husband

Summary:

“I think it’s only natural to imagine an engagement ring if it’s coming from my boyfriend, yeah?”
God, Rinne wishes it wasn’t imagination. He’s thought about it too much. Looked at options, considered prices (if I win big enough…), daydreamed about how it’d all play out if he was allowed to go for it.

Notes:

y’all remember that quote where rinne says “marry me” and the only response niki gives is 1) rinne’s said that to him countless times 2) it’s not possible in their country ? i remember. read hot limit if you haven’t.

also in rinne’s first fs story how himeru says an idol shouldn’t speak of marriage so casually…… the man has marriage on the brain SOMEBODY LET HIM HAVE A WEDDING

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Rinne’s too eager to keep from slamming the door, although it also doesn’t help that his hands are behind his back so he has to kick it open. “Niki!”

He nearly jumps off his bed in surprise, which makes Rinne snicker. “Rinne-kun! You’re gonna give me a heart attack sometime, y’know.”

“How, when I stole yer heart?” he teases.

“You haven’t stolen Hinata-kun’s, and he lives here too. Stop barging in so suddenly.” There’s no sternness in his tone. “What’s up?”

“Check what I made at Craftmonster today.” This meeting featured something new. As opposed to paint or clay like usual, they worked with wire. Everyone went down different routes with the material, and Rinne chose to make something he could use. Or wear, rather.

“Is it another bee painting?” Niki rises to approach Rinne, blue eyes sparkling with curiosity.

“Nah. ‘M good at those, though, right?” Beaming proudly, he sticks out his hands, both of which hold a ring. They’re each made of one long piece of wire, twisted and coiled over itself several times. “Pretty cool, yeah?”

Niki plucks one out of Rinne’s palm, turning it over as he examines it. “Yeah. This looks really good, Rinne-kun.”

“Well, ya better show me some gratitude, cuz ‘s all yers.” He pauses for a moment before sliding the other ring onto his left ring finger. It’s only a little bit loose.

At that, Niki puts his on in the same fashion and studies it appreciatively.

“Ya like it?” Rinne takes Niki’s hand in his, admiring how they match.

“Duh. It’s from you.” He smiles and plants a kiss on the back of Rinne’s hand. “They’re almost like engagement rings,” he muses.

Rinne’s eyes go wide, and his cheeks start to heat up. Pulling his hand away as he glances off, he mutters, “Ya don’t gotta say that. They’re just rings.”

“What’s the matter with saying it?” Head tilted, he drapes his arms over Rinne’s shoulders.

His face is really getting warm now.

“Rinne-kuuuun,” Niki croons, obviously clued in by the silence and the blushing. “What’re you so shy about?”

He’s definitely, totally not pouting. Not at all. “Nothin’. Just… Wanna marry ya.”

“I know that, silly.” He presses a kiss to Rinne’s cheek. “You’re always trying to propose to me! What’s the big deal all of a sudden?”

“I dunno! ‘S different when ‘s comin’ from ya!” He lets his arms wrap around Niki’s waist as he mumbles, “Feels different.”

He grins. “Yeah? You get all flustered when I say I wanna marry you? Wanna make you my husband?”

“Yeah!” he blurts.

Niki bursts out into fond laughter. “You’re really cute, Rinne-kun.”

“Shuddup.” He doesn’t mean it.

“Make me.” Niki’s tone is light and knowing, well-aware of how Rinne responds to those words and welcoming of that fact.

Rinne pulls Niki flush against him and kisses him firmly, not rough but rather urgent. Like he’ll die if he doesn’t. It always feels that way to him.

When they separate for unfortunately necessary air, Niki squishes Rinne’s cheeks. “I’m gonna marry you so hard.”

Rubbing his thumbs in little circles on Niki’s back, Rinne replies, “Not if I marry ya first.”

It’s not that simple, Rinne knows very well. But he thinks they both deserve to pretend it is. To soak up all the affection they can give one another and let themselves imagine a world where that’s all that matters.

One day. One day he’ll act on the fantasy. As soon as it’s a feasible option, he’s going to make Niki his husband.

In the meantime, handmade rings and loving words are plenty good enough.
