Work Text:
Ango had been tossing and turning for over an hour, while Oda had been staring at the wall. Neither of them could sleep. It had been a long day of work for both of them, and despite their tiredness, they couldn’t sleep because of too many racing thoughts.
When it had been nearly two hours, Oda finally spoke, “I don’t think we’re going to fall asleep any time soon, want to get up and do something?”
“Yes, please. Can we go for a drive?” Ango wanted to get up, hoping it would make him more tired.
“Sure, I’ll go get the keys,” he rolled out of bed.
Oda decided to stay in his pajamas for the drive, while Ango grabbed a hoodie to pull over his pajamas. It was always a bit chilly in the car when they drove late at night. Walking over to the door, he pulled his shoes on, before stepping outside to join Oda who had just got into the car.
“Heh, you’re making me drive?” Ango laughed lightly, used to Oda getting him to drive.
“I prefer not driving at night, especially this late,” he was aware that he often got tired during their night drives, and had even fallen asleep before.
Turning the key in the ignition, the car started up, “I know, just teasing.”
Oda was glad Ango was just in a cheeky mood, “You’re such a fool sometimes, which is shocking compared to how serious you get over work.”
“Me, serious, never,” he sarcastically replied.
“More like every day, for most of the day,” the redhead joked in return.
Both of them chuckled at that, before Ango quipped back, “But you love that, and would probably have given in to the childish demands placed upon you had I not been serious. Plus, everything is more fun when I can fluster you easily.”
Oda blushed a bit as Ango reached a hand over to caress his cheek, “And Dazai always says I’m the one being romantic. If he saw you right now he would be over exaggeratedly gagging, and calling you a flirt.”
“Yeah, you’re right, Dazai would tell us to stop being so romantic because he’s there, and he’d dramatically cover his eyes,” he had seen it enough to know that Dazai would treat him the same way as Oda on this topic.
“It’s funny, he acts like we’re his parents sometimes. I wonder if he sees us as his parents, since I don’t think he has any, or at least any that want him,” Oda absentmindedly spoke aloud, wondering about the teen.
That caught Ango off guard, “I hadn’t really thought about that before. Although, you are right. We treat him like our son, and let him get away with way too much.”
Suddenly, the ex-assassin got a hilarious idea, “We should adopt him, then we could say that his treatment of us is deserved.”
“That’d be a lot of paperwork,” the spy was actually considering it, “but, if he wanted, we could.”
“Our very own problem child, who will likely drive us insane,” despite his words seeming like insults, the fond tone made it clear that it was all positive.
Ango chuckled slightly, before they finally fell into silence. They had exited the Yokohama a while ago, and were driving through an expanse of fields and trees. It was dark and quiet so far from the city, but it had been just what they needed.
Oda was looking out the car window, and watching the scenery pass. His eyelids felt heavier than they did earlier, and he was glad that his mind was finally quieting enough for sleep to come. Ango was not likely to fall asleep for a while, as he had to drive them back, and he still hadn’t turned around yet.
To the hum of the car, Oda fell asleep, and when the soft snores began to escape from him, Ango glanced over. A smile fell onto his face at the sight, and he wished he had his camera there to take a picture. There weren’t many moments where Oda looked so relaxed.
However, Ango knew he wouldn’t be able to get a picture. Even if he drove home to get his camera, when they pull into the driveway, Oda would wake up. So, he didn’t bother and kept driving down the road, not sure when he’d turn around.
These nights were ones Ango wished would never end, as he loves spending time with Oda until he falls asleep. This night would be one of many he treasured in his memories.
