We've Got Time

Summary:

A song inspired by faeeebaeee's piña coladas AMAU/SMAU, specifically twitter update 669/Ao3 ch. 114.

Notes:

This song was written in response to piña coladas twitter update 669/Ao3 ch. 114, which opens with Ed gently reassuring Stede - and Stede really beginning to internalize - that they have time and can take their relationship slowly, even as they reach new levels of intimacy and trust. After reading that scene, the song appeared in my mind nearly fully formed and would not let me rest until I wrote it down and recorded it. It's slow and patient, because, well, they've got time. The lyrics are from Stede's perspective, but are written in a reflective, lyrical voice that is not intended to replicate the in-story voice of the character. I hope this song resonates with other folks who love the coladas boys - and as always, many thanks to faeeebaeee for this beautiful story.

Work Text:

We've Got Time

Lyrics

Verse 1

A long time ago
you came through the wires with a spark and a game
oh, I was drawn to you before I knew your name
but back then I was young
I was hiding
you opened a door but I could not walk through its frame

Chorus

And you've aged like whiskey and I've aged like wine
we're no strangers to bitterness
but just like the silk that you kept we are fine
we're going to be fine
and we've got time

Verse 2

A long time ago
I told you in books what I dared not feel or say
in sugar and oranges and a whispered "stay"
but back then I was bound
I was trying
in an impossible choice I let you walk away

Chorus

And you've aged like whiskey and I've aged like wine
we're no strangers to bitterness
but just like the silk that you kept we are fine
we're going to be fine
and we've got time

Bridge

After more than twenty years
we've faced that pain and our fears
over ice skates and boat trips and pasta and wine
slow Sunday mornings with limbs intertwined
murals and camera flashes -
Moonbeam and Sunshine

Verse 3

And now here we are
you hold me so close to your body of ink
that tells how you survived though I left you to sink
and somehow you understand
you forgive me
you opened your arms and your doors - I walked through to you, singing

Chorus

Oh you've aged like whiskey and I've aged like wine
we're no strangers to bitterness
but just like the silk that you kept we'll be fine
we're going to be fine
and we've got time

Outro

Call us old-fashioned, but we'll take this slow
cause I think and I know
that we've got time

Production Notes

voice, cello, piano, songwriting and production (such as a small home studio with minimal gear allows) by Elia (@EdsHarpsichord on twt)

In case anyone listening wonders about the occasional little breaks in my voice - those are thanks to a paralyzed vocal chord! When I write songs for myself to sing, I usually try to write such that my vocal quirks won't be audible. But since this song is so intimate and vulnerable and about embracing the ways time has marked us, I let those moments of vocal fragility stand.
