Work Text:
Zelda Donovan pushes the curtains of Gorgug Thistlespring’s bedroom open.
She can’t find any of her things in his bedroom. Or, rather, his guest room at Mordred Manor. It’s big enough to give him one, so he has his own space. He’s still asleep, his arms wrapped tight around her waist as she squirms to sit up and see where her things are. She sees her backpack, her phone (plugged in, which she doesn’t remember doing), and the sweatshirt she’d worn over before Gorgug’s sweatshirt became her new pajamas.
He sleepily grunts and pulls her back in for cuddles. He’s bigger than her, she’s five feet tall and he’s around six foot four, and he’s strong. He plays football with Fabian, and sometimes Zelda wonders why he’s even with her at all. They’re so opposite. His drum set in the corner reminds her. Right.
Music. He fell in love with her over music . Mandatory music class in Aguefort was absolutely painful, but he made it better for her, she supposed. Learning music was something they bonded over, two non-musically inclined students sharing a love for metal and most of all, trying to fit into a place where they didn’t seem to belong. He’d told her about the Thistlesprings, about being adopted and knowing he wasn’t their biological kid from a young age, wanting to know who his biological parents were and mourning the loss of a part of him he never got to know. Zelda told him about how she felt as if she didn’t belong in her family, emotionally, different than her parents and her much older siblings.
“Why are you up?” He grumbles into her head. “It’s a Saturday.” It pulls her from her thoughts, grounding her back into the moment. She’s in his bedroom, in his bed, cuddled into him. He presses a kiss to her head, then her cheek, then back up to her head.
“Dunno, sorry,” She murmurs, settling back down into his arms. “Just used to getting up for school.” He runs his fingers through her short black hair.
“Sleep, it’s fine,” Gorgug says. “No school today, right? Let’s just…relax for a bit.” His eyes flutter closed and he relaxes.
Zelda doesn’t go back to sleep, but she lets her boyfriend use her as a teddy bear until he finally decides it’s time to roll out of bed. His hair is messy and he’s wearing his “MY CHILD WAS AGUEFORT’S ATHLETE OF THE MONTH” shirt and sweatpants. Zelda rolls out of bed and looks in her bag for a shirt and pants. Gorgug comes back from the bathroom to find her dressed for the day in a grey shirt with black ripped jeans. She’s lying on his bed, one earbud in.
“You look nice,” He kisses her on the forehead when he comes back. “Do you want to go get breakfast? Like, out?”
“Whatever you want to do,” Zelda’s not picky, she doesn’t mind going but she also doesn’t mind staying. He nods and takes her hand, leading her down the stairs of Mordred Manor.
It smells like toast and coffee in the kitchen. Sandra Lynn Faeth has been up, and she’s made herself breakfast and coffee, and Adaine is there as well. Zelda gives them both a small wave, and Gorgug grabs the van keys from the little key holder labeled with everyone who has a vehicle’s name.
“Zelda and I are going out,” He says to Sandra Lynn and Adaine, “Do you guys need anything?”
“I think we’re okay, but thanks,” Sandra Lynn’s smile is soft, in a mom way. “Have a good breakfast.”
Gorgug drives the van down the road and Zelda studies him. The morning sun makes him look radiant, almost like it was made just for him, but she’ll never say that out loud because that’s embarrassing for her to admit. She’s still figuring out the whole ‘expressing your lovey feelings without feeling embarrassed to admit something’ thing, but Gorgug is good, he’s so patient and kind, and he works through it with her too.
They’re both awkward and working through so much, and somehow, they fit together perfectly, like two puzzle pieces in a larger puzzle combining together, clicking perfectly together. She puts her hand on his resting on the console. He glances over at her.
“You alright?” He asks, and she nods.
“Yeah, I am,” Zelda says and listens to the soft music pouring from the radio.
When they park, he gives her a chaste kiss and Zelda can’t help how her face flames red. She’s really in love with him.
