Work Text:
“Superman?”, Lex questioned as he slid the glass doors that connected his living room to the terrace. “What are you doing here?”
“Just thinking about stuff.”, Clark replied. He swung his legs off the ledge of the building as he stared at the night sky.
“Okay.”, Lex said. He went back inside to grabbed two beers and sat right beside the Kryptonian. Clark got handed a beer which he politely accepted despite the fact it wasn’t enough to get him any degree of drunk. There was silence for a while before Lex decided to make some small talk.
“How’s Kara doing!”
“She’s doing fine. You know she’s adjusting well into her hero role in the Young Justice League. We train together so it’s a plus. Right now, she having a sleepover with her other teammates this weekend.”
“Oh that’s good. She’s fitting in with the team.”
“Do you remember when we first met?”, Clark non-sequiturly asked. The change in topics was unexpected and had caught Lex off guard.
“Wasn’t that a few years ago when you tried to destroy part of the city for some reason?
“No, well, Yes for meeting ’Superman’.”, Clark took a deep breath in and out. He held his hand together in his lap and his foot began to move rapidly. Lex knew that whatever he was going to say next, was going to be something that had important implications. “But that’s not what I’m talking about. That wasn’t the first time we talked before. Or met for that matter.”
“We were kids when we first saw each other.”
Lex shot him a look of disbelief. “I think I would remember if we met as kids. I would especially recognize you now as an adult.
“Oh please. You wouldn’t recognize me now if I was in my civilian outfit and standing right in front of you.”
“You sure about that?”
“I know about that. You know how?”
”How?”
Clark climbed in front of him, close enough to physically touch him if he wanted to. He leaned forward to whispered in his ear. Lex bravely raised his slightly gripped his suit. The Kryptonian didn’t object to that at all.
“Because I’ve done it before you know. I’ve stood right in front of you, dressed up like a regular person, and you had no idea who I was. We even had long conversations together in my civilian outfit and you didn’t recognize my voice.” Clark’s lips grazed his ear. Lex’s face remained the same but his grip tightened. “Funny part is that we keep in touch for work purposes and interact on a weekly basis and I don’t even really try to hide my secret identity anymore.
Lex looked at him unimpressed but he was running a little hot. “I doubt that but I guess i’ll take your word for it.”
Clark laughed at his comment but quickly turned serious.
“But do you seriously not remember anything involving me from before?”
Lex shook his head, “Not that far back.”
“What about that lab in Kansas?”
“What lab?”
“The one running those tests on people. You were there. I know you were.”
“I don’t remember any of that and that’s impossible. I have never been to Kansas before. Surprisingly.”
The Kryptonian cursed and got off of him. “Of course he took your memories away from both me and that place. That bastard.”
“What?!”
“Well, It was probably for the best then.”, Clark said as he began to get up to leave. “You wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t.”
“No, wait what do you mean my memories were taken?”
“If you don’t remember lab then there’s isn’t much point in me explaining.”
“So what is the point of this?”, Lex asked furiously. If his memories were tampered with and he had a connection with Kal, then he wanted to know. Especially if it invoked human experiments. “You come to my home, tell me something, then not explain? What’s with that? Give me something before you leave off again.”
Clark shrugged. Maybe he’ll finish telling him the whole truth. But tonight wasn’t the night. “You told me once that our friendship would be the stuff of legends. I’m happy something good came out of that hell hole.”
Then he flew away, leaving a bewildered Lex in the dust.
