Work Text:
Amity had spent an awful night. The ghosts from her past had haunted her and the knot in her stomach seemed to have twisted into a mess that even Luz Noceda couldn’t solve.
She was the problem, by the way.
Luz Noceda.
Luz Noceda-Clawthorne since a few years.
Soon to be married.
That’s why she wasn’t here, in Amity’s arms. Cuddling with her all night, like every night they had spent since… well since they had moved in. She wasn’t here because she was about to be married.
Amity’s first ghost was the 14 years old Top Student she used to be, with green-hair and superior air.
“Why?” she had asked.
“I’m sorry?” the confused 25 years old Amity replied.
“Of all the people living in the Boiling Isles, you had to fall for her.”
Amity felt her pointy ears getting warm. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“A human, of all things!”
“You wouldn’t understand,” Amity repeated.
Another young Amity appeared by the ghost’s sides. “Really?!”
It must be the Amity that had met Luz but hadn’t fallen for her yet.
“Of all the people in the Boiling Isles and the human realm?!”
Amity rolled her eyes and avoided their gaze. She had gotten rid of her mother, she wouldn’t get lectured by miniature versions of her, even if those miniature versions were also miniature versions of herself.
“It’s because you don’t know her,” Amity sighed. “She’s the most wonderful girl we ever got to meet. She’s pretty and funny and dorky and nerdy and clever and amazing.”
Amity’s ghosts let out a, “Ugh”
“And where is she? If she’s that wonderful?” the Amity post-Abomination incident asked.
“She’s...”
Not there.
And it was stupid for Amity to get wound up about it. It was just one night, the night before the most important day of her life, the night before her wedding.
✨💜💍🧡✨
Amity had spent an awful night. She didn’t sleep much but at least she was awake now. It was the first and the last night she would spend without Luz. She wouldn’t dare to think about a life without her favourite human.
“Are you ready Mittens?”
Today of all days, she would say nothing about that nickname, even though it irritated her. But it was Emira, her dear sister, beautiful as always. She had stopped wearing her concealment stone when she had started dating her girlfriend, which impressed Amity even more when she noticed how beautiful her sister could be for the eyes of Viney.
Amity’s heart sank in her chest. She felt awful and ugly and tired and anxious and everything but definitely not ready. She was in her white tank top and light white pants, her eyes were riveted to the beautiful long light-purple wedding dress resting on a hanger. The knot in her stomach knotted itself, forming yet another knot. That dress was too much for her, she wasn’t worthy of it like she wasn’t worthy of marrying Luz.
She felt a warm hand on her bare shoulder, she turned her head to face Emira and her worry eyes. “Hey... Is everything fine, sis?”
“Can we cancel it?” Amity asked with a voice not above a whisper.
Emira grinned. “There’s no way I’ll let you make such a mistake. Besides, I’m about to have the best sister-in-law I’ve ever dreamt to have, and the only I’ll ever get. Because your brother is gay,” she grunted with a rolling of eyes.
Amity chuckled.
“Alright he isn’t really but he has a boyfriend so, unless he transition, I’m doomed to have just one sister-in-law, and her being a dorky human who’s currently oversleeping because she hasn’t heard her alarm.”
“Of course, she is,” Amity murmured with the same stupid smile she always had when she was thinking about her favourite human.
“Besides, you’re about to about to be related to the Clawthorne family... and Vee... and Camila... and Hunter.”
“Strike that last one,” Amity grumbled.
Emira giggled. “You love him despite everything, because you love her, and you love everything about her.”
Amity’s heart left her chest and flew away with its little wings too close to the sun, it was burning with love, consuming every particle of her being until she’s nothing but a mushy and sappy puddle of sentiments. “Yeah,” she whispered.
Emira rolled her eyes with a large smile. “Come on, let’s get you dressed up.”
✨💜💍🧡✨
The wedding was set in the woods, in the most special place of all the places: Grom Tree. Everyone was sat on chairs that Matt and Gus helped to build. Each chair was different and reflected the personality of the person who’ll have to sit on it. A white carpet was paving the way to the beautiful archway full of flowers mixing the colours of Azura and Hecate, courtesy of Willow. Hunter was supervising the organisation while Skara was busy with the music. Everything was perfect, everything had to be perfect, Eda insisted on this. She was wearing her favourite brown suit with Raine by her side in a simple red dress.
“I’m nervous, Rainestorm,” she said, wiping the palm of her hands on her pants.
The bard witch gave her a kiss on the cheek and softly smiled. “You don’t have to be, this isn’t our wedding.” They laid down their eyes on the golden ring resting on their ring finger.
“I know, but it’s my daughter’s wedding!”
“To think you would ever have any children,” they chuckled.
“Shut up,” Eda whined, “now I have three of them and I want everything to be perfect. It has to be perfect. She deserves it.” Her eyes darted on every part of the wedding reception’s place. “Where’s Lilly?”
Raine put a calming hand on Eda’s left arm. “With Luz, she’s helping her getting ready.”
“And Hooty?”
“Always with Lilith.”
“Right...” She casted an eye over her watch. Two hours... Her anxiety will rise for two hours before she’ll be able to wed her daughter to a Blight, a thought she had never thought she could have. Until then, she had to grin and bear it.
✨💜💍🧡✨
“I’m not readyyyyyyy,” Luz whined.
She was in fact ready. She was wearing her best white tuxedo along with a purple skirt. Some would say it’s ugly or highly in bad taste. Like Luz would care about what would they think. She was about to marry the most beautiful of two Realms, she couldn’t care less about what others would think. Stringbean snuggled against her cheek, calming down Luz a little. The knots in her stomach were entangled in an unentangled mess. What was her idea with sleeping one last night at the Owl House without Amity?!
“Calm down Luz, everything’s fine,” Lilith reassured.
“UNCLE HOOTY IS HERE TO HELP!” the owl worm screeched.
The purple snake changed into a fox and wrapped itself around Luz’s neck to comfort her.
“I’m fine it’s just... I think I’m a bit nervous...” Luz suddenly recalled the last time she was that nervous, it was when she and Amity shared her first dance, her first moment together. “I'm not sure if it's nerves or if I accidentally drank some milk, but something's making my stomach squirm,” she echoed from that day.
“You’ll do great,” Lilith smiled.
“IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, JUST ASK,” Hooty beamed.
“Thanks guys.” She wrapped Lilith in a warm embrace. “I’m so lucky to have you, and Amity will be so lucky to be part of this family. You’re all the best.”
“EVEN MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?”
Luz softly chuckled and scratched the head of the bird worm. “Yeah, Hooty, even you.”
Lilith planted a kiss on Luz’s forehead and the soon-to-be-wedded woman giggled. She broke the embrace and took a deep breath. She dusted her tuxedo and looked at herself in the mirror. “Alright, let’s do this.”
✨💜💍🧡✨
Of course, the Azura theme resonated when Luz walked down the aisle with her brother at one arm, her sister at the other. Camila was looking at them in tears, tears filled with joy. Luz had to control herself to not burst into tears as well, especially when she saw her other mom waiting for her at the end of the flowery path.
“You’re magnificent, sis,” Vee murmured.
“She’s right,” Hunter agreed, “you must be the most beautiful woman of the day.”
“Except for Willow,” Vee corrected.
“Except for Willow,” Hunter affirmed.
Luz chuckled. “I love you guys.”
“We love you too,” Vee smiled; Hunter nodded.
Stringbean was walking at her feet, in her cat mode to match with Ghost.
“Good luck,” Hunter muttered.
Vee brushed her knuckles and went to sit next to Masha in the first row, while Hunter went to Willow who was holding Skara’s hand and took the other hand from the plant witch. The scene unravelling under Luz’s eyes was the most beautiful she could have ever dreamt of. The leaves of Grom tree provided a natural dome to protect them from the summer sun.
“Are you okay, kiddo?” Eda asked in a low voice.
“Nervous,” Luz replied.
Eda snorted. “Of course, this is the first day of the rest of your life.”
Luz bit her lip and patiently waited for Amity to make her appearance. The enchanting music suddenly shifted to play an original composition. Luz saw Skara grin; this was all of her doing. The magic violins’ melody went up while the double basses quieted. It was a theme for a goddess, a goddess with cotton-candy and brown hair.
And she arrived.
And Luz’s heart exploded in her chest.
She was dead.
She had to be dead.
She couldn’t be alive and witnessing this.
She couldn’t.
Because if she was alive, that meant she was about to marry the most beautiful witch of all times. Her fantasy had come true several years ago and now she was embracing the consequences.
She was a witch.
She’ll marry a witch.
It was Azura and Hecate, all over again.
Only better.
Because there were no words, no thoughts, no pictures, nothing that could do Amity justice.
Her abomination-coloured dress was floating in the sweet summer breeze, her cotton-candy hair with brown roots was long and braided in her back. Her make-up was subtle, a light mascara line on her lids and a dark-red lipstick that Luz couldn’t wait to wear. She looked so beautiful, so gorgeous, so dreamy and so nervous. She was holding the fabric of her dress as she was walking down the aisle, at her siblings’ arm. Ghost was rubbing against her ankles then ran to Stringbean. Luz chuckled to the Palismen but when her gaze came back on her fiancée, her laugh got stuck in her throat.
“Hey,” was all Luz could articulate, a large red strip was plastering her cheeks and her nose, rising to her ears.
“Hey,” was all Amity could reply as a wide blush was spreading from her nose to the back of her neck, going up on her forehead and disappearing under her dress.
Eda cleared her throat and announced, “Ladies, gentlemen, non-binaries, witches, bugs and other demons. We’ve gathered together to celebrate the union of whatever this gay mess is.”
The crowd laughed, which seemed to calm down the two women a bit.
“Before these two dorks will exchange their vows, I would like to say a few words. And if anyone has to say anything against this wedding, I’ll be glad to shut them up.”
Another laughter rose from the assembly.
“Anyway,” Eda smiled and turned to Amity. “Bossy Boots, I’ve known you for a long time, mostly because some people of your family wouldn’t shut up about you.” Amity cringed at the memory of her mother; she was glad this woman wasn’t in her life anymore. “But then I’ve started to know you, mostly because some people of my family wouldn’t shut up about you.” Luz felt another blush creeping along her back. “At first, I thought you were just a pretentious rich kid with an anger problem. But it turned out you were just a nerd, just like my Luz. I’m so glad you two found each other because there’s no one who could be better for my child than someone like her.”
The crowd cheered and applauded; Amity’s smile wouldn’t leave her lips. “Thanks Eda,” she murmured.
Then Eda turned her head to the human witch.
“Luz, my sweet child. When I’ve met you, you were nothing but a kid looking for a place to fit in. You looked a lot like me when I was that age. But you’ve grown up so fast, mostly because you didn’t have the choice. You’ve met some wonderful people, you’ve befriended some enemies, you’ve helped me reconnect with Raine and you’ve bumped into your future wife when you’ve just wanted to study at school.
“If we’re here today, it’s because you have been nothing but yourself: an obnoxious dorky little nerd who wanted to be a witch. If everyone is here today, at this point of their life, is thank to you. You’ve inspired people, you’ve helped them through tough times... But even though you’ve been an awesome person to everyone here, there’s no life that has been more impacted than Amity’s by you. You two are a match in heaven, or in the hell we’re living in right now.”
The crowd laughed and cheered once more, some were wiping their eyes from the forming tears, to stop them running down the cheeks.
“Before the time comes for our lovebirds to exchange their vows, let’s bring the wedding rings!”
That was King’s signal to come to the stage. The tiny Titan had now the size of a teenager, his horns pointed fiercely towards the sky, he was walking with an assured pace, a large smile crossing his skull, a small tear in the corner of his eye. He was holding a golden cushion with silver rings on it.
“Thank you, King,” Eda grinned.
“Of all the people living in the Boiling Isles, I’m glad it was you,” he said to Amity and the woman had yet another blush to hide.
“Who wants to begin?” Eda asked; Luz nodded, ready to go.
“So... I had written something, but I’ve forgotten it.” She lowered sheepishly her head; Amity lovingly chuckled. Their eyes locked and Luz knew the words.
“But isn’t it our story after all? Planning everything and then ditch our plans to improvise? That’s how it all started, when I asked... well, when you asked... well, when we both asked if we wanted to date each other,” she laughed along with Amity and a part of the crowd. “We had planned things and it didn’t always go well. But in the end, it worked out, didn’t it? I have something to confess, something it took me months to realise but... I’ve had a crush since day one on you, I think. Well, maybe not day one because we both know how it went.”
Amity bit her lip, her cheeks painted red from embarrassment.
Luz continued, “I’m glad I snuck out that day in the school, because I’ve met you. And that crush is dated from covention day, when we fought each other.” Lilith, Eda and King remembered that day, more than anyone else – except from Luz and Amity. “From the moment when I showed you my light glyph, I’ve been falling for you. Maybe you don’t remember it, because it wasn’t an important moment, but it was important for me.”
“I remember it,” Amity croaked, and Luz noticed she was crying.
“Ever since, I’ve tried to befriend you, because back then I didn’t know how relationships work and I still believe you have to be friends with someone to date them, blame it on the demiromanticism if you wanna,” she chuckled along with her fiancée. “It only took one Hooty kidnapping for us to be together.”
“YOU’RE WELCOOOOOOOOOOOOOME,” the owl screeched; the crowd giggled.
“I’ve never loved someone like I do right now, in fact I’ve never loved someone before, and I don’t think I ever will. Because I don’t want anyone to take your place in my heart. You’re my batata, my partner in crime, my love, my hermosa, the only other member of the Azura book club, my cotton-candy haired goddess.”
“I love you,” Amity whispered, and she had to control herself to not leap on Luz to cover her with kisses. Her make-up was leaking on her face. She glanced towards Viney who fixed her make-up and she turned to Luz.
“I don’t know what to say,” her voice was again croaky. She cleared her throat and locked her eyes in the caramel-coloured gaze of her fiancée. “Everything I’ve written seems so weak next to it. That’s how I felt when we’ve met, weak. Because you were a human; when you arrived here you’ve managed to befriend more people than I could ever have, you’ve mastered magic so quickly and I was still with a training wand. You’ve always been better than me at everything, except maybe loving you.”
“You’re a simp!” a voice shouted from the crowd, that Amity recognised as Edric’s.
She wanted to retort something, but it would be lying. Yes, she was, but she didn’t care. She was better than everyone in loving Luz, and she was committed to it. “That’s true,” she said instead, causing another chuckle from the crowd. “And I want to do this for the rest of my life. Because when I met you, Luz, I was bitter and mean and awful and sad. I was not myself because of my mother, and the inactions of my father.”
Alador, in the audience, tried to hide his embarrassment but ultimately everyone was looking at him.
Amity took Luz’s hands and grasped them firmly. “Then you arrived, and everything changed. I’ve reconnected with Willow.” The plant witch nodded. “I’ve made some new friends, some better friends, I’ve found a new family to be with.” She gestured towards Eda who widely smiled.
Amity felt her lower lip failing her, but she had to say everything she had on her heart. “You’ve come into my life, and you’ve destroyed everything to build something better, you’ve even helped my father to be a better parent. You’ve done better than several therapists could ever do to me. You’ve made me happy. You’ve given me a place to live, a place to feel things I could never hope to feel. Every day, my only thought is to get back to you, to your arms, to that little cocoon we have, our little love nest,” she whispered that last line for it to be only heard by them two; Luz’s blush spread on her ears.
“I love you, Luz. I want this to be my first words as your wife and I hope it would by my last words as such.”
“Ami...” Luz murmured, tears softly streaming down her cheeks, who knows for how long they were here.
The crowd cheered and applauded once more when the silence dropped on them for a few seconds. Eda cleared her throat and spoke to the women which were currently deeply looking at each other, wide smiles and lovey-dovey eyes, “Right, if you may take the ring.”
“Right, the ring,” Luz said and thus breaking the eye-contact. She took the silver ring on the right, ‘Luz' was engraved on the inside. “What are the words?”
Eda rolled her eyes. “You had one job, kiddo.”
“Sorryyyy, I was busy.”
“Too busy being gay!” Gus shouted and the crowd burst into laughter.
Luz shrugged. “That’s true.”
“Come on guys,” Eda called when the crowd calmed down a bit, “we’ll still be here tomorrow if it keeps going on.”
“Eda,” Luz sighed with a smile, “you lead this wedding, of course it would be chaotic.”
The crowd chuckled.
“Alright, kiddo, repeat after me.”
“On it, mom!”
Eda’s chest filled with pride; she couldn’t have dreamt better of any child for her. “I, Luz Noceda-Clawthorne,” Eda recited.
“I, Luz Noceda-Clawthorne,” Luz repeated.
“agree to take you, Amity Blight”
A large, silly, sweet smile spread wider on Luz’s face. She took Amity’s left hand and brushed it with her thumb. Her voice became quieter, like there were only her and Amity.
“agree to take you, Amity Blight”
“as wife”
Luz threaded the wedding ring into the finger ring.
“as wife”
“to...”
But Luz knew the words, or at least the words she wanted to say. She just had to plunge into Amity’s golden eyes for everything to come to her mind.
“to share every and each day with you. The good and the bad, the laughs and the tears, the joy and the sadness. To live every day just like an adventure, the adventure we would have chosen together. The life I’m about to share with you. With this ring, I’m yours, forever and after.”
“Do you accept, Amity Blight?”
“I do,” Amity muttered, with a weak voice but a shining smile. She took the other ring on the cushion, the one with ‘Amity’ engraved in it. “I, Amity Blight, agree to take you, Luz Noceda-Clawthorne as wife.” She softly held Luz’s left hand and slipped the ring along her finger. “To share every of our moments together, the shining sun and the darkest storms. To live through every rainy day and enjoy every warm evenings. To stare at the stars although they can’t shine as much as you. To wander around, hand in hand. Live each day the fullest. With this ring, I’m yours, forever and after.”
“Do you accept, Luz Noceda-Clawthorne?”
“I do!” she squealed.
Eda had to wipe a tear rolling on her cheek. It was surely the first time she was that emotional. “I can now, for my greatest pleasure, pronounce you witch and wife.”
The crowd roared when she added, “You may kiss the bride.”
Luz pulled her awesome girlfriend, now wife, into a deep kiss, the leaves of Grom Tree falling at their feet. The stars exploded in both of their chest and merge altogether, forming a new galaxy; billions of years of memories were just starting, a new life for this galaxy, symbol of the undying love the two girls were sharing. Amity replied to this kiss, with all the passion she could offer.
When they broke the kiss, they gazed at each other, resting on each other’s forehead. Amity’s cheeks were splattered with red, Luz’s lips tasted like Amity’s lipstick. She couldn’t wait to have more of it on her mouth.
“Forever and after,” she murmured.
“Forever and after,” Amity whispered before capturing Luz’s lips once more.
