Pearl knew from the moment she saw him that he wasn't the real Grian. She saw it in his strange purple eyes and cold-to-the-touch skin. She knew he was something else, of a higher power, and that her Grian was long gone, decaying into code somewhere.

ohhhh my goddd i adoooreeee clone/replacement plots. theyre so fucking interesting.
beyond that, i am so giddy about how this didnt shy away from the fact that yes, grian is a monster, he is (or will grow up to be) an watcher. he is not the friend all the others lost and he cannot ever be that for them or for himself. it wouldn't be true to say he's changed, because he has always been this. always had a mind that did not understand the human mind or soul beyond the memories he has of a person who died so he could live. and he is very much aware of it. and despite the affect or his intent, grian wants to be good. not really because he thinks its important, its becasue he still loves his friends. despite the steep gap between their view of life and what it really means to exist, he still loves for his friends. it might not translate to others and it might not be entierly good because he himself isnt good, never will be, but it is him, a creature not made to care, loving despite it. its a fight with ones nature. of refusing your "purpose" because cruelness is always a choice, sometimes it is an impossible forced or desperate choice, but it is a choice nonetheless. and even the monsters created out of said cruelness have to choose.
