A serving too big

Summary:

Being the designated cook of the house was something Roier never minded, he enjoyed it even. Remembering the compliments and smiles from his family as they feast onto his homemade meals, he would smile and take a bite himself.

But now with him alone once again, he wasn't so sure if he could adjust to a life where he would only cook for one.

Work Text:

It's been weeks since then.

He has built a few smaller projects to adjust himself, celebrating within each finished project while preparing himself for bigger ideas.

He hasn't been resting well in all honesty, only ever really taking short naps to recharge before moving back up to gather materials and explore for a bit.

He doesn't think he has touched the kitchen area of his old home either, he recalls a few dishes that need washing but never came around to do so, Jaiden most times have done them. But he find that building is more important than that at the moment.

Speaking of his friend, she hasn't been around lately. He wasn't even sure if anyone else had heard from her at all these days. He just hopes she's doing okay and not in some sort of exile that he knew Slimecicle was in, and he hasn't seen that man in months. Roier would like to see Jaiden soon, maybe catch up on whatever they're doing. Maybe she can give more ideas for the city as well.

Cellbit and Richarlyson had visit him a few times to see how he was, sometimes there was Bad, sometimes it was someone else he never had expected to go their way to check up on him.

"Have you been eating well?" "I've been eating avocado toast," "You haven't eaten actual meals?"

He shakes his head in response and moves on. He didn't think he would need to eat a proper meal to survive, he was doing just fine. And cooking felt more like a chore than something he enjoyed as a pass time when the house used to hold more than one person.

Cellbit would shake his head back in disappointment but doesn't push him any further. Richarlyson would share a few words through his sketchbook before they move on to discuss about something else.

After a few days, he decides to rest. Sitting down the dining chair as he just... sits. The silence had become something he was steadily adjusting to, once the house that used to hear the sounds of small patters of a child running around, the sound of fluttering wings that would sometimes chime through, and laughter and singing that always occupied the empty spaces of this home.

Roier hums to himself, some song that he remembers singing out loud before with his family as the sun rises to call for another day. He sighs and stands up, walking to the storage area to scavenge for bread and avocado to feast on once more.

He was left with his hands empty. The sound of items being moved around as he searches through every chests and barrels. It had only been a few days, did he seriously eat all of their supply of bread and avocado?

He groans, remembering that he hasn't grown any wheat recently to even make bread to spare him the whole day. Through every crop and spices he finds, he cannot find any wheat.

He was left to make something more complex now. Something he hasn't done in a while. He sighs and assures himself. It's okay, cooking was something he had always enjoyed. Maybe it's time to bring that pleasure back. And so he finds whatever crops and proteins around, even being able to toss out a few soiled ones in the trash as his hands grab ahold to see what he finds good to add.

In the end he grabs around 5 ingredients, going through his old cooking book and finds a meal that he has grown used to making. Pizza. Somewhere in his mind begins to ache at the thought of someone who used to love this meal but he quickly pushes it aside to think of the cooking process.

Roier begins, mind distracted as his hands move like clockwork. Grabbing utensils left and right as he sets himself to cooking mode. And for a while as he was kneading the dough, he smiles. The aroma of the combined ingredients definitely made him realized what he had been missing out since dedicating to only avocado toast.

He lets himself handle it like it was second nature, placing sauce and the toppings he had chose before grabbing plates and knives to place on the table. And once he places the pizza onto the cooker, he even found himself make some random side dishes on the side.

Taking the pizza out, his smile even grows wider at the sight of the meal and he moves it to place it down the serving plate but before he even does so, he looks at the plates on the dining table.

Three plates and three cups that do not match one another, just like how it used to be set up.

He pauses for a moment, his smile quickly fading as it did appearing and he stands there for a while with the pizza in hand. And only when he looks down at the homemade pizza that he had realized he made it a size too big for just one person. It was a serving for three.

He places it down the table and feels his appetite go missing. He only looks at the set up of the dining table before even registering that he wasn't as well adjusted as he thought he would be. He exhales in disappointment, but what can he do about it now? It was more than a clear sign that he was missing his family. He wished he stayed away from the kitchen.

The sink was now filled with dirty dishware that he had used through the process of cooking. A sight Jaiden would have gasped on before moving quick to clean it up, scolding Roier while doing so. Even Bobby would scold him too before helping as much as a child would, given the task to wipe each dishware dry before handing it to Roier, who places it back to it's right place.

He was sure that if he wasn't so depressed right now he would've shoved every item off the dining table to express what terrible feeling he had felt since that realization that he was all alone again.

But even if he was to do it, the blue sippy cup and the purple stained glass would have stopped him from doing so.
