What Will You Give Me?

Summary:

School is out for summer after junior year and Stiles is excited to spend his days with Derek, who may be more than just his best friend.

Notes:

This is for Sterek Fests Summer 2023, Week One: School is out for summer! Also for my Sterek Bingo, the High School AU square.

Work Text:

The sound of the bell ringing was sweet music to Stiles’s ears. He practically sprang out of his seat, ignoring whatever Finstock was hollering after the group of rowdy high schoolers streaming out of his classroom, now free from the confines of high school for a few months.

Junior year was finally over.

Stiles bounded down the hallway and out into the sun, running across the parking lot to where he’d parked his Jeep. He threw his backpack in the open back window before flinging himself across the hood, laying across it with his arms stretched wide. He closed his eyes to relax in the sunlight, passively listening to the giddy chatter of his fellow peers as they flooded out of the building and dispersed.

A shadow fell across Stiles’s face.

“If you lay there much longer, you’re gonna turn into a lobster - and I’ll never hear the end of it.”

Stiles opened one eye to glare at Derek, who was grinning at him. Stiles huffed, closing his eyes and adjusting his position. The hood of his Jeep wasn’t quite as comfortable as he’d wanted it to be.

“I won’t turn into a lobster, not when I have you ready to block the sun for me like my own personal beach umbrella.”

Even though Stiles’s eyes were closed, he knew Derek rolled his eyes in response. Stiles listened to Derek shuffle around, throwing his own backpack in the back of the car with Stiles’s. Derek opened one of the car doors and there was some rustling before Stiles heard a jingling of a keyring.

Stiles jumped off of the hood, ready for the well-worn argument.

“Don’t you even think about it, Hale,” Stiles said, channeling his dad as best he could and pointing a finger at Derek.

Derek just smirked at him, twirling Stiles’s car keys around his finger. “What are you gonna do about it?” he challenged as he hopped into the driver’s seat, slamming the door shut before Stiles could reach for it. Derek hit the lock button and put the keys in the ignition.

The front window was rolled down two, maybe three inches, so Stiles stuck his hand as far into the space as he could and flapped his fingers uselessly in an attempt to stop Derek. “Nobody drives my Jeep! You know this! Nobody! Not even YOU!”

Derek was laughing as he jiggled the steering wheel side to side, dancing a bit in the driver’s seat as Stiles struggled, but he didn’t turn the ignition or put the car in gear. They both knew Derek would never do anything Stiles didn’t want him to do, but Derek couldn’t help the teasing.

“What will you give me to not drive away in your precious car and leave you here all by your lonesome?” Derek asked, eyeing Stiles teasingly through the glass. Stiles’s hand flapped once more before he pulled it out of the window, crossing his arms over his chest.

“What do you want?” Stiles asked, one eyebrow raised skeptically.

Derek eyed him, looking him up and down slowly. Stiles’s skin goose-pimpled in response to the attention and he was grateful that Derek was too far away to notice.

Apparently coming to a conclusion, Derek unlocked the car door, shoving it open and hitting Stiles with it, who was too slow to get out of the way. Derek slid across to the passenger side of the car as Stiles climbed in.

“Take me to the diner, your treat,” Derek said simply.

Stiles rolled his eyes. It wasn’t like they weren’t planning to go to the diner anyways, but he supposed he could pay for Derek’s curly fries.

“You didn’t have to threaten to drive my baby. If you wanted me to take you on a date, you just had to say so,” Stiles said sassily to cover the sudden heat he was feeling in his chest and he turned on the car.

Derek didn’t offer a quick retort to brush off Stiles’s teasing, like he’d expected.

When he looked over at Derek, Stiles was surprised to see him blushing. Stiles gulped, wondering if this would be the breaking point between them. He felt like things - emotions - had been bubbling under the surface of their friendship for months… was now the time that it would boil over?

“Stiles,” Derek finally said, meeting Stiles’s gaze head-on with a confidence that Stiles was really turned on by, “would you take me on a date?” Stiles was shocked by Derek’s bluntness. He froze, his own cheeks turning red - and not from the sun.

When Stiles didn’t reply immediately, he saw, as if in slow motion, Derek second guess himself. “I mean, only if you want it to be a date, of course. Sorry, I’m just in a really good mood - I mean, we’re seniors now and it’s summer, and it’s our last summer in Beacon HIlls, and I just want to hang out with you all the time, if you want, and if you’d like to go on a date, that would be great, but if not it doesn’t have to be a da-”

Stiles slapped his hand over Derek’s mouth to stop the babbling. Derek’s eyes widened, realizing the babbling that he’d just spurted.

“I think I’ve rubbed off on you, and not in a sexy way,” Stiles said with a slight tease, “because that was some serious word vomit.” He moved his hand away from Derek’s mouth before continuing. “Derek, of course I’d like to go on a date with you. You’re my best friend, and I’m pretty sure I’ve been in love with you for years, so I just want you to know what you’re getting yourself into before-”

This time Derek interrupted Stiles, but it wasn’t with his hand. He leaned across the car to cover Stiles’s mouth with his own in a slightly awkward kiss, seeing that Stiles was mid-word and his mouth was open.

They got with the picture pretty quickly, though, shifting their heads slightly so that their lips fit together more comfortably. One of Derek’s hands came up to cup Stiles’s face and Stiles scooted across the bucket seat and reached out to slide his hand onto Derek’s thigh, both of them groaning as their tongues danced for the first time.

“Yeah, GET IT, GUYS!” Stiles heard outside the car. They broke the kiss to see Erica walking by, giving them a double thumbs up. “It’s about damn time!” she yelled before Boyd pulled her away.

Stiles laughed, looking back to Derek. His lips were pink and slightly swollen, and he had the cutest dazed look on his face. Stiles couldn’t stop smiling, and he squeezed Derek’s leg as he leaned in to kiss him again, this time short and sweet.

“It is about time, isn’t it?” Stiles said simply.

Derek grinned in response, nodding. “I can’t imagine wanting to do anything this summer other than date you.”
