Work Text:
Poe's head was rested on the plain wooden table which was placed in the furthest corner of the library. He liked that the bookshelves were gathered in a circle around the table, isolating him from everything else entirely. Through the nearby half opened window there was city noise coming in and invading the quiet space. The noise was slowly driving him insane, like he wasn't stressed enough already.
Being all squiggly from sitting all day was infuriatingly annoying, whenever he stood up he almost collapsed and had to sit back down, and then eventually, stand up again slowly. Going to the doctor was not to his interest, since it would take way too much of his study time away. But again, he was sitting there, not really doing much.
His final exams were coming up and the motivation for studying just didn't occur at that exact moment. His pen kept tapping the empty paper in front of him, lingering at the same place without moving anywhere. His head kept resting on the table, not being able to move an inch. Not like he was in deep despair, yet his unproductiveness was slowly driving the brunet insane.
At the same time, it wasn't always like that. Sometimes the motivation would just randomly enter his brain and make him write and study enormous amounts of papers. Currently though, Poe was just too tired to think about all the stuff that was yet to be done. The endless piles of books didn't want to end and he just wanted it to be finished already. He couldn't move though. He couldn't lift his head and focus on the information, basically making it hopeless. His thoughts kept going in all the other directions than they should have been.
Poe was not the one to procrastinate or anything, but he was slowly falling asleep in the warm library, full of students studying for their exams and whispering to eachother. He knew he should be aswell, but if he just closed his eyes for a moment...
Once his eyes were closed, all of his senses came to a stop. He could finally rest. He could finally rest if there wasn't a hand tapping his shoulder, eagerly trying to awake him.
Slowly, the messy haired brunet lifted his tired head to be met with a pair of glasses in front of him. Ranpo waved his hand before his eyes in attempt to get the others attention. “You're awake! I thought you passed out for a second. Are you okay?” There was something in his eyes that drew Poe to him.
Poe sighed and mumbled something while rubbing his eyes in an attempt of waking up completely. “Ranpo-kun... you startled me there, I was just taking a quick little break,” said Poe, now a bit more clearly but with an obviously still worn out look. Ranpo's worried eyes met his, making him smile faintly at his friend. “Please just finish for today and continue tommorow. It's not good to overwork yourself,” started his worried companion, pulling at his sleeve like a little kid wanting him to move. Poe nodded no as he still had so much work to finish. The assignments weren't going to do them by themselves and he really didn't want to procrastinate even more.
Ranpo raised his voice just a tiny bit, being fed up with Poe's answer, “Come on... Being stubborn won't make you any less tired.” He tried pulling him up again, but to no success.
“No...I'm fine, I promise you. Just have to do this one more assignment and then I'll-” Ranpo suddenly turned the brunet's chair around and held his shoulders. “I'm taking you home. You're neglecting yourself, have you even drank anything today at all?” He did in fact, not. “I...was going to...”
Poe had no more words, he just sat there, giving up on studying, as complying Ranpo was never a very good idea. He knew that his friend only wanted the best, and always gave the best to him. He was really grateful to have someone like that pop up in his life. His mouth formed a smile once again, and he managed to pull himself up.
As soon as he stood up, he almost collapsed again. Ranpo immediately caught him and sat him down again. “Okay, let's do this slowly. I'll get you a glass of water, just wait here.” Ranpo spoke out, noticing that his friend was dizzy. He tapped his shoulder in reassurance and hurried to the nearby bathroom.
Poe sighed. He really wasn't planning on being a nuisance to Ranpo, he had exams as well! The difference between him and Ranpo was, well, one of them did not need to study at all for his examinations and tests. The other though, always tried his hardest to score as high as possible and was in result always stressing about everything.
It didn't necessarily bother Poe, but he did wish he had it that easy as well. Ranpo had no imperfections to him, he was the ideal person, never failing to meet anyone's expectations. At least, that's how he saw it. Sometimes he felt like some kind of a fan of him, always jumping around him. So in that case, it was weird that Ranpo was the person helping him.
All the thoughts made his brain hurt a bit more than it already hurt so he decided to discard the feelings and focus on getting himself together. Not too soon after he could already hear his friend's footsteps quickly approaching. As he turned his head, Ranpo was already standing in front of him, gasping for air from running. He lent him a bottle of water. “Drink.”
Poe didn't comply and drank almost the entire bottle. Ranpo had a certain look on his face, it was saying 'I knew it.' “Thank you, Ranpo-kun! I'm feeling better now, are you sure you still want me to go home for today?” questioned Poe, having an unsure expression planted on his face, but the other persisted.
“I will take you home and you will rest, if you like it or not,” he grinned at his tired looking friend and lent him his hand. Poe's breath hitched at the action, since it was quite out of the ordinary for the genius Ranpo to do such a thing. Well, it wasn't that surprising but it still surprised him.
Poe couldn't help but return the smile. He took the others hand and pulled himself from the chair slowly. Now he wasn't feeling as dizzy as before, so at least he could walk. Even if he was feeling better, Ranpo made sure that he couldn't fall by holding his hand and keeping an eye on him while they walked out of the library, into the noisy street.
Ranpo had guessed that Poe didn't want to walk all the way to his apartment, so he pulled out an old telephone out of his pocket (that he refused to replace already, even though It was already cracked) and called a taxi. While he was doing all that, he never let go off of Poe's hand. He even made sure to not let go, he couldn't let his friend fall again, obviously.
Holding Ranpo's hand was a new thing for him, usually he wasn't the one to exactly like physical contact, but it was different in this case. He didn't mind it all, infact, he found it kind of nice and comforting. The warmth coming from Ranpo's hand was making him feel safe from the outside, safe from the scary crowds that were walking through the loud streets. Like the others presence was protecting him from the curius or bored looks of the people walking by.
The taxi eventually arrived to their location, and just after the door opened, Poe immediately jumped in. Ranpo giggled to himself and entered the vehicle himself, leaving the loud street behind as he closed the door. After explaining to the taxi driver their destination, Ranpo layed back on the shiny black car seat. He looked adorable just sitting there, thought Poe. But Poe always thought that Ranpo looked adorable.
His eyelids were getting heavy again, making him lean onto his shorter friend. Ranpo didn't seem to mind the others touch, as he wasn't moving away. Maybe he even got closer to him. Poe wouldn't know, as he was already half and soon fully asleep. In that state, he only felt a soft touch on his forehead before finally leaving conscience and drifting away into the dream world.
