Work Text:
There was a reason you had kept your pregnancy from Thorin longer than wives normally did, but you had a good reason. Your husband was hugely overprotective. Like now, for instance.
"Don't you dare, Y/N." You glared at your husband, who was looking at you with a stern expression as you slightly bent down to pick up the handkerchief you had dropped.
"Thorin-" You started, but you were cut off by his words.
"No. Stay still, I will get it." You looked at him, exasperated. The fumble of fabric was literally right at your feet, but Thorin still hurried around the table of your bedroom and picked it up for you. He gave you a smile while he kissed your cheek.
"There." You wanted to scream. You wanted to do something. Anything. But everything but sleeping and singing was apparently forbidden. Reading? The book resting on your stomach could hurt the baby. Baking? The hot oven was too dangerous. Dancing? You could trip and hurt yourself. A walk around the kingdom? See above. Council meetings? There could be an assassin. Sewing? No. Sharp needles. And he had forbidden you to fight or train the minute he had found out about the baby.
You were now sitting in the hall, your hand gripping a serviette tight as you were talking with Dís.
"He doesn't let me do anything, Dís, it's impossible not to lose my mind when I'm with him! I love him, more than anything, but he is really getting on my nerves. I am not allowed to do anything." You huffed out, Dís giving you a compassionate look.
"You know that you are the most important person in Thorin's life, you and the baby. He doesn't want to lose you, either of you. He's lost so much in his life, he couldn't bear losing you atop all that." You nodded, twisting your hands.
"I know, but if you could convince him that I am capable of reading books and the possible papercuts aren't a danger to the baby, I would greatly appreciate it." Dís let out a laugh that died down when she saw your serious look.
"He said that?" You just nodded numbly, leaning to press your head against the cool surface of the table.
"Then I will surely talk to him and remind him that driving your wife insane isn't the best way to assure your wife's safety."
"Was Vili the same way?" You asked quietly, and Dís let out a laugh.
"Oh darling, he did try. But I made it clear that I would continue working until my stomach got in the way, and he accepted it after a bit of bickering."
"I should have done that too," You muttered, shaking your head, but Dís just shook her head.
"You would still be having that argument. If you haven't noticed, my brother is stubborn."

You and Thorin were laying in bed, and you were twisting and turning to find a comfortable position with the help of three pillows. You could only imagine it only got worse from here as the baby continued to grow.
"Dís came to see me today and told me that I should ... ease up my trepidation concerning you." You lifted your hand to his cheek with a wide smile.
"Darling, I love you and I am excited about the baby too, but you have been so overbearing that some days I have felt I can't breathe." He looked down, cheeks slightly red but nodded.
"I just love you both so much, I don't want anything to happen to either one of you." Leaning forward, you connected your lips into a gentle kiss, your hand still on his cheek.
"I know you do, but if you could give me a little room to live and breathe, I would appreciate it. You will have plenty of time to fuss over me when I'm so big I can barely move." Thorin gave a hum, agreeing with you as he slid his hand to your belly and rubbed soft circles on it over your nightshirt.
You stretched, rolling your ankles as you tried to find a comfortable position.
"Are your feet bothering you again, my love?" He spoke gently, already half asleep but having stirred with your twisting and turning starting again.
"A little, yes."
"Do you want me to rub them?" You didn't answer, just twisted your body so your swollen ankles were in his lap. His hands started to work on it, and you closed your eyes, enjoying the gentle rubbing of his hands.
"Is there something that you would want for breakfast tomorrow?" He asked, and you gave a sleepy smile, the heavenly feeling slowly lulling you to sleep.
"Pancakes."
Maybe him fussing over you wasn't so bad after all.
