ever cold-burning heart

Summary:

The Ultimate Debater, Damon Maitsu, doesn't know love nor friendship. It's an unknown concept to him, which is why when he reveals the truth to his class about the reality of the so-called Ultimates and their morals, he's not surprised that he got backlash. It isn't until he realizes his reality that he feels fear for the first time in awhile.

Wolfgang Akire was the optimistic one in the group, reassuring the whole class and having the exact opposite opinion as Damon. He wonders how he does it.

Chapter Text

His heart wrenched from the inside out, Damon kept his breath steady as he went back into the elevator. This was not the usual day for the Ultimate Debater, but the news the whole class had received today was probably going to end up being his downfall.

Through his rush-filled panic, his words poured out of his mouth – words full of contempt and doubt for his strange yet optimistic classmates. They all had single-handedly believed that they would all just be one big, happy family and not fall into the hands of Tozu. Easy to say for a class of Ultimates, but if the whole world was watching them through a television screen right now, Damon was close to certain that everyone would be casting their uneasiness.

Nowadays, a phrase was becoming more and more known to the public ear: “With each day, the Ultimate Talent Program hands out yet another Ultimate Talent like a free sample.”

This refers to all the Ultimates out there with nonpractical talents, like, in Damon’s honest opinion, half of the people in this elevator.

Damon glances to one of the Ultimates, whose talent consisted of their accomplishments at the sea, apparently memorizing every map to heart. The Ultimate Ship Captain…? What kind of talent was that supposed to be anyways?

But, maybe, I’m just being ignorant.

His heart was telling him differently, screw his core for being so apathetic , but he simply could not care enough to find it in himself. Damon knew that he was an asshole to most, it was just who he was as a person. But, somehow, it stood as an actual shock to some people – ? All he could do was scoff as they clearly had not thought ahead of their feeble minds to think about it. He was the Ultimate Debater , for crying out loud. It had to come from somewhere

When he was young, he pushed past the thoughts of not being seen as friendly enough to approach to his peers in class. There were more important things to focus on afterall – his grades, his education, his supposed talent he had in winning every debate he had participated in… Friends started to shift down his priority list eventually, and now, he had none of them.

He was okay with that, Damon didn’t need a single friend as long as he knew he had an Ultimate talent.

That’s why he had to decided to attend Eden’s Garden Academy, a school that had scouted for people like him with academic talents. When he had received the letter in his mailbox, he had been so excited, practically ripping it open in his shock – he managed to slowly tear it open, being careful to not destroy the emblem on the envelope that clearly costed more than his life savings.

Now that he was here… in this so-called academy, he wasn’t sure whether he was being tricked or scammed or tested like a lab animal, but all he knew was that his life was starting to become a laughing stock, a circus.

Why had he been put with all of these idiotic, naive people? Then why had he been forced to investigate some kind of fake murder scene to find a fake killer then to reveal that this was going to become an everyday scene to them except with a real killer?

It all had to be some kind of joke…

He told himself this throughout the whole elevator ride.
