Work Text:

Leon closed the door quietly behind him. Ashley was sleeping in the room over after all. Damn these cabins for only having two bedrooms. Though he figured this was a small village, so it made some sense. But still, that meant he had to share a room with Luis which he guessed wasn’t all that bad, but Leon could feel a flush creeping along his face as he turned around and watched Luis wriggle out of his jacket and white button-up while sitting on the large bed.

Leon turned his face away and mumbled something under his breath. “Hmm?” Luis hummed questioningly, brown eyes looking up and glinting in the low light. Leon turned back, gaze catching a glimpse at the toned muscles now exposed. “It’s nothing,” Leon muttered. Luis didn’t question him any further, instead opting to pat the sheets next to him, and Leon walked over to sit. “You want the left or right side?” Luis teased a bit, but Leon ignored it, blue eyes traveling to the door.

Luis followed his gaze, frowning a bit in realization. He placed a gentle hand on Leon’s shoulder, and the blonde could feel the rings that always hugged his fingers through his shirt and shivered. “It’s ok, Sancho,” Leon smiled slightly at the nickname, “we’ve barricaded the doors and windows as best we could. If someone breaks in, we’ll hear it and be ready.”

Leon sighed but nodded his head anyways. He stood up and removed the gear wrapped all over his body, discarding it on the nightstand before he too removed his shirt, feeling the cold air hit his chest and the scars etched in from when he had top surgery. He nudged Luis’s foot. “Move to your side of the bed,” he huffed out, and Luis complied with a roll of his eyes, crawling over to his side before slipping under the sheets. Leon slid in next to him and turned his back toward Luis, the other doing the same. The agent turned the lamp off.

It was dark now with a static silence, but Leon couldn’t close his eyes. He couldn’t sleep. Paranoia kept his eyes open and flickering. Leon exhaled shakily.

Luis couldn’t sleep either, as Leon heard him rustle in the sheets. Then there came a soft, “Leon, are you awake?”

“Yeah.”

Leon craned his neck to look over his shoulder, only to be met with Luis staring back at him, biting the inside of his cheek. The gears in his head were turning- Leon could tell. “Do you uh,” Luis tried to chuckle, but it came out broken, “do you think I’ll make it out of this alive?” Leon raised his eyebrows. “Why do you ask?” Luis sighed at the question before turning onto his back, hands clasped together and over his chest. “I’ve led a pretty shitty life. I’m sure you know, no? Karma is a bitch. Perhaps she’ll find me before I can fix all of the messes I’ve made. Umbrella… las plagas…” his voice trailed to silence. Leon shifted onto his back as well, staring intently at Luis. Luis took it as a sign to continue.

“I never wanted to hurt people… After my grandpa died and I became an orphan, I just wanted to make a name for myself. I was smart, but that fell into the hands of the wrong people. How- how was I supposed to know my research would be used for all of these things..?” his voice quivered slightly as he waved his hand, “I didn’t want this to happen.” Leon mulled over the words that Luis poured his heart and soul into. Luis wanted to change. Leon knew that. He carried a heavy sin on his shoulder.

“Do you have any regrets, Leon?”

The agent’s eyes widened before they relaxed again. He opened his mouth to speak but quickly shut it. Trying again, he said: “I do.” Luis fiddled with his fingers nervously and looked over. “Do you want to talk about them?” Leon hesitated for a moment, letting the silence sit until it became uncomfortable. “I regret not being able to save the people I cared about,” he finally answered, shifting over completely to his side so he was now face to face with Luis. Memories of Raccoon City flooded back to him. He had been so naive then but still pure and joyful. Leon was rarely happy anymore.

“And-“ shit, Leon hated how emotional his voice suddenly got. “I can’t risk losing anyone else, Luis. You and Ashley have to survive, or I’ll never forgive myself. I still can’t forgive myself for what happened at Raccoon City all those years ago,” Leon murmured as he felt a hot tear slip down his face. “Shit- sorry-“ he reached his arm up to wipe it away before Luis abruptly snatched his arm to stop him. “Leon,” he began, and the agent could hear the concern in his name, “it’s ok. I promise you it’s ok. It’s not your fault. I uh- just come here.” Leon didn’t care anymore as he moved in closer to Luis, laying himself on top of the other man’s chest, resting his head in the crook of his shoulder while Luis wrapped his arms around him in a tight hug.

Leon didn’t say anything as the occasional tear slipped down his face and onto Luis’ skin. He felt comfort in the other’s embrace, his worry melting away. Luis lifted a hand and traveled to his hair, running his deft fingers through Leon’s blonde locks while his other arm staying wrapped around him. Leon nuzzled his face deeper into his neck, not minding the way Luis’ beard tickled his skin.

“It’s not your fault, Leon. I’m sure you did all that you could,” Luis murmured into his ear, and Leon lifted his head to look at him for a moment, eyes wet and slightly puffy. He didn’t say anything as he wrapped his arms around Luis and then moved to rest his head on the other’s chest. “I’m not going anywhere either,” Luis added. Leon bit his lip until it hurt.

“Maybe..” the agent began with a whisper, “after all this, you could work with me. It would help you to amend.” Luis hummed something softly. “If your agents won’t be pissed off about it, then perhaps.” Leon chuckled slightly and held Luis closer. Luis closed his eyes and leaned back on the pillows. “It’s alright, Leon. We’re ok in here. We’re safe.” Leon just nodded.

Luis shifted up for a moment, leaning over so he could kiss Leon lightly on the top of his head. The agent sat up, looking at Luis with wide eyes, which made the Spaniard chuckle. “Maybe after all this… I should take you on a date, hmm..?” Luis hummed, and Leon’s blue eyes softened. He laid back down on Luis’ chest, face flushing a bit. “I wouldn’t mind that,” he whispered against his skin. Luis smiled.

With warmth and comfort flowing around him, Leon, for once, fell asleep with ease. Luis held him gently in his arms as he too slipped into the darkness. The two fell asleep, holding each other with promises they wanted to fulfill floating in the air.
