Felix pants, continuing to drag Toa forward, straining to peer behind them at the darkening horizon from under Toa's arm. He yelped as Toa stumbled, the goliath's weight falling into Felix and it took all the strength he had to keep them from toppling over.
Once he got them righted, he pulled Toa onwards towards the cave he could see on the cliff wall up a slight incline. “Easy, Toa. Easy, buddy. We’re almost there. Almost there, bud.”
He grunted as the goliath groaned, eyes rolling back before he fell to his knees, forcing the wizard to hunch, as Toa panted, head constantly dropping and jerking back up as he tried desperately to fight off passing out.
Felix swore, as he struggled and strained to try to push Toa back to standing, “Come on, Toa. Just a bit further, big guy, please. I can’t carry you. Come on, get up, please.”
Thunder boomed around them and Felix cringed, gaze flickering to the cave only 20 feet in front of them. He paused for only a second before renewing his pushing from underneath Toa’s shoulder, “Up, Toa. Please, please, please get up.”
The goliath let out a whine, eyes fluttering, fighting to stay open as he tried to look at Felix, before Toa shifted, more of his weight dropping onto Felix who squeaked in alarm as he was abruptly used as a crutch.
Toa got his far foot back under himself as he leaned on Felix before finally stumbling back into a stand, sweating heavily as Felix panted beside him, eyes wide before he let out a few even breaths, “Alright. Alright. I’ll forgive you for nearly crushing me this time. You did good. Very good. Come on, Toa.”
The two kept stumbling forward, Felix muttering praises and encouragement the whole way, his eyes trained on the cave entrance as he guided Toa there.
They were both trembling from exhaustion and panting for air by the time they made it in. Just in time too.
Only a moment after they entered, another crash of thunder rocked the air, followed by the crack of lightning, lighting up the sky and the thankfully empty cave – Felix could see the back, it was shallow, thank the Gods – before rain started to pour down in torrents.
He guided Toa to the far wall, helping – as much as he could- the goliath to sit and slump down against the wall before Felix himself plopped down in front of his friend. Nothing but their panting and the pouring of rain could be heard.
Toa shifted causing Felix to look up at him and finally push himself onto his knees to be able to reach Toa. “Alright, Toa. Let me see. I’ll try to patch you up as good as I can. Then we just got to hold out until the others find us, okay?”
Toa smiled weakly at him, removing his hand from the bloodied cloth he had been pressing to his chest.
Felix took out another cloth and his waterskin, wetting the cloth and pressing it to the one now plastered to Toa’s wound, trying to dampen it to be able to free it from the dried blood.
After a minute or so, he was able to peel it free with minimal pulling. He dabbed at the sluggishly bleeding wound with fresh cloth and looked up to Toa, who stared back through half lidded eyes, leaned against the wall.
Felix frowned, brow furrowed in concern before he went back to his task, pulling out some ointment, setting it to the side as he quickly soaked the rag in his hand, the bloodied one discarded, before washing Toa’s wound. He frowned as the bleeding picked up again and Toa hissed in pain.
“Sorry. Sorry.” He finished that and opened the ointment, scooping a handful and spreading it down the wound that stretched diagonally from Toa’s collarbone to the bottom of his ribcage. “Wow, Toa. That prick really got you. Luckily, it’s not deep, blade might’ve been sharp, but it was clean and he was weak.”
Felix paused for a moment before, "I'm gonna add some antidote just incase. I really don't..." He shook his head, pulling another container from his pack and slathering on another salve, pushing it into the wound this time, causing Toa to flinch and squawk, though he looked more awake now.
"Ow, Felix!"
Felix curled in on himself a bit, muttering, "Sorry." Before riffling in his bag to grab some bandages. He wrapped around Toa’s shoulder a few times to get the start of the wound, before starting across his chest, under his other arm and back over the other shoulder. He kept having to shift his position to be able to grab the other end of the bandage around Toa’s frame.
The goliath was grinning faintly at him now, watching as Felix practically danced around to get him bandaged. Felix scrunched his nose, before sticking his tongue out at Toa, only to return his focus to what he was doing.
He smoothed down a part of the bandage that had twisted before moving to wrap down Toa’s chest and torso. “I’m glad I invested the time into enlarging some bandages for you or this would’ve run out a while ago. Uh, you need any painkillers?”
“Nah, Felix. I’m alright. Just tired.”
Felix nodded, “It's just an after effect of that spell he hit you with. It’ll go away after some sleep.”
Thunder boomed outside, causing the human to jump and look before he took a breath and calmed. “Uh, no fire. Don’t have any wood… and I’ll be honest, I'm nervous to light one with you as you are right now. Don’t need to make it easier to find us.”
Toa nodded, “Alright, Felix.” He shifted to lay down with a groan.
Felix turned to look at him, brow furrowed, before yelping as a massive hand yanked him down, easily pulling him into a now bandaged chest. Felix flailed for a second before stilling. He squirmed to flip around to stare up at Toa, who had his eyes closed, breathing slowly. Felix kept staring and just as he knew it would, one sea green eye opened to look at him. He frowned and opened his mouth to speak only for Toa to remove his arm from under to his head, putting his finger to his lips to make a “Shhh” noise.
Felix froze, mouth slightly agape before, “Toa-“
“Shhh.”
“To-“
“Shhhshhhshhh.”
Felix frowned before he huffed and wiggled to get comfortable, “Fine.”
He paused before he flipped over again, ignoring Toa’s annoyed huff, and squinted at the cave entrance. A faint shimmering line etched itself into the ground across the opening, before fading away. Felix finally settled, scooching himself up to drop his head onto Toa’s bicep and closing his eyes.
The sound of rain falling soothed the two to sleep.
