“Scar, I think the insomnia is starting to get to you,” Mumbo commented, barely looking up from his book. Scar sighed from where he was standing only a couple steps away from Mumbo.
“Come on, Mumbo. It’s nice outside for once! We don’t have to be out for too long, just for a little bit.” Mumbo finally looked up at his boyfriend, lowering his book. Scar’s expression was full of genuine disappointment, causing Mumbo to sigh softly, grabbing his bookmark and closing his book with it inside.
“Fine. But we go inside once the sun sets.” He would prefer to just stay inside and finish his book (he had just been getting to a good part), but the look of utter joy on Scar’s face was completely worth it.
They went outside together, choosing to sit near the Boatem Pole, the area unusually quiet. All the other Hermits were at a meeting to discuss the ever-approaching moon; Mumbo and Scar had decided to stay behind, knowing them in their slightly sleep deprived states wouldn’t be that helpful. The two sat down next to each other, fingers barely touching. Mumbo felt Scar’s pinky brush against his, but made no move to hold his hand, something Mumbo internally thanked him for. He knew the other Hermits wouldn’t judge, wouldn’t even question them, but that didn’t stop the fear in the back of Mumbo’s mind panicking, screaming that they would be caught, someone would see them, and only Void knew what happened to those who were seen . He shook his head slightly, as if realigning his thoughts. ‘ Hermitcraft is different. They wouldn’t hurt us. Not like the Others ’.
He was brought out of his thoughts by Scar sighing. Glancing over at his boyfriend, he saw the other staring at the moon, also lost in his head. Mumbo tapped the back of Scar’s hand gently, drawing the other’s attention to him.
“What’s on your mind, my love?” Mumbo whispered, careful not to disturb the peaceful atmosphere they had created.
“I’m just wondering how much longer we’ll be in this season. It’s only been a couple months, but with the way the moon’s acting, it’ll only be a few more weeks before we go.” Mumbo turned to look at the moon, which shouldn’t have been there considering the sun hadn’t set yet, then looked back at Scar.
“There’s not much we can do about that, I’m afraid. X said he already has the new world ready just in case, so if it does get really bad, we can leave almost instantly. But at the end of the day, all we can really do is sit and wait for this to be over.” Scar hummed in agreement, and they both sat in silence with the sun setting behind them.
With the sun almost fully set, Mumbo thought they should head back inside. He stood up, offering his hand to Scar to take. He helped Scar to his feet, but when he went to move his hand to his side, Scar kept a hold on it.
“Scar?” Mumbo asked, worried something was wrong. Scar looked at him, love clear in his eyes.
“Dance with me?”
“Scar…”
“Please?”
Mumbo sighed, gently rubbing circles on the back of Scar’s hand with his thumb. “I don’t know how to dance, Love.”
Scar took hold of Mumbo’s hand properly, placing his other carefully on Mumbo’s hip. “Then I’ll show you. Just let me lead.”
Letting go of Mumbo’s hip for a moment, he guided Mumbo’s hands to where they needed to be, flustering Mumbo with how natural Scar’s movement seemed to be. Scar placed his own hands back where they were previously, smiling up at Mumbo.
“Trust me, darling.” Scar hummed softly while moving slowly, Mumbo following uneasily. His feet kept getting caught on each other, causing him to stumble often. Yet Scar didn’t get mad, in fact, it seemed to make him more determined (to do what, Mumbo didn’t know). “Hey, look at me.” Mumbo looked from where he had been staring at Scar’s shoulder into Scar’s eyes. “You’ve got to be confident, or you’ll just keep falling.”
“Scar, in case you hadn’t noticed, I am one of the most unconfident people on this server.” Scar smiled his classic Scar smile.
“And in case you hadn’t noticed, you’ve been doing fine since you stopped focusing on how well you’re doing.” Sure enough, as the two were talking they had been slowly moving, dancing to the quiet humming of Scar and the natural sounds of Boatem. Mumbo looked back at Scar, who looked very proud of himself. “How about we quicken the pace a little?” Before Mumbo could say anything against it, Scar started moving faster, forcing Mumbo to keep pace.
They danced as the moon rised in front of them, the Boatem Pole in the back, creating a beautiful picture that Mumbo would gladly frame. They had been dancing for a couple minutes when Scar leaned up next to Mumbo’s ear.
“Mumbo?”
“Yeah?”
“Hold on.”
“Wha- SCAR!!” Mumbo’s sentence was cut off by Scar adjusting his hold on him, and dipping him, causing Mumbo to be practically upside down. “Scar are you out of your mind!? You could drop me, you could-” Any protest Mumbo could have made was lost when Scar placed his lips on Mumbo’s, cutting him off with a kiss. Mumbo relaxed in Scar’s hold, getting lost in Scar just as he had many times before. There, in that moment, Mumbo wasn’t scared of anyone seeing them, didn’t have room in his head to feel any fear. His thoughts were Scar and Scar only. And honestly? He preferred it like that.

Grian, Pearl and Impulse entered Boatem, tired from the long meeting they had just had. They all paused in their tracks when they spotted the other two members of Boatem, dancing by the pole. Without saying a word, Grian took a photo, sending it to Pearl and Impulse’s comms. The three of them headed back to their bases, making sure to stay clear of the two lovers, because none of them could bring themselves to interrupt such a calm moment.
