Work Text:
Usually, when San would get a text from Wooyoung that said ‘brokeback mountain’, San knew he had to stop at the ice cream shop near Wooyoung’s apartment, and arrive wearing his oversized gray hoodie. He knew Wooyoung liked to wear it especially after a bad day — something about making himself feel small that brings him comfort. It was a flawless system that always brought his best friend comfort.
The words brokeback mountain were a code they came up with after the first two times Wooyoung got dumped by the guys he found on dating apps.
They were watching Brokeback Mountain for a reason that San cannot recall, sharing some cookie dough ice cream together on Wooyoung’s couch. Wooyoung was a mess. The perfectly applied eyeliner he had when he knocked on his door, 3 hours earlier, was not so flawless anymore, now completely smudged and ruined by Wooyoung’s tears.
He wasn't even aware that Brokeback mountain was this sad! If he knew, he would have forced them to watch legally blonde instead, or something.
In a desperate attempt to make his best friend laugh, San joked with him. “Hey, I'll tell you what. Next time you will need the special post breakup San treatment, just text me ‘brokeback mountain’, and I'll be at your doorstep in no time with ice cream and hugs.”
San didn't think too much of it, he just needed to hear his own best friend laugh.
So a few weeks later, when San got a text that said ‘brokeback mountain’ from Wooyoung, he thought Wooyoung was joking. Instead of ignoring the text, San thought it would be funny to arrive at Wooyoung’s doorstep with actual ice cream, to show him that he didn't forget about his own stupid joke. To his surprise, Wooyoung was not laughing when he opened the door. His best friend looked heartbroken, hair’s a total mess and on the verge of tears.
And that’s how it officially started. Unfortunately, it wasn't such a rare occasion for Wooyoung to get dumped by the useless guys he found on dating apps.
He would talk to lots of guys through the app, connect with someone, go on 3 or 4 dates and then – something would always happen. He doesn’t think he even lasted longer than a month with any of them.
But at the end of the day, he knew it wasn’t that serious. By the next morning Wooyoung would always be fine, already laughing like he usually does, joking with San about how unworthy all of those guys had been of him. And he was right, they all were.
He asked Wooyoung once, after too many nights spent watching films and eating ice cream together, why he keeps coming back to those apps.
“I just want to be loved,” he said in a small voice, San could hear the tears were threatening to fall in his voice.
“I know it's not that serious, and it's not like I got too attached after just 3 dates but it still hurts. It’s like a reminder of how unloveable I am" Wooyoung said.
San's heart broke a little when he heard those words. He wished he could hold Wooyoung until he’ll understand just how loved he was, by everyone around him.
It was impossible not to adore Jung Wooyoung.
With his loud bright laugh, shining eyes, the way he clings onto the person who’s closest to him so they’ll know how much they made him laugh, the way he would always cook for San if he’ll notice him neglecting himself. Wooyoung was kind, caring, and so deserving of love.
Wooyoung was the warmest and friendliest person he had ever known. He cared immensely about everyone around him, and would do everything in his power so they'll feel cared for. San had always seen Wooyoung’s presence in his life as a big privilege. Making sure Wooyoung knew just how much he cared, how grateful he was that he’s Wooyoung’s best friend.
It didn't surprise San that all Wooyoung ever looked for was love.
But he also knew, the type of love Wooyoung was looking for wasn't the kind of love that San shared for him. Wooyoung needed more.
🌤️✨
Wooyoung and San met when they were 18.
It’s not like San didn't have any friends back in his hometown, but he always felt a bit lonely. He was quiet and shy, and most of his friends had different interests than him and that made him feel a bit left out. Especially in his last high school year, they all gained an interest in dating and romance, and San felt a bit alienated from them, since no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't find the same interest as them in dating. And on the one and only occasion he decided to give it a shot….it didn’t end that well, and San just ended up hurting someone he truly cared about.
That’s why in a desperate attempt to find some comfort in a community, he decided to sign up for an anime forum online, a place where he could freely talk about his interests without feeling alienated.
That’s where he met Wooyoung.
Wooyoung, he learned, was the same age as him, and moved to the big city just a month ago to study dance at university. He was lonely as well, starting a new chapter all alone in a new city.
They seemed to have clicked instantly. Going from talking once a day to exchanging phone numbers and constantly texting throughout the day. Seems like bonding over feeling lonely and anime can get you very far with someone. They would often facetime to watch anime together, called each other spontaneously just to keep each other company, and stay up late talking about anything and everything until the early hours of the morning.
With Wooyoung in his life now, San felt the gaping hole in his chest closing off, no longer feeling so alone in his hometown with Wooyoung by his side (even if Wooyoung was 4 hours drive away from him).
His family constantly teased him, calling Wooyoung his ‘special friend’, since he would always drop everything when Wooyoung called. San didn't mind, since Wooyoung was growing to be really special to him. He couldn't deny how close they suddenly became. In just a few months, San found himself smiling so much more now and he knew his family could see the change in his behavior and relate it to the new mysterious friend he’s been talking to almost every day.
San wondered if it was strange to call Wooyoung his best friend despite him living so far away.
Eventually he saved enough money working for his dad’s taekwondo studio to plan a little trip to Seoul, to visit Wooyoung.
He still remembers what it felt like, seeing Wooyoung for the first time in real life. He knew what he looked like, of course. After all, they would facetime at least twice a week. There was just something about finally meeting a person who had made you feel so seen, so loved, in such a short time.
San spent 3 nights at Wooyoung’s apartment, it was the best trip he had gone on in his life (to be fair, he didn't leave his hometown much) and San vowed to himself to save enough money to be able to move to the big city and be closer to Wooyoung.
And a year later, with enough money in his pocket, he finally enrolled at Wooyoung's university, declaring himself as a philosophy major.
San’s decision to major in philosophy was actually Wooyoung’s impact.
They were rewatching death note together while facetiming one evening. San would go on long rants after every episode about his thoughts on the plot, and how much that anime made him think, and question absolutely everything.
“You should study philosophy,” Wooyoung said while giggling. “You always come up with the most interesting questions, I feel like you can put it to good use and do something about it"
And San did.
When people ask why San chose to study philosophy, he’d always feel a bit shy admitting it came from an anime. But Wooyoung always encouraged him, telling him “you’re so cool, Sannie” because he gained his inspiration from what he loved.
San made the big move to Seoul and that was it, from there on out they became inseparable.
So inseparable, that all of Wooyoung's friends became his own, since he spent his first year in the city clinging to him. So inseparable, that all of their friends knew you couldn’t call just one of them without calling the other, they were a package deal. So inseparable, that occasionally when he introduced himself to new people at their university, they would immediately ask “you’re Wooyoung’s San, right? ”
Now, at the age of 22, they had changed a few habits over the years, no longer needing to facetime twice a week and watch their favorite anime together. Now, they would just meet up at one of their apartments, and these days they would watch a ton of films instead of anime anyways, which was fine by San.
They don't cling so much to each other now, as they did back then when San just moved to the city. Back then, San was still new to the big city life and Wooyoung was just excited his long distance best friend was so physically close to him all the time.
They are their own two people now, which was for the best. Especially since Wooyoung graduated last year, and San was in his last year. San got to meet new friends at his degree, and Wooyoung met new people at the new dance studio he worked at.
But at the end of the day, their chemistry was unmatched, that much was clear.
One thing that didn't change though was calling each other at spontaneous times, sometimes a bit too spontaneous, hence why Wooyoung was calling him right now at 2:30am. Luckily for Wooyoung, since San still has one more year of classes left, it means he is up till late most nights anyways, finishing up his assignments.
“You wouldn't believe what just happened,'' Wooyoung said when he picked up the phone.
“Hello to you too” San said while chuckling, Wooyoung sounded excited and a bit out of breath, meaning that his friend was probably a bit drunk.
“So you know how I went to see that one band that Hongjoong likes, right? ” San hummed as a reply, he remembers. Wooyoung asked San to go with him but San felt a bit too tired to go.
“So I was standing there all alone, dancing in my own little bubble, when this handsome guy approached me”
San hummed. Wooyoung would always call him at unreasonable times just to tell him the wildest stories of things that had happened to him. Sometimes it would be a silly story about tripping in the middle of the street, sometimes he would call at 1am just to tell San about the weird taxi ride he just had, and sometimes it would be about a good date that he had. San guessed it was more like the last one, from how excited Wooyoung sounds through the phone.
“We started to chat and he was so nice! He was taller and so pretty, seriously, I had to stop myself from staring at his face,” Wooyoung said while giggling.
“We went to a bar afterwards that was nearby and he was seriously so unreal. He works at tv, a tv station! Can you believe that? That sounds so cool! ” That was kind of cool, San guesses.
He wonders if Wooyoung was exaggerating or if the guy is that nice and handsome and successful like he says.
“He walked me home and we exchanged phone numbers. We haven’t done anything but i’m pretty sure he was flirting with me all night long ”
San has to admit, he’s really rooting for his friend, of course. But he couldn't help but worry a little, knowing how much Wooyoung craves to be loved and how this situation could turn around quickly, and he’ll call San in a few weeks to bring him some ice cream and cuddles.
San didn't mind it when Wooyoung called. He’d follow to the end of the world for him, he really would. It just hurt him, to see his best friend with tears in his eyes over some meaningless guys, over and over again.
“That’s great, Wooyoung” he said instead of voicing his concern. The last thing Wooyoung needed right now was for San to fuss over him, especially when he sounded so excited.
But It's fine, they had a system. San would be there in a heartbeat when Wooyoung’s next heartbreak comes. For now, he’d let his friend enjoy the promise of something new.
🌤️✨
His name was Park Seonghwa.
He was older than them by three years and looked like he knew a thing or two about this world. San gets why Wooyoung was so impressed with him. He was polite, and nice, just like Wooyoung has said. And honestly? San also had to stop himself from staring at his ridiculously pretty face. He wasn't that much taller than San himself, but something about the way he presented himself made San feel small in his presence.
They met only briefly. Wooyoung desperately wanted to show San that Seonghwa was actually real, so he told San to drop by his house to pick up his forgotten textbook which he urgently needed back for classes. And if that happens to be exactly when Wooyoung was having Seonghwa over for dinner, it was merely a coincidence, and definitely not an elaborate plan.
Honestly, no one even uses textbooks anymore, and San took one of Wooyoung’s old ones just to not seem so suspicious.
“Soֿ? ” Wooyoung said over the phone, later that evening. As soon as seonghwa left his apartment, Wooyoung was blowing up San’s phone, demanding him to stop studying and answer his calls.
“So?” San echoed back. A smile appeared on his face. He can't say he's not endeared by his best friend being so excited.
“Don't play dumb, please. What did you think? ”
Honestly? He seemed like an actual decent guy, unlike any of the other guys Wooyoung dated. “You were right, he’s so pretty. What is up with his face structure anyways?”
And San guesses he said the right thing since Wooyoung giggled at the other end of the phone.
“I know, right? ” Wooyoung sounded so excited, “And get this, despite asking him for dinner at my place he's still not doing anything. Not even a kiss on the cheek! I don’t think he is aware I've been asking him on dates for the past two weeks ”
“Really? You honestly never cook your special pasta for anyone, he doesn't know how privileged he is right now” San said jokingly.
“I literally cooked pasta for you just last week, stop being dramatic”
San laughed, “but it's not the same thing though, isn't it?”
There was a moment of silence on the line, which wasn't really that unusual, since Wooyoung got distracted a lot. More often than not, he was scrolling on his instagram while talking on the phone with him and San has gotten used to the silence. Wooyoung was probably watching a video of a cat being adorable.
But this silence felt a bit strange, too sudden.
“Wooyoung?” San asked, making sure his best friend was still there.
“Yeah, sorry. I just remembered I still need to do the dishes, I'll call you tomorrow, okay? ”
And then he hung up.
🌤️✨
The next time he met Seonghwa was official.
It was a bit strange, since San never actually got to meet Wooyoung’s previous dates.
So really, San shouldn't be surprised when Seonghwa and Wooyoung sat in front of him for lunch, and Wooyoung introduced Seonghwa as his boyfriend.
Things were happening so fast.
Last month Seonghwa was still unaware Wooyoung had been taking him out on dates, and now they’re boyfriends? San couldn't help but worry.
With Wooyoung’s previous dates, he never had to worry much. Sure, he never quite understood why Wooyoung kept going on those dates, why he kept trusting strangers on those apps a bit too easily, but at the end of the day, they were all meaningless, and no one ever got a label from Wooyoung.
But that wasn't the case with Seonghwa.
He must be really different, if Wooyoung labeled him as a boyfriend. He must be really special to be the first person Wooyoung dates seriously.
San had to stop being so protective of Wooyoung. He was an adult, and he trusted him to take care of himself. By the end of their lunch, he was determined Seonghwa was a great guy. He was nice, caring, he listened to Wooyoung so attentively, but also made sure to be interested in what San had to say as well.
San knew he had to let go and let his best friend finally be loved like he always wanted.
And so, months went on. Winter turned into spring, San finished all of his midterms and Wooyoung– Wooyoung was finally happily dating. It’s been months, and San hasn't received the usual post break up text from Wooyoung. It’s been months, and instead of tears all he’d seen was Wooyoung glowing more than he ever had before.
San liked Seonghwa, he really did. The more he got to know him, the more he realized he was one of the kindest people he had ever met. And Wooyoung genuinely deserves only the kindest soul to reciprocate his feelings.
San stopped expecting that dreadful text from Wooyoung, he stopped expecting the worst. All that was left was to support Wooyoung alongside his partner.
And hey, maybe they could still meet to watch movies while eating ice cream, cuddling together on the couch, seeking comfort and warmth. They shouldn't use Wooyoung’s heartache as an excuse for them to be there for each other.

brokeback mountain 19:26 PM
San was confused. Wooyoung hasn't texted him since last night, and the message caught him off guard, because of those two words he hasn't heard from Wooyoung in so long.
San stared at this phone in disbelief for what felt like hours, knowing in reality, only a few minutes passed since he got Wooyoung’s text
He couldn’t understand if this was a joke, if Wooyoung was just reminiscing about old times, where everything was so different. It’s been almost a year and a half, after all.
But the message felt too sudden, too specific, for it to be about reminiscing the old times. San was honestly too afraid to ask, but he knew he had to.
Wooyoung, are you being serious rn 19:31 PM
San texted back, anxiously waiting for Wooyoung to reply back. Not even a minute later he got a text back.
yes 19:31 PM
Fuck.
Maybe if he would have gotten this text a year ago, he wouldn't have been so shocked. But it's been almost a year and a half since Wooyoung and Seonghwa had started dating, and the possibility of them breaking up just felt wrong.
im leavin the door unlocked 19:32 PM
just come in 19:32 PM
San didn't waste any time, immediately looking for his oversized gray hoodie somewhere in his closet. It’s the beginning of May now, the last few weeks of spring were here but the warm summer’s sun was just starting to show up, but he knew Wooyoung wouldn't mind the heat, he always felt comforted wearing San’s gray hoodie, the one that was a bit too big for him. he put on his hoodie and left his house without looking back.
Wooyoung lived 20 minutes by foot from San, but if he’ll half jog his way towards Wooyoung’s he can maybe arrive there in 13 minutes.
On his way there, he couldn't help but wonder, how this could’ve happened? They looked so happy and if they had any serious issues, Wooyoung definitely didn't tell San about any of them. He felt clueless, wondering if Wooyoung was hiding things from him all of these months.
He was climbing up the stairs, two stairs at a time, until he reached the 3rd floor. He was sweating in his hoodie, he really should have just wrapped it around his waist. It doesn't matter now, nothing matters – besides the person that’s waiting for him behind that door.
He opened the door, expecting to see Wooyoung sitting on the couch, only to be welcomed by a dark apartment that looked lifeless and empty. A big wave of dread and worry was starting to fill him inside.
He removed his shoes, left the bag of ice cream on the kitchen counter, and walked to Wooyoung’s bedroom. His door was closed but he didn't bother knocking, knowing his friend was expecting him anyways.
And when he opened it– his heart ached.
The room was dark. The only thing that was lighting it was the small moon shaped lamp Wooyoung had by his bedside, a lamp San gifted him when they were 19.
Wooyoung was lying on his bed, holding a pillow close to his chest. He was wearing an oversized black hoodie that seemed to have swallowed him whole, leaving just a black puddle on the bed.
“Hey” San said softly, as he walked slowly to Wooyoung’s bed. Now that he’s standing so close to Wooyoung he can see the state of his best friend. He looked exhausted, he doesn't remember the last time he saw Wooyoung looking so tired. His nose was red, eyes swollen and puffy, his eyes were avoiding San. His heart just kept on breaking at the sight in front of him.
San sat on the bed beside him, removing the hoodie from Wooyoung’s hair, to gently start to caress his hair. Wooyoung closed his eyes, took a deep breath that felt a bit too shaky for his liking, and when he opened them, he could see a new wave of tears gathering up in the corner of his eyes.
San knew how to comfort Wooyoung in his breakups, he knew what to do to make his friend laugh, and to make him feel cared for. But looking back at it now, they weren't really breakups, weren't they? Not the kind that mattered, not the kind that made you feel like your heart got torn out of your chest.
He barely even knew those guys, he always felt completely fine the next day. Wooyoung was just so warm and had a heart so big, he couldn't help but hurt for a little, but it was never that serious with them.
This time, he could see in Wooyoung’s eyes how tired he was, how the spark his eyes usually had wasn't there right now. He suddenly felt so powerless, for the first time not really knowing what to say in order to comfort Wooyoung.
He kept caressing Wooyoung’s hair for what felt like hours. His hand was starting to get tired, but it didn't even matter. Wooyoung was sniffing occasionally, but otherwise crying silently, while San was caressing his hair, again and again, repeating the movement until he saw Wooyoung’s body relax a little, and heard him sniff less.
There was something slightly terrifying about the loudest person in the room crying so silently.
“Do you want any ice cream?” San asked carefully, after it’s been some time and he remembered the ice cream he left on the kitchen counter, that was probably just melted sugared water, at this point.
Wooyoung shakes his head. Things must be really bad if Wooyoung hasn't even asked him which flavor he bought. San got up, intending to put the ice cream in the freezer, when Wooyoung grabbed his wrist, whining quietly.
“I'm just going to put the ice cream in the refrigerator, okay? I'm gonna come back in one minute”
But Wooyoung didn't move his hand, instead, he held onto San’s hoodie and pulled him towards him.
Oh.
Wooyoung was wearing his own oversized hoodie, he didn't even think he wanted to wear his own hoodie, especially since he was so sweaty and he’s sure it showed.
“I’m so sweaty, i think my hoodie smells” San said in honesty, despite him wanting to bring his hoodie for Wooyoung, he hasn't thought of this all the way through.
“I don't care,'' Wooyoung said quietly, voice hoarse. He sounded so small. San realized these were the first words Wooyoung spoke to him.
He took off his hoodie, and gave it to Wooyoung, who immediately held it close to him.
“I'm going to come back in a minute, okay?” San asked gently, wanting to make sure Wooyoung was okay with being alone. Wooyoung nodded, so he left, but not before caressing his hair one last time, hoping it would express just how much he cared for him.
The ice cream had obviously melted, just as San thought, but it was okay. He put the box in the freezer, and hoped tomorrow Wooyoung will be in the mood for some weirdly shaped ice cream. He locked the door to his apartment, realizing he had accidentally left it open when he rushed inside, too distracted by Wooyoung needing him to notice.
Finally, back in Wooyoung’s bedroom, he spotted the black hoodie Wooyoung previously wore on the floor. Wooyoung was lying in the same position wearing his gray hoodie now, only now it seems like he was hugging himself, making himself look even smaller, somehow.
San approached the bed with careful steps. He knew Wooyoung craved physical intimacy, especially when he was in a bad mood, but he also never dealt with Wooyoung being this heartbroken and he didn't want to cross any boundaries.
“Can I hold you?” San asked in the silence of the room. He’s not used to the room being so quiet when he’s with Wooyoung.
“Please” Wooyoung said quietly, and San’s heart ached once again. He went to lay behind him, gently wrapping his arms around his waist. After a minute he felt Wooyoung’s hand holding his own, holding onto San tightly.
He could feel Wooyoung’s body shaking slightly, as if he was trying to hold back his sobs.
“Don't prevent your tears from falling, young-ah” he said softly. “There’s no need to hide your feelings when you’re with me”
Apparently that was all Wooyoung needed to hear. He let out a shaky exhale that sounded like he was in so much pain, and then he started to cry, much louder.
Wooyoung’s heartbreak was evident in the way he cried. He no longer suffered quietly, instead he cried loudly and all San could do was hold Wooyoung tightly to his chest, making sure Wooyoung knew how loved he was, that he’s not alone and he will never be.
He’s never seen his best friend like this. Wooyoung has never been in this much pain in front of him, and his heart was getting heavier with every cry Wooyoung let out. Is it possible to experience a heartbreak just from watching your best friend suffer so much?
Eventually Wooyoung’s cries started slowing down, his breathing becoming more even and his body relaxing in San’s arms. Not before long, San noticed Wooyoung had peacefully fallen asleep.
San rested his head on Wooyoung’s nape and tried to ignore the awful feeling that started to spread inside his stomach, and fell asleep as well.
🌩️🌑
They were sitting in silence on opposite sides of the kitchen aisle after breakfast.
When they woke up, San attempted to make breakfast for Wooyoung despite the fact that out of the both of them, Wooyoung was always the one that cooked. He glanced at Wooyoung’s plate, noticing it was still full. He knows he's not the greatest cook, but he also knows he's not the worst, meaning Wooyoung not eating wasn’t directly related to his cooking skills.
“He- he didn't even do it in person” Wooyoung suddenly said. They haven't really talked this morning besides exchanging hellos with each other. Wooyoung’s voice was still hoarse and small.
He cleared his throat before continuing, “He texted me saying he needed to talk urgently so I immediately called him. I swear he was gonna do it through text, which makes this so fucked up”
Wooyoung wasn't looking at him, his gaze was stuck on his barely touched breakfast. “He’s been really distant with me for the past two weeks. I thought he was just really stressed because of work, but guess I was wrong"
San wondered why Wooyoung hadn't talked to him about it before. Oversharing wasn't really an issue with Wooyoung– his immediate action after every inconvenience in his life was to call and share with San about it. And though he still keeps a lot about his relationship private, this was usually the sort of thing they would easily share with each other.
“I feel like such a fucking idiot, i kept sending him cute good morning messages, kept going to bed so late just because I was waiting for his usual good night texts, but they never came. I should have known” his voice broke a little in the end, eyes were starting to shine from the tears in his eyes.
“You’re not an idiot,” San said, feeling a bit helpless.
“I really am though,” Wooyoung said as the tears started to fall from his eyes.
San was definitely not a violent person, usually avoiding conflict at all costs, but he was honestly a second away from finding Seonghwa and punching him (he would never, he’s too sensitive, but there is nothing wrong with a little vengeful fantasy).
“He said that he cares for me but” Wooyoung took a moment in an attempt to calm down, stop his tears from falling so quickly, “this wasn't working for him anymore”
Seonghwa wasn't like the useless guys Wooyoung was used to going on dates with. Those dates were always superficial, the guys having meaningless reasons for breaking it off with Wooyoung. Since Wooyoung barely knew them, San felt no remorse in telling him how awful they were and how Wooyoung deserved much better.
This wasn't like them at all.
This was a person Wooyoung genuinely loved, this was a person Wooyoung thought he’d date for a long time. Until yesterday, this was a person San liked and approved of, thinking he was kind and decent enough not to break his best friend’s heart. San still doesn't think he understands, since the couple seemed to be perfectly fine.
Later, they moved to the couch to eat the ice cream San brought while watching whatever show that was on tv. It was clear that neither of them were really paying attention to what was on the tv, San still lost in how to comfort his best friend and Wooyoung no doubt is lost in his own head.
“Do you want to talk about it?” San asked, wanting to know what’s on Wooyoung's mind.
Wooyoung shook his head “'i’m kind of really tired from crying, and my head really hurts”
“Do you want some pills? You know I always bring some with me,” San said, trying his best.
Wooyoung shook his head and then looked at San, not avoiding his gaze probably for the first time since he arrived yesterday. “Sannie, thank you so much for arriving so quickly when I called, and thank you for being here. I don’t know what i would have done without you”
San chuckled dryly, “really? I feel kind of useless.”
And Wooyoung smiled at San, a little bit, his smile still looked a bit off with his tired facial expression. “Just being here with me is more than enough”.
San smiled softly at him, wrapping his arm around Wooyoung to bring him closer, and reaching out to rub his arm in a comforting motion.
They were sitting so close to each other, knees touching. And with San’s arm that was wrapped around Wooyoung, they felt even closer. Wooyoung rested his head on San’s shoulder and exhaled loudly through his nose.
Things will be just fine, San is sure of it, even if it’ll take them a while to get there.
🌩️🌑
Unfortunately, though the world stopped moving in Wooyoung’s mind, in the real world, life continued as normal, hence why San had to leave Wooyoung’s apartment the next day to go to work.
How dare the world be so completely clueless and insensitive to the fact that San’s favorite person is in pain and needs San by his side?
San even contemplated skipping work altogether. Since it was so short notice, he could tell them he had a high fever and couldn’t get out of bed, but he decided against it.
San was a teaching assistant at the university he had graduated from. He was still an apprentice since he had started not too long ago. He took a summer course that was required in order to be qualified for the job and had begun right away and honestly, he really loved his job. He liked that he could continue learning more and be able to help students, especially when he was an anxious student himself not even a year ago.
Unfortunately though, being a teacher’s assistant doesn't pay that much, especially for a newbie like San, so he really couldn't afford to miss work. Besides, Wooyoung was expected to show up at the dance studio anyways.
Everything’s going to be fine. Wooyoung probably really needs to break the cycle of sleeping and crying anyways. He expresses himself best through dance, rather than words, so it’s best for him to go to the studio.
He kept thinking that it would be fine until he noticed a missed phone call from Wooyoung in the middle of a lecture.
San’s anxiety immediately spiked, but he couldn't really leave the lecture until the end. There were only 25 minutes of class left.
are you okay??? srry for not answering, im at work 13:20 PM
He tried to focus on what he was doing, but eventually he was lost in his own thoughts (just like 60% of the students in the class were doing) Before he knew it, the 25 remaining minutes were gone and the students were shuffling out of the classroom.
sorry! u can just call me back when ur free 13:24 PM
San packed his things as quickly as he could to get out of that lecture hall.
“Are you okay?” he said to his phone. He was on the way to the bus station, not knowing if he should get on one to his apartment or Wooyoung’s.
"I'm sorry, I honestly forgot you had class,” Wooyoung said on the phone. His voice…it sounded wrong. San could hear the shakiness underneath his words and he felt his heart sink to his stomach. San spotted the bus that took the route to Wooyoung's apartment and quickly decided to get on it
“It's okay, don't worry about it. Is everything alright?” His university isn’t that far from Wooyoung’s apartment, considering he moved there to begin with to be closer to campus. He should be at his place in 15 minutes if there isn’t any traffic.
"It's stupid ” Wooyoung said, voice shaking. He hated how in the last few days he heard Wooyoung speaking about himself in a self-deprecating way more than he ever had in years.
“Whatever it is, it’s not stupid, okay? I can be at your place in 15”
And 15 minutes later he was entering Wooyoung’s apartment, a little out of breath from running up the stairs.
Wooyoung was sitting on his couch. San immediately spotted the box of tissues in front of him and his shiny red nose. Wooyoung was still wearing the hoodie he left yesterday at his place
“Hi,” Wooyoung said in a weak voice.
San approached the couch and sat down next to Wooyoung. He went to embrace Wooyoung, sensing in his voice that he probably really needed the comfort right now.
He was proven right because Wooyoung immediately clung to him, San could feel his body start shaking in his arms, quite whimpers leaving his mouth.
“It’s so stupid” Wooyoung said between sobs. San released him from the embrace to look at Wooyoung’s face.
At this point, it was actually physically painful to see his best friend so miserable, while feeling like he couldn’t do anything to stop it.
“Whatever it is, if it makes you react like this it's not stupid, okay?” San said softly while staring into Wooyoung’s eyes.
Wooyoung closed his eyes and nodded, when he opened them again he leaned towards San again and said “Could you hold me while I talk?”
San nodded and immediately wrapped his arms around Wooyoung and brought him closer.
After several moments of silence, Wooyoung spoke. “Everything was fine when I arrived at the studio. It was a little hard to let loose in the beginning, but eventually I managed to feel better”
San rubbed his hand up and down Wooyoung’s back in a comforting motion, doing whatever he could to ease Wooyoung’s pain.
“It was all fine, until Jihyo asked If we were still going to go on the double date we had planned later this week with her and her girlfriend and I–” Wooyoung abruptly stopped, his voice was weak and shaky, attempting to contain the sobs from escaping his mouth. “I didn't know what to tell her. I suddenly felt so fucking pathetic” he voice cracked as he said the last word, and San could only hold him tighter and hope it was enough.
“I felt so pathetic, knowing Seonghwa let me make plans with them just days before he broke up with me, and there is no way he didn't know. He let me make a fool of myself, he let me make plans with him for the future like I'm nothing” and that's all it took for Wooyoung to completely break down, no longer holding his sobs.
“You’re not pathetic young-ah, he’s the asshole here, I promise” San said, trying to reassure Wooyoung.
He held Wooyoung in his arms for what felt like hours, San rubbed his hand up and down Wooyoung’s back and whispered words of comfort in his ear, until Wooyoung calmed down and stopped shaking in his arms.
it might take longer than he thought for things to be okay again, but he’s ready to be here for Wooyoung until it does. San’s prepared to do whatever he needs to for Wooyoung’s life to be easier and painless.
🌩️🌒
After that incident, San practically moved into Wooyoung’s apartment. He still sleeps in his own apartment, visits to water his plants, but he spends the majority of his time at Wooyoung’s.
He has to go to work twice a week but besides those two days, he works from home – which is perfect considering Wooyoung is there to keep him company.
After the incident with Jihyo, Wooyoung was worried about having to talk about his breakup and breaking down in public, and asked for a week off, after explaining the situation to his boss and coworkers.
It’s been two weeks since the breakup and Wooyoung decided that he can’t just sit around and suffer, he has to do something actively so he can start to heal.
The first step was to get rid of Seonghwa’s stuff that loomed around the apartment like uninvited ghosts.
there wasn’t much. His hair products went to the trash immediately without thought, the perfume he left in Wooyoung’s bathroom cabinet also went to the trash (maybe San threw that one away before asking for permission from Wooyoung, knowing it would do him good).
Seonghwa had a few clothes left in Wooyoung's closet. It wasn’t much, a pair of jeans, some pjs, and two sweaters. Wooyoung was still hesitant to text Seonghwa and ask him to pick up his clothes. San understood his hesitation, given that a two weeks is not nearly enough time to get over years worth of memories with someone.
San took his clothes to his own apartment while texting Seonghwa (with Wooyoung's approval, of course) to ask when he wanted to pick up his things.
San was honestly shocked when Seonghwa replied to him, almost 24 hours later with a dry text.
No need, you can throw them away 09:23 AM
What an asshole.
San genuinely didn’t understand what was going on in Seonghwa's head. Seonghwa was kind, and from what he saw he loved Wooyoung. San’s overprotective nature over Wooyoung slowly drifted away with time when he saw how dedicated Seonghwa was. Seonghwa, easily telling him to throw away his clothes just so he won’t have to see San again, felt completely off.
San was grateful that Wooyoung never asked if Seonghwa picked his clothes up.
Another week passed, and San kept spending time with Wooyoung, watching films with him, cooking lunch for him, going on walks with him around the neighborhood, but Wooyoung never asked, so San never said anything.
Wooyoung doesn't really talk much about the breakup or Seonghwa, and San’s sure he has so much he’s keeping inside of him, he can still see in his face how much pain he’s holding, but he doesn't want to rush, Wooyoung will speak at his own time, on his own terms.
It was another night of them hanging around in Wooyoung’s apartment. They were watching some random action film, one that doesn’t have any romantic stories in it by accident (San picked the movies very carefully). Towards the end of the film, San realized Wooyoung had fallen asleep while resting his head on his shoulder. He felt a heart skip a beat in his chest, as he looked at his best friend’s face.
Wooyoung looked peaceful and calm like this, and San felt honored he chose his shoulder to give him the comfort he needed right now. Not that he had a lot of shoulders lining up right now but still, it didn’t matter.
He’s a bit confused as to why his heart is reacting to the sight of Wooyoung sleeping. Probably since this was the calmest Wooyoung had looked in the past few weeks, and San just wants his friend to feel okay.
He had to take Wooyoung to his bedroom so he could rest. The problem was he didn’t really want to wake Wooyoung up. How rude of science to not invent the power of teleportation yet, so he could simply lay Wooyoung on his bed with just the click of a finger.
He carefully picked Wooyoung up, wrapped Wooyoung’s arms around his own shoulders, and attempted to carry him bridal-style. He could hear small noises leaving Wooyoung’s mouth, not really awake, but aware enough to know he’s being moved around.
He laid him on his bed gently, and pulled the cover on top of him. For a second he got overwhelmed by the urge to kiss him on the forehead. It definitely wasn't as weird of them to use physical intimacy with each other, maybe a kiss on the cheek on rare occasions, but something about seeing Wooyoung looking so peaceful with his eyes closed felt different, felt a bit too intimate.
He decided against doing anything and tried leaving without making any noise, when suddenly Wooyoung reached out his hand to grab San’s, stopping him from leaving. He pulled his hand towards him, and San understood exactly what he asked for.
He got under the blanket and laid next to Wooyoung. Once San got comfortable on the bed, Wooyoung moved closer to rest his head underneath San’s chin.
Wooyoung nuzzled his nose against San’s neck “you’re so good to me, Sannie” he said in his sweet, sleepy voice.
He wonders if Wooyoung could feel how fast his heart was beating right now, and if he could hear it, hopefully he wouldn't think too much of it. San himself was unsure as to why he was reacting like this.
He was just glad he was giving Wooyoung the support he deserves. He wrapped his arms around him and held him closer, until they both fell asleep in each other’s arms.
☁️🌓
Another week had passed since the breakup and Wooyoung was finally feeling more comfortable with opening up, and talking about his feelings.
San was working from Wooyoung’s place, as he often does. The sun was just coming down and Wooyoung closed his laptop with a loud bang, and suggested they go outside to breathe some fresh air. They‘ve been in the apartment all day long, Wooyoung looked restless the entire day so it made sense he needed some fresh air and space where he could talk about what’s on his mind.
They mostly just walked around aimlessly, without any rush, talking about the most mundane things such as doing laundry, or the current task San was working on for his job. San mentioned how anxious this current task made him feel, since he had never done something like that before. He just hoped he won’t fuck it up.
After a few minutes of them walking silently, Wooyoung started to finally talk about what’s on his mind.
“Seonghwa was really anxious too,” Wooyoung said.
“Yeah?” San asked, not really sure how to reply, but he knew he just had to make Wooyoung feel comfortable with sharing what’s on his mind.
Wooyoung nodded. “He was a really anxious person. You know, not like you and me, where we get anxious with certain situations and just, suffer momentary and deal with our shit, he was like, existential crisis every week kind of anxious”
San hummed, “i’m not sure i knew that”
“Yeah” Wooyoung started to say “he…he hid it very well, but he was very vocal about it with me.”
They continued to walk in silence for a few more minutes before Wooyoung spoke again, clearly still feeling restless “actually, i’m sure it was why he broke up with me”
“oh? how’s that?” San asked while glancing at Wooyoung's face, trying to read his facial expressions and look for any discomfort or distress. He was relieved when his best friend just looked a little lost in his mind, but his body language was relaxed.
“He– he was just obsessed with the idea of us breaking up” Wooyoung let out a small chuckle, but it lacked humor. It sounded dry and a bit sad, “you know he had already talked to me about our break up at the beginning of our relationship?”
San looked at Wooyoung with wide eyes and Wooyoung let out another dry chuckle “yeah, i was shocked too”
“Why didn't you tell me anything, young-ah?”
“I– I don't know?” Wooyoung said, suddenly sounding so small “It was the first relationship i ever had, i was just so happy to have finally find someone who wanted to love me, i was scared to talk about these things”
He wanted to hold Wooyoung in his arms, he wanted his friend to know he deserves to be loved more than anyone he knows, he wanted to show Wooyoung just how loved he is, but instead of doing anything– he just kept quiet, observing Wooyoung.
“Do you know how discouraging it is, to hear your own partner talk about your future break up, when you’re just two months into being together and feeling so in love?”
San shook his head, Wooyoung sounded hurt and he wished he knew what were the right words to say.
Wooyoung continued “I kept reassuring him, making sure he knows how happy I am with him but–” he let out another humorless laugh. “Well, we both know how that turned out”
San's heart was starting to hurt the more Wooyoung talked, feeling the bitterness and pain in his voice. He abruptly stopped walking to give into the overwhelming urge to hug Wooyoung. He just wanted to have his best friend in his arms, and reassure him.
Wooyoung was hugging him back, holding him tightly.
When they pulled apart, Wooyoung looked at San’s face with an unreadable expression. But then– he smiled at him, and for once his smile didn’t look forced or fake, and for some reason San’s heart started to ache even more.
“Thank you for being here for me” he said softly, and then went on his tippy-toes to leave a small kiss on San’s forehead.
San tries not to think about why his heart hurts when he sees Wooyoung smile, he doesn't want to think about how fast his heart was beating when his friend kissed his forehead, seeking him for physical comfort. so he takes a deep breath— and ignores the thoughts that started racing in his head.
☁️🌓
Two more weeks have passed, and the summer’s sun has finally arrived. It was the middle of June, summer was in full bloom, but the air wasn’t humid like it was in July. Now, it just smelled like hope, and new beginnings.
San was working on his laptop on Wooyoung’s bed, while Wooyoung was lying next to him, mindlessly scrolling on his phone for what felt like hours.
San was immersed in his work, when Wooyoung bursted his productive bubble by pinching San in the stomach. “Ouch?” San yelped in disbelief. “Are you in one of those moods where you act like a rabid animal?”
Instead of replying, Wooyoung just looked at him mischievously, as he leaned in to bite San's arm. It wasn't too much, just a small, playful bite. San can't say this behavior surprised him.
San couldn't help but laugh a little, feeling grateful his best friend was in a good mood, considering everything, and how many tears he had shed lately, San was just happy seeing little glimpses of the Wooyoung he knew and loved.
Wooyoung giggled loudly. San wondered if he was just too immersed in his work to notice how bright the room had just become, or was it Wooyoung's bright voice that turned the room itself bright?
“Anyways” Wooyoung started to say. “I wanted to show you something!” he said excitedly, he grabbed his phone from beside him, and showed San his phone enthusiastically.
It took a few seconds for San to realize what he was staring at. It was a mirror selfie Wooyoung and he took on his first trip to Seoul to meet Wooyoung. He remembered back then, it took them a little while to feel comfortable enough to take pics together, feeling a bit awkward and shy at first.
San remembers this pic with fondness, but he hasn't looked at it in ages.
It felt strange looking at the two baby faces on the screen, and to look up from Wooyoung’s phone to see the same person he felt so connected to when he was 18 and so so naive, still here, still present, even more important to him than he was when this picture was taken. Wooyoung’s face features became sharper with time, more defined. He looked tiny in the picture, but he somehow looks even tinier now, especially considering the fact that San’s managed to get a bit taller, the awkward posture San had is long gone now, instead he carries himself with confidence.
Wait– San had just realized, Wooyoung wasn't just showing him an old picture of them together, he was showing him his lock-screen. Oh.
He felt that strange feeling coming back, starting to spread all over San's body from his stomach, through his chest, to his throat, and eventually taking over his emotions, causing him to feel choked up for some reason.
Wooyoung’s lock-screen had been black for over a month now, since the break up. When they woke up the next morning, Wooyoung nearly started to cry when he held his phone for the first time, so San decided to change his lock-screen quickly to just a black wallpaper, simple and empty, nothing that can remind Wooyoung of his own heartbreak.
It seemed like Wooyoung was finally ready, ready for a new chapter in his life. San isn't really sure what that could mean or why he’s getting so emotional over this, but he can't help but feel like this a sign for something. A sign there’s a big change quickly approaching.
☁️🌓
It was almost two months since the breakup and things were finally starting to look up. Wooyoung is more open to talking about everything that happened, finding a lot of comfort in talking out loud, and San was just happy to be there to help.
They were sitting on Wooyoung's couch, spending their evening together. Despite the heat only getting hotter and worse outside, they were snuggling cozily inside of the chilly apartment.
San glanced at Wooyoung, wearing his oversized gray hoodie, holding a cup of tea with his cute little sweater paws, with the hood over his head, making himself look cozy.
San had never really dated anyone seriously, and he wondered if this is what people usually feel when their significant other wears their clothes.
What a weird thought to have, Choi San. He thought to himself, what the fuck, he is your best friend.
Luckily the movie began to play and it was enough to distract San from his thoughts.
They were watching a British zombie film he found online when he googled ‘stupid films to watch with your best friend’ like an idiot. But honestly, they were running out of movies and he just wanted to hear his best friend laugh again.
In the first 20 minutes though, it was obvious the main couple in the film was going to break up. San felt scammed, he specifically looked for silly films to watch! No breakups! Google deceived him.
He anxiously looked at Wooyoung, afraid he’d see him holding back tears, but instead, his best friend was smiling at the screen. “He’s such an idiot, I would have totally broken up with him too, and right before a zombie apocalypse! Can you imagine being stuck with that idiot in that scenario?”
San couldn't help but laugh, in awe of Wooyoung. He always knows how to keep surprising him. He always knew Wooyoung was strong, he was one of the strongest people he knew, always providing infinite support to all of his loved ones. but it just felt nice, because for a few moments it felt like everything was back to normal, back to the Wooyoung of all those months ago who felt so different from the Wooyoung from the past two months.
🌩️🌒
Healing wasn’t linear, and it isn't always something beautiful.
Sometimes it’s Wooyoung calling him in the middle of the night, sobbing, telling him he had a nightmare and he just really needs to hear San's voice.
Sometimes it's staying over for weekends at your best friend’s place because he is terrified of being alone with himself, terrified of dreaming of a certain face that’s haunting his progress, threatening to do him harm.
San held him in his sleep for two nights, he held him as his shook and cried, looking so small in his arms. Every time San looked at him, he felt his heart in agony piercing in pain.
“I’m so pathetic” Wooyoung whispered quietly, he said quietly as if he was talking to himself more than he was talking to San. but San still heard him. Even Wooyoung's quietest voice rang loud in his ears.
All he could do was hold Wooyoung closer to his chest, rubbing his back in a comforting motion as he rocked Wooyoung back and forward.
He kissed the top of his head “you’re anything but pathetic. You probably thought you’d spend the rest of your life with him” San wished his heart didn't hurt as he said those words. “reacting like this is only normal”
And suddenly dangerous, dangerous thoughts made themselves at home for the first time in San's mind. He wanted to be the one Wooyoung would spend the rest of his life with.
He couldn’t help but think that he would have never treated Wooyoung like this. More than anything, he would have loved the chance to show Wooyoung how he could love him properly, the way he deserved to be loved. His chest started to ache as these thoughts began to spiral. The strange feeling that had been taking over his body and spreading through him like wildfire finally made so much sense.
So this is what falling in love felt like?
No wonder Wooyoung was aching so much.
He wasn’t shocked by his own emotions, far from it. It felt right, it felt like he was finally able to understand what he had been feeling for a while now, it had a name— it was love.
The same kind of love Wooyoung was looking for, the same kind of love San had wished he could provide his best friend when he needed it the most, all those years ago, it was always there, he was just too blind to see it.
He held Wooyoung closer to his chest as his best friend cried, feeling powerless and so small. Trying not to hurt too much, realizing he’s holding the person that he loves, as he cries over another person.
☁️🌓
San was feeling very calm for a person who just realized he was in love with his best friend, who he has known since he was 18.
As he went down memory lane, a lot of things started to make much more sense to him.
When San first moved into the city, all Wooyoung and him did was cling to each other and the first time he met Wooyoung’s friends, he’s sure they thought they were dating, eyeing the lack of personal space between them, before realizing that’s just how the are, platonic .
Looking back at it now, every person from their university that referred to him as ‘Wooyoung’s San’ probably thought they were dating too.
They were physically affectionate, always hugging, always touching in one way or another; a hand on a thigh, a knee, an arm, thighs squished together, legs intertwined, fingers playing with the rips of their jeans.
But when Wooyoung started to date Seonghwa, they naturally eased down on the physical aspect of their friendship, they weren't constantly seeking each other’s warmth like they once were. Not like San really could have, because back then Wooyoung would always sit next to Seonghwa, would hold his hand, would play with the rips in his jeans. But it all made sense now, why Wooyoung had to stop.
San can definitely see now what he couldn't really see back then, but he’s sure his overprotectiveness over Wooyoung came a little from jealousy too, both emotions suddenly feeling so similar.
his older sister would always call Wooyoung his ‘special friend’ when they just started to talk, never forgetting to add quotation marks with her hands when she said that. He never paid that much attention to what she meant back then, but now it was starting to make sense.
And he also knew all of those different people did not reach the same conclusion by chance or out of thin air.
All it took was just one glance at how Wooyoung and San looked at each other to know that there was more underneath the surface. A kind of bond that couldn't be simply described as platonic.
San always had an issue though with identifying his emotions, especially when it came to romantic love.
The first and only real romantic experience he had was with a boy who grew up with him in the same neighborhood, Choi Jongho.
They really didn’t spend much time together as kids, despite growing up in the same neighborhood. They were both kind of shy, and were too afraid to initiate anything, despite their moms nagging them to hang out all of the time.
But it all changed when they started high school. Slowly, they started to hang out with each other between classes, they started to walk to school together, and San would often wait for Jongho to finish his last class so they could walk home together.
Eventually, after three years of being friends and slowly getting closer with each other, during San’s last year in high school, Jongho confessed.
A big part of why San felt so alienated from the boys in his grade, and the friends he made along the years in his hometown, was his lack of interest in relationships and sex compared to the rest of his friends. Despite San's fondness for romantic films and love songs, he didn’t spend much time thinking about being in a relationship. He felt detached whenever that topic would come up, whenever anyone talked about their crush, or when San's grandparents asked when he would bring a girl home.
So when Jongho confessed, that was when he truly thought about it for the first time. He tried to analyze his own feelings towards jongho and understand if maybe he could feel the same way towards him. The longer he thought about Jongho and him together he realized it felt…right? It felt natural to imagine them together, they were spending so much time together as it was, San didn't think anything in their dynamic would really change.
So they started to date.
It was really nice, at first. Nothing really changed, they would still walk together to school and back home, they’d still meet up during the weekends to play games, but naturally, they got more physically intimate with each other, when it was just the two of them alone. It surprised him how nice it felt to kiss someone, how much he enjoyed holding Jongho, and how soft his lips were.
But it all changed when they slept with each other for the first time.
San felt weird afterwards, he felt like something was not quite right. and suddenly, Jongho’s kisses didn’t feel quite right either. Everything felt like too much and San was just so confused about his own feelings. After some thinking, he realized he mistook his genuine love for Jongho as romantic, when it never was.
So, he decided to be honest and tell Jongho he thinks they’d be better off as friends. Jongho didn’t take it so well and they haven’t spoken to each other since. San couldn’t blame him. After all, they were such close friends, and without even realizing it at first, San took advantage of Jongho’s trust and hurt him deeply.
It’s been years, but San never really got better at identifying and understanding his emotions. If anything, he was just more careful and reserved, not wanting to repeat the same mistakes and hurt anyone else.
Sometimes, as a student and on the rare occasions he felt social, he would show up to parties, got himself wasted and found himself making out with random people he had never met before, just to feel something, anything, trying to understand what all the boys from high school were obsessed with.
It never felt right. he always felt a bit disconnected, still not fully understanding his lack of interest. He thought maybe he was just incapable of romantic love and he was fine with that. So he just accepted that and moved on with his life, prioritizing his degree and friends, like he always had.
But with Wooyoung, it felt different.
Since they began talking to each other, he realized his emotions towards him were always different and that what they had was something special.
He cared for him in a way he never cared for anyone before. San, naively thought it just meant Wooyoung was the first real best friend he ever had and though he wasn’t necessarily wrong since Wooyoung was the closest friend he ever had, it wasn’t only that. Now, after taking care of Wooyoung for two months, he realized how naive he was by confusing his newfound romantic feelings for something platonic.
Wooyoung was so unique and special to him. He was bright, loud, and loved so deeply. He put every fiber of his being into the things he was passionate about. Wooyoung was a person San has always admired. He was the only person that ever made San feel like his heart was aching, threatening to jump out of his throat and leave his chest hollow and empty.
Now analyzing their friendship after this revelation, San starts to wonder if their relationship was strictly platonic in Wooyoung's eyes.
Everything was still too heavy, though Wooyoung was slowly getting better, he was still processing the loss of a love he thought would last forever. And San was just his friend who had been by his side since he was an awkward looking 18 year old.
San who had always been there to pick up the pieces, who always provided shoulders to cry on and ears to carefully listen to anything Wooyoung had to share.
They met when they were 18, and San’s 24th birthday was coming up, and he spent all of those years being so in love with his best friend without even knowing it. It felt bittersweet, knowing that he had missed his chance with Wooyoung a long, long time ago.
☁️🌔
As San was trying to get comfortable with his newly discovered feelings, he couldn't stop thinking about Wooyoung and Seonghwa. He couldn't stop picturing them when they were together, how happy they were, how happy Seonghwa made Wooyoung, before it ended so bitterly.
Would he be able to make Wooyoung this happy, too?
He often wondered what was so different about Seonghwa than any of the other guys Wooyoung had dated. He wondered what was so special about him to matter the most.
“I think it's because he was my friend, first” Wooyoung said one night, when San’s curiosity got the best of him and he just had to ask.
“Even if I pined after him for like a whole month without him knowing, he was still my friend first. He was kind and made me feel cared for.” Wooyoung smiled sadly. San wished he never even asked.
☁️🌕
Time had passed quickly, and San’s 24th birthday was coming up. To his luck, of course his birthday fell on a Monday. Which meant he had to spend his special day working. He spent most of his morning grading assignments and sometime before noon, he felt the start of a headache forming.
His mom and sister called to wish him happy birthday right as he woke up and they spammed the family group chat with cute pictures of their family cat, Byeol, wearing a tiny birthday hat, just for him.
It was enough to make him smile like an idiot at his phone and remember how despite his headache, life was actually worth living. Cute animals usually have that effect on San. Especially Byeol.
Around 2pm San’s headache became unbearable, causing him to stop working for the rest of day. He couldn’t stand to look at his laptop screen for any longer. He took a pill, closed all of the windows in his bedroom, and got into bed for a nap, hoping he would wake up in an hour or two feeling like a new person.
He dreamt of a golden boy, giving him warmth like the summer’s sun, washing him with love and carrying an overwhelming sense of hope with him. He dreamt of a golden boy with long black hair with a contagious laugh and a beauty mark on his bottom lip.
In his dream, he reached out and touched the beauty mark on the boy’s lip before softly kissing it, over and over again. It was as easy as that.
In his dream, the golden boy held his head gently in his hands, and kissed his forehead until all of his pain faded away, it was as easy as that.
When he opened his eyes, he thought he was still asleep because the golden boy was in front of him.
“Wake up, sleepyhead” the golden boy said, his voice was so sweet. San wanted to melt.
“San there is no fucking way you’re sleeping your birthday away, wake up!” the golden boy said, and yeah. he was definitely not dreaming anymore, Wooyoung was getting snappy.
Wooyoung was lying on top of him, and San’s sleepy head can’t even register how wonderful it is to have the person that you love right on top of you, all his sleepy mind can focus on is how Wooyoung was currently squashing him.
“Migraine” San said, his voice still hoarse and deep.
Wooyoung’s mischievous look disappeared in an instant, a worried expression replacing it. He probably realized he was squashing San and moved to lay beside him, with his leg still on top of San’s, caging him in and keeping him close.
Wooyoung kissed his forehead, leaned back and asked, “and how are you feeling now?”
“Better,” San said with a smile. Yeah, a golden boy that carried the warmth of the sun with him cured me, thank you. He thought to himself.
Wooyoung smiled back at him, “sorry for breaking into your apartment”
San snorted, “No need to be dramatic, I literally gave you my spare key”
“Yeah but saying I broke into my best friend’s apartment is more extreme, which is exactly what I was going for here”
San smirked, “yeah? And why was that what you were going for?”
“Well, if my best friend stopped replying for two hours on his birthday to me and his other friends, I feel like it’s an extreme enough reason to pull out the big guns, aka the the key to your apartment”
Oh. San realized he probably should have texted back his friends and everyone who wished him a happy birthday before he went to nap. But his headache became so painful, he couldn't bear the sight of any bright screen.
“Anyway” Wooyoung started to say, as he started to run his fingers through San’s scalp. If humans could purr, San knows he would be purring right now. “Everyone is going to be at Hongjoong’s place soon, just to see their favorite birthday boy. We should go”
San hummed. He was feeling much better anyway, and he really wanted to see his friends, but his bed was just so comfortable. And after all, being here with Wooyoung so close to him, already made this birthday feel special.
Eventually, Wooyoung motivated San enough to get ready. Without the warmth of his best friend next to him, laying on his bed wasn't appealing anymore anyways. So he got up and got dressed to spend what was left of his birthday with their friends.
When he arrived at Hongjoong’s place, he was instantly greeted with all of his friends hugging him and wishing him a happy birthday, telling him how much they love him, knowing that San likes hearing those words
Even Hongjoong, who barely calls his mom to tell her he loves her, was telling San how much he loved him. San couldn’t help but feel warm all over, feeling so loved and cared for.
Wooyoung, Yeosang and Hongjoong immediately left to the kitchen, telling San he isn't allowed to enter under any circumstances, leaving Mingi and Yunho to guard the kitchen and keep him company in the living room.
He was sitting on the couch between Mingi and Yunho, talking about the newest games they were all obsessed with. He missed his friends a lot. He wished he had more opportunities to spend time with all of them together in one place but since they all had different schedules, it was rare for them to manage meeting at once. San’s heart grew in size at the thought of his friends probably clearing their schedules just to spend his birthday with him. He was truly so lucky to have them.
Eventually Hongjoong called Mingi and Yunho to help set up the table. And a few minutes later, the table was full of food that smelled delicious. With all of them sitting around the table, he could see Wooyoung’s eyes shining with anticipation. Taking a second glance at the food, San recognized the dishes that were placed in front of them. They were his favorite dishes that Wooyoung would cook for him from time to time. At the center of the table, he could even see Wooyoung’s infamous special pasta dish.
“I know it’s your favorite,” Wooyoung said from across the table. Maybe it was the lighting in the room or his mind pulling tricks on him, but for a split second he thought he saw Wooyoung blushing.
His heart was beating fast in his chest. Wooyoung did all of this for him.
After an evening full of laughter and amazing food, it was time for Wooyoung and San to leave. But not before he made Yeosang kiss him on the cheek one last time, as a little birthday gift. Yeosang always avoids San’s attempts at physical affection, leaving the younger pouting. San had to use his birthday as an excuse to get all the love and affection that he could.
Wooyoung was definitely tipsy on the way back home, constantly clinging to San, holding his arm close to his chest and giggling in his ear. The sound of his giggle was enough to make San feel like he was soaring.
“Can I sleep with you tonight?” Wooyoung asked. San immediately nodded, not trusting his own voice.
San swore that anyone near him would be able to hear his heart pounding in his chest. In the quiet of the night, his heartbeat was too loud even for his own ears. He wished his heart didn’t react like this to Wooyoung's simple question. San’s apartment was closer, and Wooyoung was a little tipsy, it was just the most logical decision.
But San couldn't help but think about how much he loves the idea of Wooyoung occupying his bed, how much he longs for Wooyoung's warmth.
Sharing a bed had become more frequent ever since Wooyoung’s breakup. They shared a bed before multiple times, but it was usually just for quick naps and purely for sleeping, never in order to give each other comfort, at least not like they do now, or just because they wanted to.
When they reach San’s apartment, Wooyoung seems to have sobered up, suddenly turning quiet. They got ready for bed in silence, and got under the covers quietly. It was only after they laid comfortably in San’s bed facing each other that San decided to talk.
“Is everything alright?” San asked.
Wooyoung shook his head and smiled softly at San, reaching out to touch his cheek. “I was just trying to put what i'm feeling into words”
Wooyoung started to slowly caress San’s cheek, causing his breath to hitch.
“You’re the most important person in my life, do you know that?” Wooyoung said softly.
Something about the quiet of the night and San’s dark room, that was making everything feel heavier. San looked into Wooyoung’s eyes, only seeing sincerity and he felt his heart skip a beat. San didn't know what this all meant, but he still nodded in response. He knew Wooyoung loved him, he had no doubt about that, they were best friends for a reason.
Wooyoung kept caressing his cheek with his thumb, drawing slow circular movements, “I know I haven't been the best friend to you for the past few weeks and i'm sorry for it”
“Don't,” San said, not wanting Wooyoung to think even for a second that he was a burden to him. San couldn’t think straight with the urge to kiss Wooyoung's palm clouding his mind.
“It’s true though, you’ve been worrying so much about me and I–” Wooyoung took a deep breath before continuing to talk “I just wanted today to be all about taking care of you"
San wanted more than anything to just reach out and kiss Wooyoung, finally putting an end to the endless longing he felt in his chest, but before he could do anything reckless, Wooyoung continued talking.
“I want you to know that I'm doing so much better now, and it’s all thanks to you and your support, really” he said while smiling, his eyes looking like little moons as he smiled at San.
“I’m glad” he said while smiling softly at Wooyoung. “Thank you, young-ah, you really know how to take care of me” he said, not trusting himself to open up further than that.
Wooyoung stopped caressing his cheek to lean in and replace the warmth of his hand with his lips, softly kissing San on the cheek. He leaned back to look at San once more, his eyes shining in San’s dark room. San could see his eyes filled with so many emotions, some unreadable, but he saw something more inside Wooyoung’s gaze, something hidden in his eyes.
It looked awfully similar to the way San had begun to look at Wooyoung.
“Let’s go to sleep, okay?” Wooyoung said quietly, his voice only getting quieter. He must be sleepy.
Wooyoung turned so his back was now facing San, grabbing San’s hands from behind him and guiding them around Wooyoung's waist.
“G’night” Wooyoung mumbled, already sounding like he’s about to fall asleep.
San held Wooyoung close to his chest and before he could overthink anything, he planted a kiss on the back of his nape.
What did it all mean?
☁️🌕
Over the next few days, San’s mind was racing, constantly overthinking and making his head hurt .
He just couldn’t understand if his feelings were one sided or if maybe they were reciprocated.
On one hand, he’s almost certain there had always been something more to their friendship, even though it took San until now to realize it.
Maybe Wooyoung was just as dense as him? Though he found that unlikely, considering Wooyoung had more dating experience than San and was more in tune with his emotions in general.
This means– if Wooyoung knew, why didn't he initiate anything? If he knew, then why would he keep dating all of those men during all these years, leaving San to always come to his rescue when they inevitably broke his heart.
If Wooyoung knew, maybe he didn't feel the same way. Maybe Wooyoung knew San’s love could never be enough for him. Maybe that’s what Seonghwa was able to give him. Seonghwa was enough for Wooyoung, unlike San.
He could feel his mind spiraling and he just wanted it to end.
“You told me he broke up with you because of his fears, right?” San asked one night, when they decided to go on their weekly walks around their neighborhoods. If San were to look up, he’s sure he’d see the stars in the sky glowing, creating the illusion they were lighting up the street instead of the street lamps.
But he doesn’t look up at the sky. The brightest star of them all was already walking right next to him.
Wooyoung hummed, bringing him back to his train of thought, and to what made him ask that question to begin with.
“Would you get back together with him, if he told you he’s not afraid of the future anymore?”
His heart was in his throat, already regretting asking that question. But he felt like he just– he just had to do this. San thought that maybe this was his best shot at getting rejected without actually confessing. This way, he could try to repair his broken heart once he realizes he doesn’t stand a chance and begin to move on.
But to his horror, Wooyoung’s reply caught him completely off guard.
“No” Wooyoung said, without a second of hesitation.
It was such a small word, but it held so much meaning for San.
More confused than ever, his heart only started to beat faster.
He still doesn’t know if he has a chance in being more than a friend to Wooyoung. He could feel his head starting to hurt.
“You know, you mentioned once how I thought Seonghwa and I would last forever.” Wooyoung said out of all of the blue, bursting San’s thought bubble.
“Honestly I don't think I did. Is that strange to say?” Wooyoung said as he turned to look at him.
San wasn't quite sure what to say, managing to shake his head in response. His poor heart was threatening to jump out of his ribcage.
“I wanted our relationship to last longer, I really didn’t think it would end that abruptly. but I don’t think I saw him with me until the end, you know?”
San hummed. It stung a little, hearing Wooyoung talk about his lost future with Seonghwa. But regardless, he was always happy hearing Wooyoung’s thoughts, especially with how closed off Wooyoung was in the first weeks after the breakup. Now, he had no issue opening up about it, to San’s relief.
Wooyoung groaned in frustration “It's so hard! how can you just imagine one person being next to you for the rest of your life? that’s too definitive!”
San opened his mouth to reply– before closing it again, the words not leaving his mouth. He hummed as a reply instead, not wanting to open his mouth and say something stupid. Like how he could easily imagine Wooyoung being by his side until he was old and wrinkly.
“Maybe he did me a favor by breaking up. He saw behind the bullshit.”
“Don’t say that, young-ah” he hated when Wooyoung self deprecated himself, always wanting his best friend to feel like he was enough.
Wooyoung shook his head and let out a small giggle, despite their heavy conversation, it sounded bright “I didn’t mean it like that, promise!” he said while smiling, reaching out to squeeze San’s arm lightly.
“I think it was a good thing we broke up, really. I was mostly hurt by how he did it more than anything but honestly? we’re all fucked up humans who try to deal with our own demons and I get it! it’s hard” he said with a small smile, it was kind and understanding.
San admired Wooyoung, he really did. He was proud to see his progress and how far he’d come. He remembers finding Wooyoung lying on his bed all those months ago, how everything felt so hopeless and cold back then.
But now, it was warm, and Wooyoung was smiling, holding so much kindness and understanding in his eyes.
God, he wished he could just kiss him and end his misery.
⛅️✨
It’s been 3 months since Seonghwa and Wooyoung had broken up.
It was the beginning of august now, meaning summer was starting to feel unbearable. Wooyoung and San found themselves locked up in one of their apartments more often than not, binging shows and eating ice cream together.
Today though, San felt like doing something special for Wooyoung.
He was going to pick Wooyoung up from his dance studio, deciding to surprise his friend and keep him company on his bus ride home. He stopped by a bakery he knew Wooyoung really loved that was conveniently located next to his studio and bought Wooyoung’s favorite cake.
Who says you need to wait for somebody’s birthday to buy them cake? San thinks celebrating Wooyoung’s happiness is a good enough reason too!
When Wooyoung spotted San waiting at the entrance of his studio, his entire face lit up and soon enough he found Wooyoung in his arms, almost suffocating him with the force of his embrace.
San scrunched his nose “smelly”
Wooyoung jokingly hit his arm. “Maybe if you don’t want a sweaty best friend in your face you shouldn’t have waited for me at my studio, suck it up!”
San laughed. He didn’t actually mind a sweaty Wooyoung in his arms, he just loved to tease him a little.
In fact, it should worry San just how much he wants a sweaty Wooyoung in his arms.
“What's the special occasion?” Wooyoung asked, as they started to walk to the direction of the nearest bus stop.
“just had an appointment close by, thought I should wait for you” there’s no need for Wooyoung to know just how whipped he actually was. San’s pretty sure he’d been a little too obvious about his feelings lately.
Wooyoung looked at him almost too knowingly and nodded.
The bus was crowded with people, and Wooyoung and San had to stand all cramped up together with a bunch of strangers.
Wooyoung sighed and rested his head underneath San’s chin, while holding onto San’s shoulders, despite the bumpy bus ride and how crowded it was around them. San still wasn’t able to stay calm whenever Wooyoung would seek his affection, his heart beating entirely too fast in his chest again. This time, there was no way Wooyoung couldn’t hear it.
When they reached Wooyoung’s apartment, Wooyoung quickly went to shower. San took that moment to take the cake out of his bag, feeling lucky Wooyoung didn’t ask him anything about it.
When Wooyoung came out of the shower, his breath got taken away from what he saw. Wooyoung's now long raven hair was damp and a little wavy. He was wearing a simple black tank top and small shorts, his skin was so golden, his thighs were bare, and San was sure he was gonna lose his Sanity right then and there.
“What's all this?” Wooyoung asked as he got closer to the kitchen counter.
“I bought you a little something,'' San said simply, trying to calm down. it was actually ridiculous just how weak he was for Wooyoung.
Wooyoung’s eyes glittered with something new inside of them, “that’s my favorite flavor!” he said cheerfully.
“I know. Why do you think I got it in the first place?”
Wooyoung snorted when he noticed the label on the cake “was your appointment near my studio with the baker?”
“Yes, it was urgent,” San said, which caused Wooyoung to giggle.
after eating half of the cake (to be fair, they haven’t really eaten a proper dinner! you can’t sue them), they decided to lay down in Wooyoung’s bed. His bedroom was where the ac was located, and Wooyoung’s bed was actually the comfiest he had ever laid on. Maybe he should move in with Wooyoung so his back will never hurt again in his life.
“Who was your first ever crush?”
Wooyoung asked after a while of them laying in silence, staring at the ceiling. The only noise in the room was coming from Wooyoung’s phone, playing a lo-fi playlist in low volume.
“it was Jongho, you already know that” San said.
As the years went by, San still thought about Jongho from time to time, wondering how he’d been and if he forgave San. it was San’s one and only attempt at a relationship, so of course he still thought about it occasionally.
After so long, he now understands that his feelings for Jongho weren’t as deep as he thought they were. In the beginning, he got excited spending time with Jongho, kissing him in secret under the covers. Maybe he just liked the attention, the fact that he was loved by someone in that way, San isn’t sure.
San was brought back to the present with Wooyoung’s voice. “that’s boringggggg. there’s no way you didn’t have a kindergarten crush or something”
San chuckled. “doesn't matter though, young-ah. I feel like a first crush is more important than that, it’s butterflies in your stomach for the first time, it’s daydreaming about kissing them until it’s the only thing that stays on your mind, it’s different” San said.
Wooyoung hummed, “yeah, I guess you’re right”
Another lo-fi beat started to play from Wooyoung’s phone, changing the atmosphere.
“What about you?” San asked after a while, wondering why Wooyoung even asked him that to begin with.
“Me?” Wooyoung asked dumbfounded, as if he wasn’t expecting San to get curious, too.
“Yeah, who was your first crush?”
Wooyoung chuckled softly, mostly to himself. San turned his head from the ceiling to look at Wooyoung. He was biting his bottom lip anxiously.
Wooyoung turned to face San too. San was overwhelmed with how intense and serious his face was.
“It was actually you,” he said quietly, half whispering.
Wait, what?
his heart thuds wildly in his chest, his heartbeat too loud in his ears, feeling like it jumped out of his chest and it was sitting right next to him on the bed.
San’s shock had to be obvious on his face, or maybe it was because he'd been staring at Wooyoung for so long without saying anything. Wooyoung turned his entire body so he was now lying facing San completely.
“When?” San asked, finally finding the strength to talk.
“Probably a few months after we started talking” Wooyoung said so easily, as if it was the simplest fact.
San honestly stopped breathing five minutes ago and he’s sure he’s not going to survive this much longer.
The atmosphere in the room suddenly felt much more intense and San felt like he was suffocating. He has to lighten the mood somehow, maybe show Wooyoung he’s not weirded out by him having a crush on him so long ago. it was probably short and meaningless, plus it’s all in the past now, right?
It was in the past— and maybe that’s exactly why his heart started to ache again.
He turned on his side so he was fully facing Wooyoung and cleared his throat in an attempt not to sound as weak as he feels right now, “what was it about me that charmed you? Was it my awkward posture and even more awkward personality or was it my over enthusiastic death note theories?”
Wooyoung didn’t laugh like he wanted him to. He didn’t smile and jokingly hit San's arm and called him an idiot, he didn’t even move, just continued staring at him with a serious expression. San was frozen under his gaze.
“You know, you were the first person that didn’t judge me for being me. I wasn’t too much for you, I wasn’t too clingy or too excited or too loud, you accepted me exactly as I am, and you still do”
Wooyoung closed his eyes and let out a small breathy laugh. When he opened his eyes, he was looking at San with the entire galaxy inside of his eyes, a whole new universe that San was ready to be consumed by.
“You weren’t awkward, you were perfect, Sannie. You still are” he said while his eyes were shining. San was too scared to look away, too scared that if he’ll look away, he’ll realize he imagined all of this happening.
“W-why…why haven’t you said anything?” San managed to ask in a quiet voice.
“You lived so far away from me, San,” he laughed dryly, before continuing “I'm clingy, and I crave physical intimacy in order to feel loved. even as your best friend it was too painful sometimes, not being able to be close to you. I knew i’d end up being in pain and probably hurting you too”
Talking about the beginning of their friendship filled San with a strange, nostalgic feeling. when he reminisces about old times he doesn’t think about how painful it was, to be so close to someone who lived so far, only seeing pixels on your phone screen instead of a human being, how much San ached to be with Wooyoung. He wanted to be close to him so much that eventually, he moved as close as he could to him, not wanting to ever be separated again.
San just assumed this is where Wooyoung’s explanation will end, considering they were talking about something from the past. San feels like he can’t even be happy or relieved to know Wooyoung had those feelings, when they most likely faded away a long time ago, while his heart is aching for something more.
Wooyoung continued, “and then you moved here, and everything was so new and exciting and I was terrified of how intensely I felt towards you, and how close you were all of a sudden, I was so so scared"
Wait. Wait wait– what?
Wooyoung giggles, how could he giggle at a time like this!
Wooyoung began laughing louder.
“I don’t think you’re realizing you’ve been speaking your thoughts out loud”
Well, that explains it.
San was brought back to reality when he felt the warm, tender touch of Wooyoung’s hand on his cheek.
This reminds him of his birthday, a few weeks ago. Wooyoung is looking at him with the same sincerity as he did back them. he’s looking at him with stars in his eyes and so much fondness.
“As time went by, I realized we have something so special. you really are the most important person in my life” Wooyoung started to caress his cheek with his thumb, his touch making him feel electricity running through his veins.
“you’re my best friend Sannie, I couldn’t let that go just because I wanted more”
San had been feeling so disoriented this entire time, trying to process the fact that Wooyoung ever had a crush on him, only to be disappointed realizing it’s been ages and that it’s just too late now. but why is Wooyoung making it sound like…like this has been going on for a while.
“So all of this time?” San asked hesitatingly, in a small voice.
Wooyoung nods repeatedly. He continued to caress his cheek, San couldn’t help but lean into his touch, fighting the urge to close his eyes as he leaned into Wooyoung’s touch.
“What about Seonghwa?” San finally closed his eyes, and asked in a quiet voice.
“He was important to me. And honestly? I really needed that. to actually be in a relationship, and learn so much more about myself, too” Wooyoung said. San hummed, he can really understand that.
San opened his eyes to look at Wooyoung. “and what about now?” he asked carefully.
Wooyoung stopped caressing his cheek, but before San could even pout at the loss of Wooyoung’s soothing touch, Wooyoung was slowly leaning closer to him.
“I lied'' Wooyoung said, so close to San’s face, he could feel his breath on his face and it sent shivers all over his body.
“About what?” San whispered.
“When we talked about someone spending the rest of your life with you and I said I find it hard”
San could barely even pay attention to what Wooyoung had said, despite the fact that he was focusing on his lips moving. all he could think about was closing the distance and just—
Wooyoung continues, “When I close my eyes and imagine the future, I can always imagine you being there next to me. In this crazy unpredictable world, you’re a constant in my life. loving you was always so easy”
Oh. Oh.
San’s heart ached , it’s been aching for months now. and for the first time, he felt like he should actually do something about it.
Finally, after months, after years, San leaned in to close the distance between them.
Wooyoung's lips were so incredibly soft, and tasted like the cake they ate earlier.
Wooyoung moved his lips against his, his kisses were soft and tender, like he was pouring so many emotions into them.
He didn’t know kissing could feel like this.
The ache in his chest was finally gone, instead, butterflies replaced it in his stomach, making themselves at home there.
Fuck. San thought to himself. He was kissing Jung Wooyoung. his Wooyoung. He’s pretty sure this is the most tender kiss he’s ever had in his life.
Overwhelmed by the urge to look into Wooyoung's eyes, he stopped the kiss, and looked at Wooyoung’s face.
His hair was getting longer, making Wooyoung’s facial structure look sharper. He was breathtaking. The sight alone made San's heart thud wildly in his chest. That’s his Wooyoung, the Wooyoung he just kissed.
“I've been wanting to do that since we were eighteen” Wooyoung giggled, while smiling shyly at him.
San tucked a strand of hair behind Wooyoung's ear, feeling overwhelmed by emotions.
Like this, so close to Wooyoung’s face, he feels like he can finally and truly look. He admires his cute ears, his cheeks, the stars in his eyes who seem to be shining at him. Finally, he looked down at Wooyoung’s lips. He focused on the beauty mark of the bottom of his lip and without even thinking twice he leaned in to kiss Wooyoung again, this time with less grace and tenderness.
They kissed more passionately, the obscene sound of their lips and tongues moving against each other was starting to have an effect on San, his pants feeling a little too tight right now.
Thinking about the cute beauty mark that’s been driving him crazy, he sucked on his bottom lip, which resulted in Wooyoung releasing a breathy moan.
God, Wooyoung was driving him wild, he never thought kissing could feel like this.
When he pulled back, Wooyoung’s lips were bright red, shining from his spit. Wooyoung bit his bottom lip while staring at San's lips.
“Wow,” Wooyoung said.
“I can't believe we just kissed,'' San said, more to himself than anything.
Wooyoung started to gently trace his fingers on San’s face. starting from his eyebrows, to his nose, to his lips. “Get used to it” Wooyoung said right before leaning in again, connecting their lips together, not waiting a second before pushing his tongue in San’s mouth. The wet touch of Wooyoung's tongue against his own was enough to make San moan into the kiss.
San had no doubt tonight was going to be a long night.
🌤️✨
Apparently dating your best friend, who you had known for 6 years, didn’t make your life turn upside down.
If anything, it surprised San just how normal everything felt.
San understands why it was so easy for him to confuse his feelings for Wooyoung over the years, since they just felt so natural, and everything with Wooyoung just always felt easy.
It was easy to reach out and kiss him, or intertwine their fingers, just as it was easy for them to meet up to eat ice cream and watch films together, like Brokeback Mountain. it was so easy to leave bruises with his mouth on Wooyoung’s golden skin, just as it was easy for them to laugh so hard at each other’s stupid jokes until one of them would start embarrassingly crying.
Loving Wooyoung is the easiest thing he’s done in his life.
And more than anything, San’s heart can finally rest while he’s holding Wooyoung in his arms, knowing he can finally, finally, give Wooyoung exactly the kind of love he had always wanted, had always dreamt of. Finally, he could give Wooyoung the world, and make sure his best friend won’t experience another heartbreak ever again, as long as Wooyoung wanted him.
☀️✨
“Noona, I have some news,” San said over the phone, while talking to his sister.
they’re laying on San’s bed, Wooyoung is leaning against the pillows while San is sitting between his legs, with his back pressed against his chest. Wooyoung had been lazily tracing patterns with his fingers on San’s arms, making San melt into a puddle (or well, just lean closer to Wooyoung and wishing he never would let him go)
“What is it? ” His sister said over the phone, San had her on speaker so both Wooyoung and he could hear her.
“It's about Wooyoung. we— we actually started dating” San said. He was nervous and excited to talk about it out loud. It still feels so surreal.
“Well, duh. isn’t that a given considering you’ve been in a relationship for like five years now? ”
“Wait, you're telling me you thought Wooyoung and I were dating since we met?” he asked in disbelief.
“Yes? ” she said, San can hear the smirk in her voice, he can’t believe this.
Wooyoung was giggling behind him, his chest moving behind him, causing San to move with him.
“I can’t believe your sister actually thought we were dating, that’s amazing”
“Holy shit, you guys weren’t actually dating all this time? what the fuck, San! ”
Well, this probably explains why his sister asked every single Christmas why he wasn't bringing Wooyoung over.
“No, we weren’t. but yeah, we’re dating for real now”
“Okay, thanks for letting me know” she said dryly.
San whispered so only Wooyoung can hear “Damn telling her wasn’t even fun, I thought she’d have a bigger reaction”
Wooyoung giggled and kissed behind San’s ear.
“Hey noona,” Wooyoung said loudly.
“Yes, Wooyoungie? ” her voice turned softer, she always had the weakest spot for Wooyoung, apparently it ran in the family.
“I love your brother a lot, and I'm gonna take really good care of him, okay?”
“I have no doubt you will, Wooyoungie ”
After she hung up, San groaned out loud “how embarrassing!”
Wooyoung giggled “I find it really adorable actually, were you always just so gone for me she just assumed that we’re dating?”
“Okay we’re actually calling your mom next. if my sister thought we were dating I bet your mother thought we’re engag— Wooyoung! stop biting me”
