Chapter 1: Contemplation

Chapter Text

Under the dark cloak of a brightless night, the Devil walked peacefully through that desolate land. The stage that almost held the spectacle of her own death, now laid still, far away from that world of dreams. Although this last fact wasn’t so true anymore.

Indeed, that land was no longer as desolate or lonely as before. No thanks to her. What had once been her dream world now became her nest. The perch where she always returned and, from her vantage point high up in those mountains, watched the city below. Its lights outshining the light of any star in the sky. But only in the sky.

For down there, on earth, walking among ordinary people, there was her particular star. One whose brightness only she knew. And only she protected. For she was the thief of its light, but also the one who voluntarily chose to be consumed by that fire.

High above the dome, her wings fluttered in the wind. Below her feet she could feel the gears turning. Her own creations working incessantly towards her greatest fear. Ironically, although she was the mistress of time, it was time that was plotting against her. At each moment closer to what she feared and also to what she sought.

From her private observatory, the Devil stared at Mitakihara stretching to the horizon. Although to ordinary eyes, on a night like that, it was really impossible to see anything else. For the girl that city had been many things. Field of countless battles, bed of troubled dreams, scene of death, lies, pain and endless suffering. However, it was also the place of happy moments, scarce, but just as important as the rest.

Mistress of it all, as she was, the girl couldn't help but to be amazed at the world in her hands. Although she knew it was a perfect world, condemned for its sin from the beginning. Still, the feeling of that immensity still caught her off guard from time to time.

The Devil let herself fall back, plunging into the deep darkness of that still empty building, except for herself and, of course, her most precious treasure. Which, in fact, did not really belong to her, but under her guardianship rested resplendent upon the monument that had initially been conceived only for its benefit. She took the time to observe that which she protected so much, and unconsciously pleaded alone in the darkness for the sake of the one she loved so much.

     “Just a little longer, Madoka.”
