The weather was pleasant, as the sun was shining brightly, while wind was nice and warm. White, fluffy clouds drifted across the clear, blue sky. Perfect weather for treasure hunting, somebody would say. Somebody means Rena Ryuugu who was happily running through trash piles and looking for any cute treasures.
Meanwhile, Keiichi was lying... Exactly, where? Yeah, at the dumping site, while he was waiting for his friend to finish her search. He was sunbathing in the sunshine, but his rest was interrupted by a loud voice.
"Keiichi-kun! Help!"
The boy turned to see Rena crushed by some garbage. Without hesitation, he ran to help her. Finally, with all his strength he lifted the gubbins so that the girl could go out.
"Thank you..." With his help, Rena finally stood up as she brushed the dust off from her clothes.
"You always have to get in trouble," he grunted.
"I'm sorry, but if Keiichi-kun is with me, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about!" Ryuugu replied cheerfully with a small wink.
Keiichi laughed slightly and ruffled his friend's hair.
"Now you should come to help me though, quickly!" Rena grabbed his hand and drew him to the specified direction.
Together they pulled out some medium-sized, strange-looking, stuffed animal.
"Isn't it adorable? Isn't?" She asked enthusiastically, taking the thing in her hands and showing it to her friend.
"I'm not sure... Looks rather weird to me." Keiichi replied, carefully looking at the find from all directions.
"That’s not true, it's so cute!" Rena started hugging the stuffed animal, while rubbing it to her cheek.
"How can some trash be cute?" Maebara asked unfazed, smiling half-heartedly.
"You are mean, for me it's treasure! All this place is amazing and full of valuable things." Keiichi's expression didn't change in the slightest but Rena continued nevertheless. "Time you spend looking and wondering what kind of kyuute things you will happen to find. That's what makes it so much fun, even if you don't find anything."
"Well, If you say so..." For Keiichi the dump was only a dump, he didn't think this place is so appealing. On the contrary, he didn't think his time here was boring though.
"Hauu, you don't seem convinced..." Rena dazed as she started wondering, what she can do for him to change his mind. "I have an idea! I will go to my house for some food, so we can have a picnic here!"
Keiichi thought a while before he nodded his head.
"Good idea! Should I go with you to help..." Before he could end his sentence, Rena was already on the other side of the dumping site and waved her hand at him.
"No need! I will be right back!" Keiichi was shocked at how fast his friend can move. He saw her speed of light when she was in the kawaii mode plenty of times, but it was still as amusing. All the more that she was running through the trash.
That’s Rena all over, no matter how much time you spend with her she is still full of surprises. Keiichi thought, smiling gently to himself and closing his eyes.
After a while Rena returned, holding a stack of boxes wrapped in a cloth.
"Look here, I brought a bit of dishes. Also tea and cookies. Come, help me settle this!"
Together they put out a picnic blanket and spread it on a decommissioned vehicle's room. Then various coloured lunch boxes were placed one after the other on top of the plastic sheet. After finishing, they sprawl out here and started eating.
"That’s delicious, I could kill for one of Rena's cooking!" Keiichi shouted happily, before shoving another hamburger into his mouth.
Rena chuckled a little. "That’s a terrible thing to say, but I'm happy. I am!"
"Besides, this tea is so good! It tastes way better than any barley tea I have got at home. How I should put it-it's like they smell different or something."
"That’s the normal kind. You just put pack in a teapot and boil it to get the flavor." Rena answered, before taking a sip of her tea as well.
"Oh, boiling it must be the secret! We just dump cold water in and put it in the fridge. I guess you don't get the flavor if you don't heat it up first."
Keiichi must admit he enjoyed the time he spent here. Treasure hunting wasn't as boring as he thought it would be. Well, spending time with Rena was always fun, wasn't it?
They sat here eating and talking for a long time as the sun started setting.
"Rena, look! The sunset is pretty!" Keiichi, getting even more excited, pointed.
They both stared on this immense sunset, listening to the gentle cries of cicadas and simply enjoying together this peaceful moment.
"Indeed, It looks charming," Rena whispered, couldn't take her eyes away from this marvelous view.
Keiichi looked back at Rena and smirked.
"Is it as charming as Rena though?" he questioned her flirtatiously, without taking his eyes away from her. "...Nope, that would obviously be impossible."
Keiichi was enticipated her to get all nervous and flustered, as she was always after his teasing. ...This time he was wrong though.
Suddenly, he felt something soft against his cheek.
It takes him a few moments to register what just happened, but when he does, his face burns more brightly than ever.
Keiichi's eyes went wide and his mind went blank.
Rena pulled away, a gentle smile and light blush visible on her face.
"Thank you for everything, Keiichi-kun. I'm really glad I could spend time with you here." Ryuugu said, without turning her head, looking straightly into his eyes.
Keiichi only nodded abruptly in response, powerless to say anything, simply trying to gather his thoughts. He looked away so Rena wouldn’t see his bright red face.
After some time he finally responded. "Maybe you were right, this place is more special than it initially looked like."
Rena's broad smile was enough answer for him.
