Work Text:
It had been a long day of work for the two ex-marauders. James’ coach had dragged the team through a gruelling training session, and Sirius had been snowed under following a raid at Gringotts. As a result, both of them were exhausted and ready for sleep despite the relatively early hour. James was curled up in the large armchair, staring blindly at his book, rereading the same two sentences over and over again, and Sirius was sprawled over the sofa, his long limbs dangling over the edge in a mess of legs and arms. He wasn’t obviously doing anything at all, just twiddling his wand in his fingers and occasionally muttering spells to send lights dancing around the room.
James sighed loudly and set aside his book. It was clear that he wouldn’t be making any progress today, probably not tomorrow either. The book was an autobiography for Celeste Pinkley, a chaser for the Silchester Sirens, that Sirius had bought him for Christmas. James had been so excited to read it but it was now June, and he still hadn’t gotten past the third chapter, not because he didn’t want to read it, or because it wasn’t good, but because he just couldn’t. It was incredibly frustrating. Some evenings he would sit with his head in Sirius’ lap whilst his boyfriend read a few pages of the book aloud.
That was always a pleasant way to spend an evening though so James really couldn’t complain.
James sighed again. Then, feeling lonely on his armchair, decided to flop on top of Sirius on the sofa. His boyfriend let out a soft “ooft” as the air was knocked from his lungs, then his arms slowly lifted and landed on James’ back.
There was a beat of silence before Sirius whined, not unlike the sounds he made as Padfoot. James mimicked the noise and pressed his nose into Sirius’ chest. This went back and forth for a few minutes before the pair of them dissolved into a fit of giggles.
“Bored,” Sirius murmured as his fingers dragged through James’ hair, messing it up more than it had been before.
“We could go to sleep?”
“Nah. It’s not that late,” Sirius huffed and then chirped right in James’ ear.
“Hmm… Mrrrap!” was James’ only response.
“Mrow?”
James decided that this was a good time to bite at Sirius’ clothes, “Homph!”
“You bit me!”
“Homph!” James agreed gleefully, and then bit him again.
“Rawwow,” grumbled Sirius.
It was silly and they both knew it, but for some reason all the noises and the grumbles and the whines made perfect sense to both of them, something that had driven Remus and Peter mad at school when they ended up in a loop. They hadn’t intentionally left out the other boys, but Remus and Wormtail just didn’t get them in the same way.
James whined softly, and nuzzled back into Sirius’ neck, before letting his eyes fall shut. Despite Sirius’ protests that it was too early for sleep, a little snooze on the sofa wouldn’t hurt anyone.
