Work Text:
The Agency had gotten an emergency call about some gifted causing chaos downtown. Oda was out of town with Ranpo, having gone with to help the younger with the trains. So, Kenji and Akutagawa were sent in first. Both were the most fit for combat, and Yosano would be sent in if any injuries occurred.
Rushing to the battlefield, they found several ability users causing mayhem. It was a mess, and far worse than anyone at the Agency thought. However, the duo dove into the chaos head first, wanting to save as many innocent lives as possible.
Kenji ran to one side of the battlefield, engaging a few enemies in combat, while Akutagawa went to the other side. Both were fighting their best, when something went wrong. Kenji slipped up, and one of their enemies got a blow on him, which he would normally brush off. But he didn’t get back up, blood dripping down his face, while his head lolled to the side.
Akutagawa looked over to see how the younger boy was doing, and saw him unconscious on the ground. It set something off in his mind that he’d been getting good at holding back. A desire to rip whoever did it apart, no matter how brutal it would be.
“Kenji!” Akutagawa shouted, panicked.
Quickly, he darted over to Kenji, just before a finishing blow could be landed on him. The attack was strong, but not win against super strength strong. Which meant something was wrong with the sunshine child of the Agency. A dreadful thought to have while on a battlefield.
Since he was wearing his jacket, he had extra cloth to use his ability on. Wrapping the teen up in Rashomon to protect him, fully aware what would happen if the enemies attacked Kenji while he was distracted otherwise. However, their enemies were closing in, having noticed that they only had one more to take out.
They had coms on, but Akutagawa doubted that back-up would arrive in time. So, he prepared himself for a battle to the death. Fully prepared to fight to protect the boy he’d started seeing as a little brother. Even when several ability users pounced on him.
—
Several minutes later, and the enemy was wearing Akutagawa down.
If he just had to defend himself, he was sure he could handle it. But, with the added person to protect, he was faltering faster than he usually would. Even though Kunikida and Yosano had called through coms to say they were coming to join the fight.
However, that meant he had to hold out until then. It would have been easy if Oda was helping him, but he was alone for this one.
Suddenly, a hit came out of nowhere, and Akutagawa was launched into a building. He moved Kenji to be in his arms as his back hit the wall and went through. Coughing up a bit of blood, he realized they were vulnerable.
Forcing himself to stand, Akutagawa ran up the stairs in the building. Finding a small storage closet to tuck Kenji in, before running out a window, drawing the attention to himself. It was the best chance to keep him safe, and win the fight.
Getting into a fighting stance, he set Rashomon forward to tear through his enemies. Despite how he’d been trying not to kill anymore, these guys hurt Kenji, and then tried to kill him. Mercy was no longer on the table. Yosano would have to put the pieces of them back together later.
—
Slicing the enemies limbs off with no remorse, Akutagawa was determined to take them all out. He was still livid that they hurt Kenji, despite not knowing how they managed to. Blood ended up splattering all over his clothes, and he looked like a nightmare come to life.
By the time most of the enemies were missing limbs, he felt like passing out. A few of his ribs had cracked upon hitting the building earlier, and it was starting to become a problem. Sharp pains coming from his chest as he coughed up more blood.
Staggering, Akutagawa refused to fall.
Kenji was nearby and injured, he couldn’t falter. It could cost his life, and the lives of innocent people who may come across the rouge ability users. So, he kept going, despite the pain, and his desire to just give up for once. Knowing how nice a break would be, but being unable to take one.
Lashing out again, he missed. Almost falling, he caught himself, and then attacked again. He wouldn’t stop, he couldn’t stop.
Harsh coughs brought up more blood. Yet, Akutagawa wouldn’t give up. Until, an attack came out of nowhere, and a blade pierced his chest. Blood soaked his shirt, and he knew the wound was serious. But, he wasn’t going to die in a place like this, not before becoming someone his sister wanted to see.
However, he fell to the ground, his body unable to keep up anymore.
The blade had been pulled from his chest, and he just laid there. Blood pooling around him as he hoped that Kenji was safe where he tucked him away. He was too weak to use his ability, but he stayed awake, determined to watch until backup arrived.
His luck just wasn’t the best though, and the group ended up finding Kenji. Holding the teen by the back of his shirt, before throwing him to the ground. The boy looked even smaller, and more defenseless than usual, as he laid on the ground by Akutagawa.
Blinking tiredly, he found his eyes growing heavier, and he felt a sense of failure. He couldn’t keep Kenji safe, and they would likely both die there because he wasn’t strong enough. Even his determination wasn’t enough to fight off the exhaustion from the fight, and the blood loss.
Despite knowing closing his eyes could spell his death, Akutagawa let his slip shut. Feeling uncomfortably cold, and smelling blood in the air as consciousness slipped away from him.
