In Those Tiny Hands You Hold My Heart

Summary:

“Louis?” Harry looked as confused as Ron felt, the other man pushing his glasses up with the back of his hand to not get them dirty.

“It’s Rosalie!” Louis yelled, desperation rolling off of him in waves, fighting to get free, trying to get to Harry. “She fell off her broom, and we can’t wake her up!”

~

The youngest Potter child has talked her parents into switching to a real broom, but did they make a mistake?

A Golden Trio Poly fic set in the "Golden Hearts" universe.

Work Text:

Ron was almost done gathering strawberries for the cake Harry was baking, when he heard a panicked voice from just outside the garden wall.

“Uncle Harry!”

Ron looked up, a small silhouette zooming towards their house on a broom, light blonde hair catching in the sunlight. Louis, Bill and Fleur’s youngest, jumped off his broom, nearly falling before he started running down the path towards their house.

“Hey, calm down Louis'' Ron stood up, the boy panicked in a way he had never seen before. “Is everything okay?”

“Uncle Harry!!” Louis yelled again, as loudly as he could. Ron ran over, strawberries forgotten as he put his arms around his brother’s kid.

“You’re starting to scare me mate-“

“Can you keep it down? What’s happening out here?” Ron looked up, Hermione’s head poking out on her office window. “I told you all that I’d be in mirror meetings until dinner, and-“

“I need Harry!”

Finally, Harry showed up, his husband coming out of the kitchen door, wearing an apron, his sleeves rolled up, a little bit of flour in his dark hair.

***

Harry had torn off his apron, shooting a spell over his shoulder to turn off the oven, Ron’s wand flying past him from the kitchen, Hermione barrelling down the stairs before Harry had even finished thinking. He grabbed their hands, leaving Louis behind in the garden, Hermione taking charge, pulling them with her, apparating them to the edge of the pitch.

Harry started running the second his feet touched the ground, knowing without looking that Ron and Hermione were right behind them, moving as one.

He could feel his heart in his throat, terror washing over him when he spotted the crowd of Arthur, Victorie, Roxanne and Lucy all looking lost and scared, holding their breath.

“Move!” Harry hadn’t meant to use his auror voice, but the children parted, letting them through, and there she was.

Rosalie was lying on the ground, almost looking like she was sleeping, but her arm was bent at a horrible angle. She was breathing, her chest moving, but Harry knew the image would haunt him.

Herbert was sitting beside her, not touching and making sure no one got near, their son taught well, taking charge of the situation like they had told him to, but as soon as he spotted them, he started crying.

“Mum! Dads!” Herbert hiccup, fat tears rolling down his cheeks. He got up, throwing himself at Hermione who caught him. “I only looked away for a second, I promise, I didn’t-“

Harry had already shot the first spell, the field magic pining back that Rosalie was alive, that her heart was beating, her lungs breathing, her brain functioning. She had simply been knocked out, her young body not handling the chock.

“We’re here, we’re here-“ Hermione held Herbert tight, letting the teenager hide his face in her hair. Their eyes meet, brown and green, Harry nodding as an answer to the question he knew Hermione didn’t dare ask, a visible sigh of relief washing over her at the knowledge that her daughter would be okay.

Rosalie had been allowed to go play with her broom as long as she brought a sibling, their youngest only just upgrading from the toy broom she had been complaining about for months. That’s what you got for giving into the demands of a 6 year old, Rosalie so headstrong Harry had no doubt she’d end up in Slytherin.

Ron was already working on the diagnosis spells, finding out exactly what took someone down one of the first things they had learned in the field, soft golden light covering Rosalie’s small body.

It was what they’d have done as aurors, the two of them clicking into place, the professional partnership that had been drilled into them activating instantly.

“What happened?” Harry looked around, trying to keep the anger and panic out of his voice - scaring the kids even more not the way to go. He had to know what had gone down to plan the next step, collecting the pieces to complete the puzzle.

“She tried to loop, probably wanted to impress-“ Victorie stepped towards, her white blonde hair in a high ponytail, Bill and Fleur's oldest always ready to go to the pitch with her siblings and cousins even if it meant playing Quidditch with kids way younger than her. “Arthur yelled not to, that she was up too high, but she was already…”

“She lost grip on her broom,” Arthur was standing with Louis who had returned, Sirius and Lily right behind them, the twins holding each other, looking horrified.

Arthur’s brown eyes were filled with guilt, Rosalie begging her brother during breakfast to please come play so they could do teams. Sirius and Lily had been lost causes, and while Herbert had agreed to supervise, they all knew how much he disliked flying.

“How did she land?”

“I think she landed on her side,” Little Lucy was only a year older than Rosalie, Percy and Audreys accidental second as girly as her cousin, her and Rosalie often inseparable at family gatherings.

“I need everyone to go home to their parents-“

“No.” Roxanne shook her head, her red afro bouncing. “No, we’re staying.”

“Victorie-“ Hermione took a step forward, untangling herself from their son, Herbert biting his lip like he always did when he knew he had to be brave.

“I’ll help Mrs Granger.” They started moving the kids, some of them protesting while others went quietly, Harry quickly registering the quiet ones. It had taken him years of therapy to recognise, but keeping it in was rarely a solution. He’d have to make some social calls once this was over, once the shock of what had happened had had time to manifest.

“Harry-“

Harry zoomed in on Ron, who had finished the spells. He trusted Hermione with his life, knew his wife could handle the crowd of kids, so Harry got on his knees, sitting on the opposite side of Rosalie’s body.

“Diagnosis?”

“Obviously arm,” Ron gestured, trying to keep his voice even, refusing to let Harry carry the weight of his worry as well, “We might have a concussion, but I don’t think she fell on her chest or her head, her arm taking the hit.”

“Let me.” Harry turned his wand, murmuring to himself as he scanned Rosalie’s body, Ron so deeply grateful for Harry’s training as a healer as the complex spells covered their daughter.

Having had the diagnosis spells to focus on, Ron had been able to keep a level head, but now, he could feel the panic set in. They never should have let Rosalie bully them into switching to an adult broom, but she had wanted it so badly, had begged and pleaded and pressed their buttons, their youngest knowing exactly how to bend her parents to her will.

Ron watched the swirls of Harry’s magic, recognising a little of what he was doing, reaching out and gently taking their little girl's hand.

“Got it.” Harry opened his eyes, looking at him, his green eyes telling Ron that his assessment had been correct. “I’ll wake her, but she’s probably going to be scared.”

“Right.” Ron bit his lip, moving to lift Rosalie’s head, putting it in his lap. He knew how disorientating it was to wake up after an injury, Hermione thankfully almost finished herding the kids out of the pitch.

“Ready?” Harry lifted his wand, pointing it at their daughter’s head.

“Ready.”

“Evernate.”

“Dad?” Harry had to swallow, hard, Rosalie trying to look at him, her green eyes swimming. “What-“

“You fell off your broom love.” Ron’s voice was gentle, managing a compassion Harry knew he couldn’t deliver right now without breaking apart.

“You passed out from the pain of the fall.” He never should have allowed her to go without adult supervision, Rosalie always pushing herself to the limit and beyond. “The impact broke your arm, wrong way I’m afraid?”

“Oh?” Rosalie was quiet for a second, “Is there a right way?”

“She’s definitely concussed.” Ron moved his hands to her shoulders, looking like he was just comforting her, but Harry knew he was getting ready to hold her down in case she started thrashing. A broken arm was nothing, a spell he knew how to perform to perfection fixing it in seconds.

An injured brain was an entirely different story, and he needed to be extremely carefull.

“Con what?”

“Rosie, you have to lie very still, okay?” Harry put a hand on her hip. “This is going to be unpleasant.”

“I want mum.” Rosalie was on the verge of crying, tears gathering in her eyes, her body catching up to what had happened. “Where’s mum?”

“I’m right here sweetheart.” Hermione knelt down, grabbing Rosalie’s wrist and squeezing it. “Do as dad says.”

Harry took a deep breath, raising his wand again and pointing it at his child, starting the series of spells.

“But it isn’t fair!” Rosalie yelled. Harry had patched her up, leaving the blooming bruise on her shoulder as a reminder of what she had done. Molly had come by to check and clear her for action, the Weasley children all suffering their fair share of injuries, Harry’s shoulders visibly sagging when Molly said Rosalie was okay.

“Consider yourself lucky you haven’t been grounded for the rest of the summer!” Rosalie wasn’t to leave the house or garden for the next week, her siblings all told that they wouldn’t even dream of smuggling her out if they valued their lives.

“I hate you!” Rosalie slammed the door to her room, and Hermione sighed.

She didn’t discipline their children often, but what Rosalie had done was not only unsafe and stupid - it was directly against the deal she had made with them.

Harry and Ron had allowed her to switch to a real broom if she behaved responsibly, and wanting to show off in front of her older cousins was anything but responsible.

It seemed like she was doomed to never truly be free from Quidditch, Rosalie displaying all of the worst traits of her fathers when it came to the sport they all loved.

“The fact that you’re sulking doesn’t change your punishment.”

Hermione waited, just to be sure Rosalie wasn’t gunning for another round, before placing a tattletale spell on the door so she’d know if their youngest left her room. None of their kids had ever tried or even threatened to run away, but if one of them actually attempted it, it’d be Rosalie.

“I hope you’ll come down for dinner darling.” She sighed. “We love you.”

Hermione walked away, hating that the fight was unfinished, but also that it wouldn’t do to continue pushing, Ron teaching her that particular lesson.

She fiddled with her wedding ring, twisting it giving her something to do.

“How did it go?”

Hermione stopped, turning to look into Harry’s study, her husband sitting on the couch, a glass of fire whiskey in his hand.

“As one could expect…” She stepped into the room, closing the door behind her.  “How are-“

“What if something had happened? What if-“ Harry cut himself off, squeezing his eyes shut, agony on his face. “I was so scared.”

“I know.” Hermione rushed over, so thankful when Harry made space for her to step between his legs, her arms around his head as he pressed his face to her stomach. “I know.”

A quiet sob left him, his hands coming up, wounding around her waist, letting her hold him.

“You’re okay.” Hermione carefully caressed his hair, running her fingers through it, knowing that Harry would need to sleep in the middle of the bed that night and that both her and Ron would be more than willing to give it to him. “We’re all okay, I promise.”
