Batfam and Higher Ed

Summary:

Education is important but has baggage. This is where I think the Batfam sits in their educational journeys.

Work Text:

Alfred: has a master's in Drama and Theater and Le Grand Diplôme (which he actually is more proud of than graduating Cambridge.) He also has his Basic Life Support for Healthcare and Public Safety (BLS) cert, while in the service he picked up Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, and German. He also has several blue ribbons for his pastries and crochet. Officially, he has the highest level of education in of those who live in Wayne Manor.

Bruce: has a bachelor's in accounting/business administration and pre-med. He did like 2 years of med school but let a summer vacation turn into traveling the world for ninja/weird skills. When he starts talking about school to the kids Alfred will clear his throat and give him a "look". Afterall, he can't provide a certificate in ninja from the League of Assassins, or escapology and stage magic from the Zataras.

Barbara: masters in compsci and library science. She is slowly working on her doctorate in computer and database forensics. Basically, she has an advisor and Bruce is paying Gotham U to let her do what she wants as long as it doesn't violate academic integrity. She has the most conventional education of the bunch.

Dick: officially, one year of college and then police academy. Well, ok, really, no. He has a bachelor's in criminology, social work, and accounting. He has so many languages that even the JLA has a joke that if you don't understand someone, call Nightwing. Bruce was never told about the three degrees, Dick just thought that he'd know, and Bruce was expecting a bill. Both are wrong. Commissioner Gordon knows and actually mentored Dick a bit, he's still trying to get Dick to get his master's in education or social work.

Cass: has a bachelor's in music and dance. She did most of her education via tutors and online and still takes online classes as she feels interested but is not actually going after a degree. She doesn't really understand why she should either, she has money, a good name, and a public reputation so she focuses more on being a good public heiress and a costumed badass.

Jason: has audited every literature class Gotham U offers. He has been told multiple times to just enroll by the professors. He won't. Certain professors use him as a TA and let him sit classes multiple times because he loves the atmosphere and there are rumors that he's the best tutor for English and Early American Lit. He only has a GED because Tim made it part of every fake identity he has. He doesn't match Dick for languages but his Spanish, Russian, and Japanese are as good as his English.

Tim: let's people think he dropped out, actually graduated early. Also has MBA from Gotham U via correspondence (using the power of money and his name). He could probably qualify and get more, but doesn't see the point. He actually only got the MBA to shove in the face of those who doubt him when he gets questioned about his choices as CEO. Of all the family, he is the most skeptical of the certification of education. While Bruce got rid of education requirements on jobs under a certain level with an application test, Tim pushed it across the entire organization and made testing or portfolio work required for all positions.

Duke: is still in high school but all in AP or other higher level classes. He has a few that are getting him credits at Gotham U and he has taken creative writing and poetry classes during the summer at Gotham County Community College. He can't wait to get to college and pursue a BA in poetry and literature. Jason has been introducing him to GU's literature department and taking him to poetry slams and rap battles.

Damian: is in high school only for the look, while he is excelling, he doesn't like any part of this experience. He has no interest in education beyond keeping his cover. He thinks he will have to at the very least get a bachelor degree in business or math. He is dreading this. He'd rather do a MA in visual arts or become a veterinarian, but he doesn't think that is what is required of him.
