Work Text:

Today was an important day for both Emu and Nene. July 5th, which marks six months since Nene revealed her feelings to Emu, who reciprocated them happily. Nene has had something special planned for the occasion for a while now. She wanted to take Emu somewhere she absolutely loved: the beach. She loved the sound of the water’s waves crashing against the shore, the soft feeling of the sand against her feet as she walked along it, and the soothing smell of the beach air. All of these things were so relaxing to her, and they made beach days very enjoyable. Now that it was well into summer, today was the perfect opportunity to spend the day at the beach with her girlfriend. She sent a quick message to her to confirm that this plan would work.

hey love. happy six months! <3 let’s go to the beach together to celebrate :)

Emu woke up bright and early, fully aware of the importance of today. Not long after waking up, she received a message from Nene, who she had thought of immediately after waking up this morning. Upon reading the message, she grew more and more eager for the day, just wanting it to begin already. She gifted Nene with an immediate reply.

HI MY LOVE!!! HAPPY SIX MONTHS!!!! YES YES YES!!! :D LET’S GO RIGHT NOW!!!!

After softly laughing at how instant and enthusiastic Emu’s response was, Nene gave Emu the time she would be ready to meet up, 12:00 sharp, then put her phone down and quickly got ready to spend the day at the beach. After completing her typical morning routine, she packed a bag with some of the two’s favorite snacks, a large sheet to lay everything on, a towel, and some water for the two of them. For an outfit, she wore a light, flowy, beige sundress over her swimsuit, because knowing Emu, she’ll definitely want to spend some time in the water. After double checking and triple checking that she had everything she needed, she swiftly left the house and started her route to Emu’s house so the two could go to the beach together.

Before the two knew it, 12:00 had arrived and Nene was at Emu’s doorstep. She left a few gentle knocks on the door in a rhythm that only they understood.

After getting ready the fastest she’s ever gotten ready, Emu eagerly waited downstairs for the clock to strike 12. Almost exactly as her phone’s clock read “12:00,” she heard a knock at her door in a familiar rhythm. It could be none other than…

“Nene-chan!”
Emu opened the door for the songstress before hugging her excitedly, nearly sending the two to the floor. Luckily, Nene was able to maintain her balance so neither of the two fell.
“Wah—! Careful, Emu!”
Although Nene sounded demanding at first, she couldn’t help softly giggling soon after.
“Today’s gonna be so so SO fun with you! I’m super duper excited! When you texted me this morning, I went “YIPPEE!” and ZOOM ZOOM ZOOMED to get ready right away!”
Emu continued to ramble, leaving Nene no room to reply. Despite this, Nene seemed to be listening intently as Emu rambled on and on about her excitement for their beach day. Finally, as Emu finished up her ramble, Nene spoke up.
“Do you have everything you need? I’m bringing a lot of stuff with me just in case. I even have some of your favorite snacks.”
Emu gasped dramatically at this.
“You do?! Oh, Nene-chan! You’re so kind! I'm aaaaaaaaall ready to go!”
Nene smiled softly, extending a hand out for Emu to grab as the two left her house.

Soon enough, the two arrived at the beach, which they had to take the train to get to. Hand in hand, the two walked along the sand in order to find a good spot to keep their belongings, though Emu eventually let go so she could really be thorough with her search. This left Nene standing along the shore alone. The gentle beach breeze appeared to have Nene in a trance. Her eyes were gently closed with a soft smile on her face as she took in her surroundings. It was already clear how much she loved the beach.

Meanwhile, Emu was scouting for the perfect spot to keep everything while the two enjoyed themselves for the day.
“Nene-chan! I found a super duper perfect spot to keep everything! How does this look?”
Emu called out, which appeared to snap Nene out of her trance. She quickly opened her eyes and turned her head to follow the direction of Emu’s voice. “Huh?”
The spot Emu chose was indeed a fairly adequate spot now that Nene was paying more attention to that.
“That’s a really nice spot, actually. Let’s keep everything there.”
She walked over to where Emu, who was now celebrating her success at finding an acceptable spot, was standing. She put her bag down and took out the large sheet she was keeping in it.
“Here, I'll need some help laying this out. We can keep everything on this.”
Nene said as she handed Emu half of the sheet.

The two were soon able to successfully get the sheet onto the sand, placing Nene’s bag on top of it afterwards so there would be weight to keep the sheet on the ground. There was a light breeze after all, so it was better to be safe than sorry.
“We can worry about unpacking everything in there for when we really need it.”
Said the taller of the two.
“Yaaaaaay! Can we go in the water right now, Nene-chan? Pretty pretty please with a grapefruit on top?”
Emu beamed excitedly, practically shaking in place with excitement, to which Nene replied by quietly snickering into her hand.
“I knew that’s what you’d wanna do first. I don't see why not.”

Almost instantly after, the two removed what they had layered over their swimsuits, meaning they were ready to enter the water. Unlike Emu, Nene was hesitant. When going to the beach, Nene was usually the type to stay out of the water and instead enjoy the feeling of the gentle breeze blowing through her hair and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. Meanwhile, Emu was always the type to want to go straight into the water and have some fun. Of course, Nene was more focused on letting Emu have the time of her life, so she didn’t want to protest.
“C’mon, Nene-chan! What are you waiting for?!”
Nene was quickly snapped out of her hesitation when she felt Emu grab her hand and run toward the water.
“E-Emu! Hold on! Don’t you think the water’s gonna be c—AH!”

The water was, in fact, cold. At least to Nene it was, which was apparent by her yelp. Emu didn’t seem to be very bothered by it as she had already made her and Nene end up practically hips deep into the water. She was excitedly giggling, making it clear that she was already enjoying herself quite a bit. Nene, meanwhile, stood with her arms crossed, subtly shivering in place.
“C’mon, hon! You’re not gonna warm up unless you move around like I am!” Emu called out, now deeper in the sea.
“Okay, okay. I'm coming…” Nene replied before slowly inching toward Emu, trying her best to get used to the temperature.

Soon enough, she was close enough to the other. She had a little smirk on her face. Emu noticed this almost instantly. Her expression grew confused.
“Hm? What’s that look for, Nene-chan?”
Not saying a word in response, Nene splashed Emu with some of the water. To this, Emu gasped.
“Nene-chan! That’s just mean! You really are a diva!”
She pouted playfully. Despite how much she wanted to stay serious, she started laughing soon after as she splashed Nene with even more water.
“AH!” Nene yelled out. “Y-You know how cold I am!”
Despite her tone, she was actually having a lot of fun. She splashed Emu again, this time with more energy than her first attempt. Now, the two were both splashing each other through shared laughter, seeing who could create the biggest splash. To neither of their surprises, Emu won by far.

After a long while of the two having fun in the water together, they were starting to grow a little hungry, and the sun was just barely beginning to get tired of sitting in the sky. Emu and Nene agreed to get out of the water so they could eat something. Nene packed enough food for them to have a meal along with some snacks. Though they were very simple meals, they were filling enough to work. Nene took the time after she finished her food as an opportunity to truly take in the relaxing atmosphere of the beach while she dried off and warmed up. By just seeing her expression alone, it was easy for Emu to tell how happy Nene was at that moment.
“Nene-chan’s having soooo much fun! Her smile is so beautiful! My heart’s baboom babooming just looking at her!”
She thought to herself as she silently admired her girlfriend.

Although she was enjoying the beautiful view that was the songstress sitting in front of her, the dreamer decided to move so the two were sitting alongside each other. She was starting to realize how quickly the day was coming to an end, and she wanted no part in it. Sunsets like these usually made her feel somewhat bittersweet because of how they symbolize the end of another “day full of wonderhoy.” With all this in mind, Emu sighed as a slight frown formed on her face. She kept her eyes glued to the sky, which was beginning to fade into an orange hue. Upon hearing Emu sighing next to her, Nene was once again snapped out of her overly relaxed state as she looked over at the dreamer, who appeared gloomier than usual.
“Hm? Is everything alright, sunshine?”
“Mhm! Everything’s A-okay!”
Emu offered a sad smile in response, though this faded rather quickly as she broke eye contact.
“But… I just don’t want today to end. And now, it’ll be over before we know it! I just wish everyday could last forever and ever, but especially today! That would make my heart baboom baboom baboom with joy!”
This made perfect sense to Nene. She knew Emu didn’t like sunsets. She gathered the right words to respond with and then spoke up.

“...Today was really fun. It’s sad that it has to end so soon, but… do we really have to end it like this?”
Emu’s curiosity was sparked, so she turned her head to look back at Nene.
“Nene-chan…? What do you mean?”

Nene took this as her opportunity. She laid one of her hands on top of Emu’s and slowly moved a little closer to her.
“U-um… I'm not sure if this’ll help you feel any better, but…”
She closed her eyes and inched even closer to Emu. They were mere centimeters apart at this point. Emu caught on rather quickly with what was going on, so she followed what Nene did and closed her eyes. It was then that the small gap between the two was closed as they shared a kiss. Eventually, Nene pulled away, looking at Emu, who was incredibly flustered, judging by the bright pink tint of her cheeks.
“...Um… Did that help at all? Or…?” Nene sheepishly asked, to which Emu appeared to be too zoned out to even acknowledge that Nene had said anything.
“Emu…?”
Nene waved one of her hands in front of Emu’s face as a way to make her reenter reality.
“Wah—! Nene-chan!”
Emu’s cheeks were much rosier than usual as she avoided eye contact with Nene, afraid that her face would reach record breaking temperatures if she dared to make eye contact.
Nene found Emu’s reaction to be quite cute, but she didn’t let that distract her from her initial intentions.
“Um… Do you feel a little better now? Or was that too sudden? Sorry…”
“Nene-chan…”
She took a moment to regain composure, then finally made eye contact with her girlfriend once again.
“I feel much much better now! Can we do that again? Pretty please?”
She smiled brightly, despite seeming sad just a few moments ago. Nene laughed softly in response to this.
“A-Again? Um… I guess I don’t see why not.” She responded as her face warmed.
Now that the two were both prepared and anticipating a shared kiss between them, Emu rested a hand on Nene’s cheek just before they kissed much more comfortably and confidently than the last time. Eventually, they pulled away, both blushing quite a bit, yet smiling fondly at each other at the same time.

Nene was right. Emu couldn’t think of a better way to end off such an amazing day than this. Maybe nighttime isn’t so bad when you spend it with someone you love.
