Chapter Text
The breeze gently cradled Sunny’s face as he gently swung on the swings, alone. He didn’t think it was a bad thing. He just figured that most kids didn’t like him because he was different - or, in their words, “weird” or “creepy”. It wasn’t his fault that he didn’t speak very often. That was just how he was.
Sunny sighed. He didn’t mind being alone. It just got a bit boring not having anyone other than Mari to talk to.
Then, a sudden jolt caused his swing to jerk forward. He turned around, noticing that another boy had sat down next to him.
“How’s it going?” The boy asked, smiling widely.
Sunny was confused. Why wasn’t he scared?
“Good?” Sunny replied, unsure. “What’s your name?”
“Kel!” Kel replied. “Nice to meet ya!”
Sunny let a smile creep onto his face.
“That’s a nice name,” he replied. “My name’s Sunny.”
Kel got off the swings.
“Hey, come with me! I can show you around the mini forest!”
Kel stood tall in front of him, practically brimming with energy, a smile painted onto his face. Sunny stood up.
“Wait…” he asked. “Kel… are we… uh… friends?”
Kel raised an eyebrow.
“Why wouldn’t we be?” He asked. “We made introductions and everything! Plus, you seem pretty cool!”
Sunny blushed at the comment. He wasn’t used to compliments. Most people had other, unpleasant things to say to him. However, this Kel kid seemed… different. He seemed kind.
He wrapped his arms around Kel, trying not to alert him of the tears in his eyes. Kel was surprised at first, but quickly returned the hug.
After they both let go from the hug, Kel extended his hand.
“C’mon! Let’s go!”
Sunny swiftly took his hand, and let Kel lead him into the mini forest.
Sunny quickly learned just how interesting of a person Kel was. He knew basically everything that there was to know about the forest; from where the best place to build a fort was all the way to his favourite stick. It sounded strange, but Kel explained his ideas with such passion, that Sunny couldn’t help but admire the boy a little bit, feeling his face burn up every time he smiled.
Eventually, time caught up to the two of them, and it was time to go home.
“Sunny,” Kel began. “We live next door, right?”
Sunny nodded.
“Well…” Kel brought a hand up to his chin. “I think you should come around mine tomorrow. Do you wanna?”
Sunny’s eyes went wide, sparkling with amazement. He nodded.
“…yeah.” He replied.
After one final hug, Kel ran back to his house. Sunny, upon finding Mari, began walking home.
He thought back to how nice Kel was, smiling at the memory. He already missed the hugs they’d have. He couldn’t wait to meet him tomorrow.
