Chapter 1: Reoccurring Nightmare

Summary:

Rex keeps having this nightmare where he kills Anakin.

Chapter Text

He woke up, gasping for air.

He had a dream, a very bad dream. The right side of his head was pulsing with pain as he slowly got up and tried to calm down his rapid breathing.
It wasn’t the first time Rex woke up like that and it surely wasn’t the last. He was covered in sweat, clothes sticking to his skin. The clone closed his eyes, trying to ease the painful headache and calm down, but the imagine was burned into his mind.

He was having a reoccurring nightmare where he killed his Jedi.

It was getting worse the further into the war they got.
Every time Rex closed his eyes he saw Anakin laying on the ground with unseeing eyes and a puddle of blood forming around him. Sometimes he could see tears streaming down his lover’s face and his own hands, covered in Skywalker’s blood.
Rex felt a cold shiver run down his spine and quickly turned around, afraid of what he might see. His hands were trembling, his eyes slowly got used to the darkness and he could finally look around the room.
Anakin was laying next to him, pale like a sheet and with dark circles under his eyes.
The clone slowly reached out and placed his trembling hand on the man’s chest, holding his breath. Tears started to form in the corners of his eyes as Rex waited, his lips trembling – it was getting harder and harder to hold back his tears.

There was dead silence, and then a heartbeat.

Anakin’s heart was beating.

Rex sighed in relief and focused on his Jedi’s heart. His own heartbeat slowed down, synchronizing with Skywalker’s pulse. The clone wiped the sweat and tears from his face before laying down on the bed, covering himself with a blanket.
For a moment he just lied there, staring at the ceiling, too scared to fall asleep again. Every few minutes he kept looking over at Anakin, making sure that he’s still there, and then going back to staring blankly at the the ceiling.
His thoughts came to a halt when he heard Anakin’s breath hitch and could feel the man next to him shift position. Skywalker snuggled closer to the clone, his brows furrowed. He extended his arm and grabbed Rex’s shirt, not even opening his eyes. Only when he felt his lover’s chest under the palm of his hand did he finally calm down. His breathing once again became deep and slow, his hand never letting go of Rex’s shirt.
The clone froze, surprised but also scared. Slowly, he lifted up his arms and gently embraced his Jedi like he was made from glass. He sensed Anakin relax in his arms, which made him less afraid. Rex tightened his grip a little bit, pulling the Jedi closer and snuggling him, breathing in his scent. His eyelids started to feel heavy and after a couple of minutes he fell asleep, with the love of his life in his arms.

He didn’t have anymore nightmares that night.
