying another word, and immediately grabs another one.
"Ok, you didn't die so that means we're good, right?" The curly boy says after a few seconds with no words from his husband, losing his patience. Nick grins, grabbing one of the cookies and putting it in Charlie's mouth.
"It's really good, love." He says with a smile. "Like, really, really good."
"Wow, look more surprised, why don't you?" Charlie teases with a laugh and Nick blushes, giggling.
"Sorry. What I meant is… It is obviously very, very good, my genius husband." He pecks the boy's cheek, wrapping one of his arms around one's waist and bringing him close.
"You really think so?" He frowns, looking back at the man in front of him.
"Yes. I really, really think so." Nick pecks him on the nose, and Charlie comes closer for a hug. "You're amazing." Nick says against his hair, wrapping his arms tighter around his soulmate.
"I love you." Charlie says after a few seconds of silence. "I love our life." He says, and Nick nods.
"I love our life too. So much."
The life they built together is everything they always dreamed of, and keeps getting better after each year they spend together. It's like they keep falling more and more in love with each other when some would say that it would be impossible to do so after so many years.
There is no such thing as something impossible when it comes to Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, in whatever universe they find themselves in. They always find each other. And they always will.
