Chapter Text
It’s been a year since monsters have been freed from Mt .Ebott. It was strange, and a little scary when it happened, the world was shocked to learn that monsters actually existed, rather than just being in old fairy tales or made-up stories to scare children. The government was very apprehensive about them, ordering them to stay in an open field by Mt. Ebott for a month or two.
The monster ambassador, Frisk, was able to negotiate with the government to let monsters move around into new areas of the world. While they have some of the basic rights today, they’re still oppressed. While Monsters have the right to own businesses, the law favors Humans more than monsters. Monsters were also very limited in where they could travel, as there are strict laws in place. They’re currently forced to live in the nearest city in Mt. Ebott.
You were one of the protesters to help the monster kind, when you found them on the news, you were absolutely fascinated and ecstatic. You adored fantasy and monsters because of the fairytales your grandmother would tell you. She showed you an unbelievable amount of books and games as well, and your fascination with monsters has never truly died down ever since you’ve discovered them. Your grandfather didn’t believe in monsters like your grandmother did, yet he would always sit and listen to all the stories that his wife would spew out. You’d hear a lot of stories about monsters thanks to your grandparents babysitting you when you were a kid, along with playing board games with them. You’d even play D&D with your grandparents, along with your classmates.
For the past couple of months, you would go or start a protest with crowds of people who had the same beliefs that you did. It thrilled you to do this, even if you’ve been arrested once or twice in the process, but it’s not like it mattered; your parents would break you out of jail in a couple of hours. You’ve gotten slapped on the wrist with a $250 fine, lucky for you, your parents were well off in terms of money. They’ve shown some signs of support as you’re protesting for a good cause, but they’re worried that you’ll get hurt during one of your protests. After all, there have been many protests that have gone terribly wrong. Fortunately, there haven’t been any casualties, but one is bound to happen soon.
Today, you’re going to go out on another protest with your friends, for the rights of monsters to monster food. It was legal, until a ‘Karen’ created a protest after she discovered that monster food had magic inside them. Due to people signing the protest and gaining traction, every monster establishment in the food industry was shut down until further notice due to the possible ‘dangers’ of monster food. Research was being conducted on monster food, despite the fact there haven’t been any noteworthy incidents that implied that monster food was malicious.
Monster food often tasted light and airy with a variety of flavors that exploded in your mouth, it would even linger in your mouth even after you ate it. You can even eat more monster food than Human food due to its magical properties, which was another reason you adored it so much.
So, here you are with your friends on the floor of your small two bedroom apartment. You were making some protest signs and doing each other’s makeup before you met up with other protesters at a public park. Your friends were a cute monster couple you met a while back.
Matt was a small, cute Green Mist Slime monster. His slime made him look like he had some nice hair that framed his face, he also had hooves instead of feet. Your other friend, Huebby, was a HUGE Skeleton monster. He had a uniquely distinctive lavender diamond shape on his forehead. He didn't talk much, when he did speak, his voice was rather soft spoken. He’d often use sign language, heck, he’s the whole reason you know how to do sign language.
Huebby tapped your shoulder to sign to you,
“Alright, If we’re doing this, I hope that we have a plan if the Police show up.” It took you a minute for you to understand what he just said before you responded, “Oh, yeah, since you guys are coming with me, I want you guys to run if they arrive. You guys are probably going to be the only monsters, so it’ll be bad if you get caught.” You hum.
“What about you?” Matt looked up from their poster to look at you.
“Ehh, it doesn’t really matter if anything happens to me.” You shrugged, standing up to head into the kitchen to grab the food you made not too long ago. You pack it up to bring it with you to the protest.
“Yeah, but I mean, you better run too. If you don’t, we’ll come get you.” Huebby signed to you as you and your friends walked back into the living room. You chuckled, patting their head and grabbing all your things. “Alright, are you guys ready to go?” You asked, turning to the door to put on your shoes,
“Yep! We are!” Matt exclaimed, getting up and giving a Huebby a smooch on his cheekbones. He turned into a lovely shade of lavender, before he also got up himself.
“Alright, let's go.” Huebby signed after putting on his shoes.
And off you guys go.

Once you arrived at the protest, there were already some people shouting and holding up signs. Once you jumped out of your car, you headed over towards the group. Everybody there greeted you and your friends, which you were really grateful for, it’s probably a nice change of pace for your friends as well. You and your friends then joined in, everybody except Huebby began shouting and marching in. You saw a man from a house across the park, looking out for a second before getting out of sight.
“FOOD IS FOOD!!” Your friend, Matt howls as he jumps repeatedly beside his significant-other. You chuckled at your slimy friends' antics as you swayed your homemade cardboard sign side to side. You loved your friends so much, you would do anything for them and their kind.
They’re very dear to you, but damn the racists, how could they not enjoy the Monster's company? They were always so kind, greeting anyone that walked by with respect.
“Those people are just a bunch of assholes.” You thought to yourself. You remember when they were first freed, they were forced to stay in a designated area for them as if they were in some kind of zoo. With that thought, you started to shout even louder with a thump in your step, your face burned with anger. That caught the attention of some others in this protest, which fired them up more.
“YEAH WAY TO GO _______!” Huebby hollered surprisingly, your skelly friend was usually extremely quiet, it made you even fired up more with his enthusiasm. Everybody was so loud and fired up, but before everybody could notice, the man from across the park yelled,
“FINALLY, YOU MEN HAVE ARRIVED!!” he exclaimed angrily. Before anyone could react, a gun was shot up into the sky as a warning, everyone turned to see the police and the chief with the gun raised up high.
“Okay, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. Either way, you’re disturbing the public, and you will be arrested!” Everyone was too stunned for a moment, before a familiar voice of your small slimy friend yelled,
“SCATTER!!”
With that, chaos was unleashed. Some people started rushing out in all directions to avoid getting caught, mainly because they could join the next riot. Meanwhile, some others stood their ground. You were going to stand your ground with those people, but your two friends pulled you away with them to get to safety.
“Wha- HEY! I can stand my ground up to those people!” You exclaimed, dropping your awesome cardboard sign.
“Goodbye, my dear friend!” You thought to yourself.
“We know you can, but your parents will be pissed and we don’t wanna leave ya’ behind! This was our first time out in a riot, remember?!” Matt exclaimed, holding you in bridal style. “I’m a big man, how on Earth are they carrying me and running?” You wondered to yourself. “But, where are we even going?” you asked, since you just realized you forgot to talk about where to go if the police arrived. Huebby replied, "I can call my cousins to assist us, one has extremely high stamina and the other has amazing ‘short cuts.’ But we gotta get some cover so that Sans can pick us up; follow me,” he said, going in the direction of a nearby alleyway.
It took a minute to process the name he just said. ”Wait, like the font?” You asked as Matt placed you back down once you reached the alley, “Also you have a cousin??” Huebby ignores you, pulling out his phone, he starts calling this cousin of his. You ignored his phone ringing, turning to Matt, “Comic Sans, like the font, yeah?”
You asked while Matt chuckled to himself, nodding to you. Huebby tapped your shoulder, you turned as he began signing,
“He should be coming soon, like really soon.” You were going to ask about how soon until someone came through the alleyway, you heard a smooth and low masculine voice.
“wassup, cthulhuhumbuser, it’s been awhile.” the small skeleton chuckled. “Cthulhu humbuser...?” You whispered, meanwhile Matt just chuckled along with him. Huebby flushed, turning to you, “________! IGNORE HIM! It’s just, that’s my font name– it’s a skeleton thing.”
“Huebby’s name is Cthulhumbus. It’s a font, but we call him Huebby because of the Cthulhu god or whatever the Humans call ‘em.” Matt explains to you, which makes you nod in understanding. Before anything else happened, the small skeleton spoke, "yeah it’s true, i mean, my name is sans, sans the skeleton. either way, are we leaving soon, or will you get caught?" Sans inquired, while combing his “hair”??
“Right, right. We should get going, well, where are we going again?” Matt gave Sans a curious look, “well, me and papyrus were at a friend’s place, consoling two friends. so we could just go back there, i mean it’s not just me and papyrus there. we kinda had a donation thing going on, or whatever you call it.“ Light blue beads of sweat formed on the short skeleton’s skull, he sounded pretty confused at the end as well.
“Yeah, let’s just go. If I know who you’re talking about, then we’ll be getting some grub too.” Huebby signed, probably tired of all the speaking. “alright, everyone hold hands, let’s go.” Sans told us, grabbing you and your friend’s hands. He then started to lead you down the corner where he came from, in a blink of the eye, the dirty cold alleyway floor turned into a glossy, golden orange wood flooring.
“well, here we are, welcome to grillby’s.” You were surprised as you let go of his hand, taking a look around your new destination. You saw a bar with cabin lounge vibes with calm and soothing music in the background with all different sorts of monsters relaxing. There was a group of dogs playing poker to your left, a group of rabbits all cheering over who would win an arm wrestling match between a blue Fish Monster with gorgeous red hair. There was also a tall skeleton that sort of resembles Huebby, just without the diamond shape on his head with smaller eye sockets. A purple spider on roller skates began handing out food and drinks to many guests around the room with the one and only Toriel Dreamurr and Frisk Dreamurr by the counter.
Even though you saw all these people, even seeing the former queen of Monsters, the person who really caught your eye the most was a man literally made out of flames standing behind the counter.
