everything and nothing is as it seems to be

Summary:

Yor thought she knew Loid Forger.

The first time she realized that he wasn’t who he appeared to be was when he revealed himself to be a SSS officer, catching her red handed after she was finishing up a job.

A gentlemanly and charming act that became twisted. An innocent smile tainted by blood and subtle taunts. Gestures of kindness and concern that no matter how much they made Yor’s heart waver, she knew were not all that pure.

It wasn’t this that made Yor completely unsure of Loid, however. It wasn’t any of that.

Notes:

this is pretty short but regardless I've been wanting to post my own sss loid fic so here you go! (this totally isn't because this went over the text limit in discord)

Work Text:

Yor thought she knew Loid Forger.

The first time she realized that he wasn’t who he appeared to be was when he revealed himself to be a SSS officer, suddenly appearing when she was in the middle of cleaning up after a job.

When Yor truly realizes that she knows nothing about Loid, it’s when she meets his daughter Anya.

It was just a small visit to his apartment. He wanted to pick something up before their date (which Yor reluctantly agreed to) and asked if they could make a stop at his place.

She said yes of course. And plus, she wanted to see where he lived. It was only fair, she thought, since he already knew where she lived. Though Loid recommended that she wait outside, she insisted to join him. Besides, he mentioned how he wanted to spend more time with her.

(He smiled quite a bit when she told him that.)

Yor didn’t know what to expect when Loid opened his apartment door. But she never would’ve thought that a child would be leaping into his arms the second he opened the door.

Before that moment, Loid never mentioned having a child. At first Yor thought that his daughter just never came up in their conversations, but she quickly dismissed the idea upon realizing that a child so young wouldn’t necessarily fit into the topic of their jobs. (Not to mention what mind games Loid would do and say, too.)

Regardless, Yor remembers the happy squeal that the girl made when Loid hugged her and held her up. How he smiled so warmly at his daughter, with eyes that showed a softness that she didn’t even think was possible.

This man, the one that held Yuri’s career in his hands and cornered her into where she was now, could behave like this? Like a father?

No. No, it had to be an act, she thought. Just like before, he’d show his true colors.

But he didn’t. Not once did that mask, a mask that Yor thought existed on his face, disappear to be replaced with something darker.

He smiled when he waved goodbye to her, saying that he'll be home soon to see her and her babysitter. A genuine smile. One without any subtleties or tricks, one that meant nothing but a fondness for his daughter. Even when they left to continue their date, Yor could see how his expression still retained a degree of softness.

Maybe Loid really was just putting on an act. Maybe this was only something to gain Yor's sympathies or to manipulate her into believing that Loid wasn't that removed from people.

Or maybe he was a genuine father who just simply loved his daughter like any other parent would.

She doesn't know what to think. And neither does her heart.
