Work Text:
“Goddamnit,” Kunikida breathed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He got it, he knew that Dazai could get a little out of hand when he was excited but this was just too much. With a sigh, he reaches over to right the overturned bottle.
From where Dazai is perched against the edge of Kunikida’s ass, chatting amicably with Atsushi, a brown and white tail whips out to smack the bottle down again. It topples over with a thump, a few drops spilling out the mouthpiece. The majority of it has already been emptied onto Kunikida’s keyboard and paperwork the last four times Dazai has unknowingly gotten over-excited and knocked the thing over.
“Oops.”
Kunikida looks up from trying to dab the remains of his fried keyboard with the corner of his shirt sleeve. Dazai is looking down at him almost apologetically, eyebrows drawn in and bottom lip out-turned. The mischievous little glimmer in his eye gives him away though, and Kunikida shakes his head at him.
“Watch your tail,” He says tersely, pushing his glasses up his nose.
Dazai bats his eyelashes at him. “Sorry. Can’t help it.”
That’s not true. Kunikida knows it’s not true. He frowns, eyes sliding towards Atsushi, whose own tail is hanging primly at his side. “Atsushi seems to be doing just fine. He’s not knocked water all over my desk even once in the months he’s worked here, yet you manage it everyday.”
“What can I say? I’m one-of-a-kind.”
Kunikida can feel a vein jump in his forehead as he watches Dazai’s tail flick out towards his desk again. He has the urge to reach out and grab it, but refrains, taking a deep breath before hissing, “Please just get some of your work done instead of terrorizing my own.”
“No fun,” Dazai whines, but trots off to his own desk nevertheless. Kunikida watches him carefully, watches the way his tail swishes behind him as he peers down at a document on his own desk. It’s easy to get mesmerized by the spasmodic twitches of those fuzzy ears as Dazai finally concentrates, his nose scrunching as well when he reads something he apparently doesn’t like.
After only a few minutes of this-- a few minutes in which Kunikida does not get any work done himself, but if anyone were to call him out on it, he’d gladly blame it on the fact that Dazai append his keyboard with a full bottle of water not ten minutes earlier-- does Dazai get distracted. Something happens outside the window, supposedly, drawing Dazai’s attention to it. It’s like he’s been shocked, sitting upright and swiveling his head in a jerky little movement to peer out the window suspiciously. His ears are pointing upwards, listening, until he decides it’s nothing and turns his attention not to his work, but to where Ranpo’s cracking open a bag of chips.
“I’m hungry,” Dazai whines.
“Too damn bad,” Ranpo tells him, kicking his feet up onto his desk.
“I’m hungry, ” Dazai repeats, and to his horror, Kunikida finds that the statement is now directed at him.
“I took you out to lunch not even an hour ago.”
“But I’m hungry now.”
“Then you should have eaten when we were at lunch.”
Dazai makes a grumpy noise, his tail moving angrily behind him. “I’m being mistreated.”
“Poor thing,” Kunikida says half-heartedly, watching that tail move back and forth.
“Here.” Atsushi is standing over Dazai’s desk, holding out some of his own lunch-- a cute bento, courtesy of Kyouka. “You can have some of mine.”
Dazai makes a happy little noise, turning his grin on Atsushi. A spark of jealousy spikes through Kunikida. “Really?”
Setting the bento on the desk and reaching over to bring his own desk chair closer, Atsushi smiles back at him. His hand comes up to pet a stray lock of Dazai’s hair out of his face, fingers combing through unruly curls. Dazai lets out a happy little sound akin to a purr, and Kunikida’s stomach churns with jealousy again. He knows it’s unfounded, that Atsushi and Dazai are just close because they’re the only hybrids in the office, but it still makes him feel unsettled. Shaking his head, he stomps off to the storage room to dig out a new keyboard, if only to entice Dazai to come over and drench this one as well. As long as it means Dazai will pay him some mind, he’ll settle for the constant headache.
