I’ve Got Sunshine

Summary:

Direct sequel to My Girl. Jackie, Hyde, and Heather officially become a family.

Chapter 1: Purple Rain

Chapter Text

“That is not your color,” Jackie said as she dropped off a bag with take-out burgers on the nearby table.

“And who’s fault is that?” Hyde asked trying to rub away the bits of purple paint stuck to his hands.

“I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about,” Jackie flipped her hair and began sorting out their food. “Why on would you be painting Little Miss Pink’s new room purple?” Her voice was too sickly sweet.

“You know exactly why?”

She turned back smiling, “I’d still like to hear it.

Steven sighed in resignation; this was his life now. He was happy about it, but sometimes having his two chicks gang up on him really knocked him down a peg.

“You showed Heather our prom picture and now she’s obsessed with purple and she wants her room to match her mom’s dress. Are you happy?”

Jackie threw her arms around his neck.

“Ecstatically.”

She kissed him so hard she nearly knocked him off his balance.

Steven pulled away, “As much as I’m enjoying this if you don’t want to match the walls we might need to relocate and almost every room has something going on.”

“I can wait. Besides the food is getting cold.”

Steven went off into the bathroom to scrub his hands as clean as he could get them before returning to his fiancée.

They hadn’t moved much into the house yet; it had taken a little longer than he’d liked to close on the house but they finally had the keys, and he was working on it in his spare time so they didn’t have to move into a project.

“Did you take Heather shopping yet?” he asked.

“Yep, we hit the mall and she was a trooper. We got her all the new bedding pieces she asked for and a little rug to go with it.”

“Let me guess, it’s all purple?”

“I talked her down to a purple and white pattern. It would have been so much purple.”

Hyde laughed. “It’s better than the pink your room used to be.”

Jackie didn’t rise to the bait.

“Red said he’d come and help me hang up shelves.”

“I can’t wait to see it. And Heather will love it because you did it for her.”

“It’s a pretty simple birthday present,” Steven shrugged it off, “I can’t imagine any six-year-old wanting new sheets but whatever floats her boat.”

“She’s going to flip when she sees what you’ve done with her new room.”

“I hope so,” Hyde said. He was proud of all the work he’d put into the house knowing it was for his family. But there was something about knowing how happy Heather would be.

After she saw the photo, Heather wanted to see the dress. Jackie pulled it out and let her try it on for a few minutes before storing it back in its preservation box. Ever since then, the formerly pink princess graduated to purple.

Hyde never realistically thought he’d have a kid, but being the dad of a little princess was never something he could have expected. The truth was she had him wrapped around her finger better than Jackie ever had and that was saying something.

She was just cheerful light. Everyone adored her.

Especially her new dad.
