Summary
Diluc knew they could have never predicted what exactly would happen when they jumped back into the time portal.
He knew he could lose Kaeya like this, Kaeya knew it, too, but it was the only way. The only way to avoid the war that claimed so many lives, the suffering Kaeya had to endure, watching both the people of Mondstadt and Khaenri'ah die, stuck in between, both nations slowly marching towards their doom, dragging all of Teyvat with them when every other nation got involved in the conflict.
It was a disaster, and if their worst fears were to come true, Celestia would get involved soon, and then it would be more than a disaster.
A cataclysm.
The possibility that the Traveler's recently found time-traveling ability could prevent any of this, that chance was already worth the risks.
When they came back, the war had never happened and the city prospered. Everything was mostly the same in Mondstadt, except for Kaeya. It was like Kaeya had never existed.
Or so Diluc thought, until he heard of Khaenri'ah's royal family, the Alberichs.
