Common destinyOriginally a Buddhist expression referring to all life being reborn on the same lotus, the phrase was later romanticized in double-suicide stories where two lovers wish to be reunited in paradise. The modern colloquial meaning, though, is to share the same fate through good or ill – e.g. "You and I are in the same boat, so if we're going down, we're going down together."
