Even Through Time

Summary:

Jo Carter was never ever going to live up to her sisters glory, so what was the point? One night on a bridge and accepting a strangers help leads her on adventure and to a happiness she could never have dreamed for herself.

This is somewhat inspired by a TikTok POV I watched years ago and unfortunately I cannot recall the creator to credit them.

Chapter 1: Loki

Chapter Text

November 23, 1940 Two AM

Loki walked alone along the quiet streets of London. He usually found Midgard to be boring and infantile, but London? He liked London, the drizzly weather, the regal culture, and surprisingly the British Museum. He was never really sure why this place called to him, but every once in a while when he just needed to get away from all the tension of Asgard, he came to London.

It was nearly two in the morning and the streets were empty. The clocktower was dark to avoid lighting the way from the british enemies during the blitz. Even though it was dark Loki liked to admire the tower for a while whenever he came to Midgard. He ambled his way along the Thames and began to cross over Westminster Bridge. Almost halfway across Loki began to slow. Was that singing he heard? He looked around and there, on the other side of the road a girl sat on the rail of the bridge looking down at the freezing water, and she was humming.

The melody was haunting and sad, and Loki inherently understood what this Midgardian was planning. It was none of his business why should he care? Their lives were fleeting and short anyway. He began to walk again but her humming became singing and the pain and sorrow in her voice shot right to his heart. As if he had lost control of his body he began to cross the road towards her slowly and quietly not to frighten her from her precarious position. Walking towards her Loki began to make out her profile, there was only the light from the moon but he could see dark curls and a round pale face with tears streaming down. She looked so young, what in Odin's name could a girl this young be so sorrowful for? Curiosity got the better of him, or at least that's what he told himself as he spoke.

“Seems an odd place to admire the river from, pet. A bit adventurous for such a cold night don’t you think?”

Her head whipped towards him as her singing suddenly stopped. Her eyes were red rimmed, and wild, and in the moonlight he saw they were the most beautiful shade of green Loki had ever seen. She didn’t say anything or take her eyes from him as she swung her trousered legs back over the railing but she didn’t stand.

“Well, that is slightly better.” He smiled softly but the girl made no move and said nothing, just stared at him. “Might I ask what it was you were singing? It sounded divine.” He took a step closer. The girl shifted away from him but her eyes softened a little, losing some of their sadness.

“I don’t know.” She replied quietly, looking down at the ground as she stood from the rail.

“How do you not know the song you were singing?” He asked, cocking his head to the side curiously and leaning against the same rail she held on to a few feet away.

“It’s a lullaby my mother used to sing. It's been so long since I’ve heard her sing it that I don't think I have all the words right.” She replied as she turned to look back out over the cold river.

“Shame, I quite like it. Maybe you could teach me what parts you do know?” He asked chuckling

She turned her head toward him slowly. She stared silently for so long Loki thought she wasn’t going to answer but then she said, “What are you doing?”
