Work Text:
Dimly lit rooms and cozy covers were meant to instil comfort and warmth to oneself. But that wasn’t what she was feeling.
No, it was a sense of constriction, tightening ever slowly, air thinning out- grinning teeth glinting in the ever darkening air, thick pine trees surrounding , no humanity in sight-
“Taylor.”
And suddenly she awoke, from that gut wrenching nightmare. She could feel her own heavy breathes, hear her heartbeat pounding in her ears, as she slowly tried to calm herself down.
As she glanced up, she made eye contact, and her attempt to calm down vanished,“A-Ashlyn, I…”
Then a hand was cupped against her cheek, “Are you alright?” She whispered, “…Was it another nightmare?”.
She didn’t even bother to attempt forming words, and nodded.
Ashlyn wasn’t the best comforter, but familiarity and shared conflicts (or surviving from phantoms, perhaps) tend to make two girls understand each other a hell of a lot more than you’re average friendship.
These nightmares weren’t as rare as considered normal, they were frequent, not even just while asleep, it followed everywhere they went: reflections, shadows, corners.
But when you have someone by your side to share it with, it becomes just that little bit easier to deal with.
“Thank you”. She gave her a puzzled look, but was cut of when Taylor continued, “For being here. I usually have Tyler doing this, but… you always do a better job”.
“I don’t feel like I do anything though…?” She looked away bashfully, eliciting a smile on her face.
“Oh you do more than enough, Ash~” Taylor giggled as she hugged her back down under the covers, Ashlyn squabbling the whole way.
