Harvey never could sleep very much. He used to be able to, years ago when he was still the District Attorney of Gotham City. Usually it was a good thing though: he always had warning if someone tried to attack him. Tonight though, it was more of a hindrance.
“Please, Harvey. You’re the only person in this place that would understand why I have to do this.”
Harvey frowned, his eyes trailing over to the covered form in Ivy’s bed. He wondered how long her farce would last. Hell, Crane’s had only lasted a week when he left a dummy in his place. He looked back to Ivy, her green eyes vibrant even in the dim Arkham lights.
“Please, Harvey – she’ll wake up any minute now. I need you to convince the others.”
Harvey clenched his coin, “You know we’ll have to flip for it first.”
She nodded, “That’s better odds than most.”
He flipped, the silver glinting in the light before landing. His eyes locked with hers before he glanced down and sighed.
“So will you do it?”
He nodded reluctantly. “I still don’t understand why it has to be me. Wouldn’t Joker or Harley would be a better option?”
Ivy shook her head, “Joker would never want me to leave, he’s always had problems understanding why any of us would want to leave this life. And Harley…” Ivy glanced away momentarily, leaning a hand on the thick glass that separated them. “She’d take it the worst, Harvey. You know she would. That girl’s always been a bit too fragile.”
Harvey nodded. He hated that she was doing this. On one hand he felt disgusted by her even wanting to leave, and on the other he felt a bit of jealousy. All Ivy had to do was decide to lead a normal life and have an escape plan. It would never be that easy for him. But a promise was a promise, “They won’t ever suspect you’re missing. Not on our watch.”
She smiled, genuinely for once, and Harvey felt that rush of embarrassment he’d once gotten when his face had been pretty enough to garner such smiles from women. Then there was a shuffling from the bed as the form moved, and Ivy gasped. “Thank you, Harvey. I mean it.” She blew a kiss in his direction and then headed off down the hall. She’d find a way out, he had no worries about that.
The thing in the bed sat up, rubbing its eyes as if awakening from a long sleep. Harvey’s jaw dropped. It was almost a perfect replica – from her hair to her face, even her body was…
“You liking what you see, Harvey?” The fake Ivy smiled, winking.
He shook his head. Well, it didn’t have Ivy’s class. Joker would probably suspect, but if Harvey vouched for it then he’d leave it alone. And Harvey never broke a promise, especially not to a good friend.
